!OBITUARY
FORMER JUDGE OF COUNTY COURT PASSES AWAY

William Tyler Keathley was born near Annapolis August 3, 1870, and died June 18, 1953, aged 82 years, 10 months and 15 days.

He was united in marriage to Martha Evaline Lewis on February 19, 1892, and to this union thirteen children were born. His wife and 11 children survive his. The living children are:

Della Tesreau, St. Louis; Walker Keathely, Ironton, Lucille Fanali, Point Arena, California; Nettie Helms, Hamburg, Michigan; Levter Keathley, St. Louis; Charles E. of San Gabriel, California; Clarence of Jefferson City; Herschel of Anchorage, Alaska; Myrene Wallace of Ironton; Lorene Keathely of Ironton; Marshall Keathley of Midland, Texas.

He also leaves 27 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren to honor his memory.

At an early age he became a member of the Christian Church at Brunot. Later he united with the First Baptist Church here at Ironton.

During his entire life he practiced Christian principles in his home and in his community. For this reason, it is not necessary to eulogize his at this time. His life was a testimony of Micah's writing: “He has showed you, oh man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice and love kindness and to walk humbly with your God.”

Mr.Keathley served his county as Judge of the County Court from the Southern District and was always a man of high principle and anxious to serve to the best of his ability.

Services were from the White and Sons Chapel Saturday afternoon and burial was at the Arcadia Valley Memorial Park. Rev. Nelson was in charge of the funeral and Whites the funeral arrangements.

Thursday, June 9, 1955...We are sorry to hear of the death of Mrs. Tyler Keathley who had been ill for some time. She was a sister to James Lewis and the late Jerome Lewis.

Martha's parents were William Lewis and Abagail Johnson. She was married to William Tyler Keathley. The informant was Walker Keathley of Ironton, Missouri. Martha (Lewis) Keathley was buried on June 8, 1955 in the Arcadia Valley Memorial Park Cemetery in Ironton, Missouri.

Martha Evaline Keathley (nee Lewis) was born near Annapolis, Missouri, November 25, 1874, and died June 5, 1955, aged 80 years, 6 months and 11 days.

She was united in Marriage to William Tyler Keathley on Feb. 19, 1892. He preceded her in death on June 18, 1953. To this union was born thirteen children. Eleven children survive. The children living are: Della Tesreau, St. Louis, Missouri; Walker Keathley, Ironton, Missouri; Lucille Fanali, Point Arena, Calif.; Nettie Helms, Hamburg, Michigan; Lester Keathley, Ironton, Missouri; Charles E. Keathley, San Gabriel, California; Clarence Keathley, Jefferson City, Missouri; Herschel Keathley, Anchorage, Alaska; Myrene Wallace, Bismarck, Missouri; Lorene Keathley, Ironton, Missouri; Marshall Keathley, Midland, Texas.

She also leaves twenty eight grandchildren and twenty five great grandchildren to honor her memory.

At the age of sixteen she was converted at a cottage prayer service in the house of Lee Jackson and baptized in Big Creek, near Annapolis, Missouri. For many years she has been a member of the First Baptist Church, here in Ironton.

During her entire life, she practiced Christian principals in her house and in her community. Her life was a testimony to the Writings in the Proverbs:

“She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat of the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her.”

Therefore, with the poet we can say:

In the death of Uncle Billy Lewis, his wife has lost a kind and amiable husband his children an affectionate father, and the community in which he lived a noble and worthy citizen and neighbor He had been an invalid for about fourteen or fifteen years before he died being the result of a fall from a horse. Although an invalid,he was cheerful and entertaining in his conversation, energetic in business, and a good manager. He never belonged to any church, but before he died he told the writer that he believed that he had made peace with his God and is now asleep in Jesus awaiting the resurrection morning to receive a crown of life. I want to say to the bereaved family, 'Weep not as those that have no hope, for blessed are they that die trusting in the Lord.'

Abigail came to Iron Co. when her brother Campbell migrated
there circa 1855.

Hi! I just received your email. I am almost certain that your great
grandmother Abigail Johnson is the sister of my great grandfather Campbell
Johnson. My great grandfather Campbell Johnson was born March
1834 in floyd county Kentucky. He had a older sister Elizabeth Johnson born
in Virginia and a older brother born in Virginia. Elizabeth married William
Riley Mead aug. 08, 1841 in Floyd County, Kentucky. Elizabeth and her
husband and children John & his wife mary and my great grandfather Campbell
came to Reynolds County, Mo about 1855. On June 29, 1860 Campbell
married Charlotte Hannah in Iron County.
I have reason to beleive that Ruth Trout and Edward Johnson are
the parents of my great grandfather. I had contact with a man from Illinois
and in his notes Christian Trout & Mary elizabeth Gearhart are the parents
of Ruth Trout. and in these notes was my Aunt Elizabeth Johnson and her
husband William Riley Mead and their daughter Rossanah Mead that
married James K. Polk Randolph, he also listed Ruth Trouts brothers and sisters
and their spouses. and their children but they didn't know who Ruth &
Edwards children were. I contacted Cathy Hamilton from floyd county Kentucky
for a 1850 look up on a Ruth or edward Johnson and she found Ruth Johnson the
1850 Floyd County Census with her children.

So I am almost certain I have found great grandfather Campbell's parents
plus his siblings.

My grandfather was named Edward Jackson Johnson. Let me know
what you think or if you find anything. My great grandfather died in Reynolds
county, Mo and is buried in Iron County, mo in the rutter Cemetery.

I also had read that Abigail Johnson was from Pike Co. and had
found the seven-year-old daughter of Bailey and Rebecca Johnson
on the 1850 Pike County census. Since she is still there on the 1860
census (ours was in Iron Co. and married in 1860) AND since this Abigail
married Jefferson Johnson, I was confused. Then I read a GenForum
entry about a Campbell Johnson who came to Iron Co. around 1855 from KY
and my interest was piqued since our Abigail was from KY and
married in 1857.
I then found the Johnsons on the 1850 Floyd Co., KY census.

Edward had died between 1843 (last land entry) and 1847
(Ruth Johnson mentioned alone in father's will--other children mentioned
with spouse). I don't know if Ruth came with Campbell and
Abigail to Iron Co. or not. Campbell married in Iron Co. in 1860 and
Abigail in 1857. Mud Creek, where Edward owned land, is just inside the
Floyd Co. line.
The Johnsons had dealings in Pike Co. since Ruth's parents lived in
Pike Co. and John (Edward and Ruth's oldest son) married in Pike Co.

Migrated to Missouri between 1852 and 1857. Son John married in TN about 1854, next son William married in Iron County MO 30 Oct 1857.


NOTES

George Lewis and wife settled at the mouth of Carver Creek Northwest of Sabula, Missouri sometime between 1847 and 1850. Of their eleven children all but one was born in Tennessee but where is uncertain. Areas reported are Knoxville and or Chattanooga. Its reported they could have crossed the Mississippi at St. Genevieve, No. [This information was given by Mr. Billie J. Lewis, a great-grandson of George Lewis. (See above 1850 census record to see George was still in Tennessee)


Geo. Lewis could have a Brother David and one John. They came to Mo. with him. Believe to be the son of Nathan Lewis of Sullivan Co. North Carolina. Settled at Sabula Mo. between 1847 & 1850. of their eleven children all but one was born in Tenn. [Copy by Loren Ruble ...May 1, 1979 (See 1850 census record to see George was still in Tennessee)

We, Elizabeth Lewis and Robert Lewis as principal, and John Lewis, John Lain and William Pinkley as securities, are held and firmly bound to State of Missouri in the sum of Six thousand dollars, for the payment of which we bind ourselves, our heirs, executors, and administrators.

The condition of the above bond is, that if Elizabeth Lewis & Robert Lewis Administrator of the estate of George Lewis deceased, shall faithfully administer said estate, account for, pay and deliver all money and property of said estate, and perform all other things touching said administration, required by law, or the order or decree of any Court having jurisdiction, then the labor bond to be void, otherwise to remain in full force.

ALLIED LEWIS FAMILIES
; ; The Lewis families of Madison, Iron, and Reynolds Counties are a prolific clan, which I could not cover in a whole book, let alone a few pages, but I do have some points I would like to make. ; In 1850 Madison County census, there were 5 families, three of which lived next door to each other that I feel must have been related as mentioned previously. ; The other two I'm not certain of were Furney Lewis, born N.C., age 31, who had married Nancy Perringer in 1838, Madison County and had four children, John, 10, Amanda 7, Leonard 6, and Martha 1 in the 1850 census. ; The other was John Lewis, 41 from S.C., wife Caroline 20, Laura 2, and John L. 5 mo. ; I make this point because each had a son John that will later be important. ; The two families that were: ; #496-Jacob Lewis-45-born N.C., Sarah 17 TN, Bidda 15, TN, Martha E. 13, Eli, 11, John Y., 9, & Catherine 7, all born TN, Hugh P. 5, Polly Ann 4, James Millow, 2, and Emiline 3 mo. ; There was also Eliza J. 10, born TN, who belonged to Jacob but w
In 1860 Iron County census I found: ; the John Lewis from SC, who married Caroline, Robert Lewis, the son of Georg who had been in Arkansas, next door to him was John and Emiline Lewis, and next to them was Benjamin Lewis, son of George also. ; ; Close bywas John Lewis, Jr. (son of George) and wife Nancy, and closer to Annapolis was William Lewis (son of George also) and finally Elizabeth Lewis, widow of George. ; I did not find David Lewis (who had been in 1850 Madison County census) nor his family again, but early land plats show David Lewis and Oliver Lewis (his son) owning land right near John, George and all the other Lewises.
Other Lewis researchers in Missouri have mistakingly assumed that John (who married Emiline Dunn) was the son of George, even though they found the two John's listed on the same census. ; I am referring here to the one listed as John Jr. who was 26 in the1860 census, wife Nancy, 25, Delia, 8, George, 6, James, 4, and Benjamin, 8 mo. Who was the real son of George, and was in Marion County TN in 1850. ; Although there was a definite relationship between George and John (who married Emiline), they were notfather and son, but brothers. ; I will concentrate now on George's son Robert, who has family connections with mine, but will first list all of George's children and who they married.
1. Mary, married James Hale and stayed in TN.
2. Catherine, married Robinson Griffith and stayed in Arkansas.
3. Robert, married Mary 'Polly' Griffith, and was in Arkansas before coming to Missouri.
4. Benjamin, married Oma Hewitt (He was in MO in 1850).
5. John (listed as Jr.), married Nancy ___?____.
6. William, married Abigail Johnson.
7. Martha 'Patty', married James Casteel.
8. Elizabeth married Thomas Jackson.
9. Andrew, married Angeline Rose.
10. James married Lucinda Wallis.
11. Hepsi, married William Ruble.

Elizabeth (age 47) and all the Lewis children were born in Tennessee. John (age 21) and William (16) were also farmers. The other children were: Martha (13), George (11), Elizabeth (9), Andrew (6) and James (4).


In 1850 a Samuel P. Griffith age 25 and wife is next door to George Lewis, page 387, on page 385 is Robert and Catherine Griffith, with other Griffith famiies close by. father of Robinson Griffith that married Catherine Lewis

1840 census ...Eastern District, Marion County, Tennessee ...George Lewis was the head of the family. There were 3 members of the household employed in agriculture. There were 2 persons over 20 years of age who could not read or write. The following number of free white sales were in the household: 30 to 40 years of age1; 10 to 15 years of age2; 5 to 10 years of age1 and under 5 years of age2. Also in the household were the following number of free white females: 30 to 40 years of age1; 15 to 20 years of age1 and under 5 years of age2.

1850 census ...Second District, Marion County, Tennessee ...George Lewis (age 48) was born in North Carolina. He was a farmer with real estate valued at $600. Elizabeth (age 47) and all the Lewis children were born in Tennessee. John (age 21) and William (16) were also farmers. The other children were: Martha (13), George (11), Elizabeth (9), Andrew (6) and James (4).

!NOTES

George Lewis and wife settled at the mouth of Carver Creek Northwest of Sabula, Missouri sometime between 1847 and 1850. Of their eleven children all but one was born in Tennessee but where is uncertain. Areas reported are Knoxville and or Chattanooga. Its reported they could have crossed the Mississippi at St. Genevieve, No. [This information was given by Mr. Billie J. Lewis, a great-grand son of George Lewis, of 2521 Meadow Lane; Cape Girardeau, Mo. 63701] (See above 1850 census record to see George wasstill in Tennessee)

Geo. Lewis could have a Brother David and one John. They came to Mo. with him. Believe to be the son of Nathan Lewis of Sullivan Co. North Carolina. belief the names of the heirs of the said George Lewis deceased and their
places of residence are respectfully as follows;Mary entermarried with James

Griffith who resides in the state of Arkansas Robert Lewis, Benjamin Lewis,

ALLIED LEWIS FAMILIES

The Lewis families of Madison, Iron, and Reynolds Counties are a prolific clan, which I could not cover
in a whole book, let alone a few pages, but I do have some points I would like to make.
In 1850 Madison County census, there were 5 families, three of which lived next door to each other that I feel
must have been related as mentioned previously. The other two I'm not certain of were Furney Lewis, born N.C.,
age 31, who had married Nancy Perringer in 1838, Madison County and had four children, John, 10, Amanda 7, Leonard 6,
and Martha 1 in the 1850 census. The other was John Lewis, 41 from S.C., wife Caroline 20, Laura 2, and John L. 5 mo.
I make this point because each had a son John that will later be important. The two families that were: #496-Jacob
Lewis-45-born N.C., Sarah 17 TN, Bidda 15, TN, Martha E. 13, Eli, 11, John Y., 9, & Catherine 7, all born TN, Hugh P. 5,
Polly Ann 4, James Millow, 2, and Emiline 3 mo. There was also Eliza J. 10, born TN, who belonged to Jacob but was in
John and Emiline's house; they had only been married in 1842, so couldn't have had a 10 year old child.
John & Emiline were #497, his age 30, born TN, she was 25, SC, with three sons: Eli, 6, MO, Levi 4, TN, and Libe 2, MO
(This should have been Robert, Leroy, and Eli.) #498-David Lewis, 35, NC, Nancy 35, KY, Oliver 10, TN, George 8, Alabama,
, Becky Ann, 6, MO, Mary 4, and J.B. & P.R. 5 mo. Old twins, all MO. George Lewis, who I think was also a brother,
was in Marion Co. TN (which was where John was from also) in 1850. His family: George Lewis , 48, Elizabeth, 47, John,
21, William, 16, Martha, 13, George, 11, Elizabeth, 9, Andrew, 6, and James, 4. There was also a son, Robert,
married and in Arkansas, two doughters, Mary and Catherine, both married, and 24 year old Ben, who was stayong with
Elihu Dunn and his wife Maria, in Madison Co., MO.
Toward the latter part of the 1850's, George and Elizabeth came to Missouri,
and settled at the mouth of Carver Creek, and one more child was born in Missouri.
George bought land from John and Emiline, and he died before 1860.

In 1860 Iron County census I found: the John Lewis from SC, who married Caroline, Robert Lewis, the son of Georg
who hac been in Arkansas, next door to him was John and Emiline Lewis, and next to them was Benjamin Lewis, son of
George also. Close by was John Lewis, Jr. (son of George) and wife Nancy, and closer to Annapolis was William Lewis
(son of George also) and finally Elizabeth Lewis, widow of George. I did not find David Lewis (who had been in 1850
Madison County census) nor his family again, but early land plats show David Lewis and Oliver Lewis (his son) owning
land right near John, George and all the other Lewises.

Other Lewis researchers in Missouri have mistakingly assumed that John (who married Emiline Dunn) was the son of George,
even though they found the two John's listed on the same census. I am referring here to the one listed as John Jr. who
was 26 in the 1660 census, wife Nancy, 25, Delia, 8, George, 6, James, 4, and Benjamin, 8 mo. Who was the real son of
George, and was in Marion County TN in 1850. Although there was a definite relationship between George and John
(who married Emiline), they were not father and son, but brothers. I will concentrate now on George's son Robert,
who has family connections with mine, but will first list all of George's children and who they married.

1. Mary, married James Hale and stayed in TN.
2. Catherine, married Robinson Griffith and stayed in Arkansas.
3. Robert, married Mary 'Polly' Griffith, and was in Arkansas before coming to Missouri.
4. Benjamin, married Oma Hewitt (He was in MO in 1850).
5. John (listed as Jr.), married Nancy ___?____.
6. William, married Abigail Johnson.
7. Martha 'Patty', married James Casteel.
8. Elizabeth married Thomas Jackson.
9. Andrew, married Angeline Rose.
10. James married Lucinda Wallis.
11. Hepsi, married William Ruble.

Hi! I just received your email. I am almost certain that your great
grandmother Abigail Johnson is the sister of my great grandfather Campbell
Johnson. My great grandfather Campbell Johnson was born March 1834 in floyd
county Kentucky. He had a older sister Elizabeth Johnson born in Virginia
and a older brother born in Virginia. Elizabeth married William Riley Mead
aug. 08, 1841 in Floyd County, Kentucky. Elizabeth and her husband and
children John & his wife mary and my great grandfather Campbell came to
Reynolds County, Mo about 1855. On June 29, 1860 Campbell married Charlotte
Hannah in Iron County.
I have reason to beleive that Ruth Trout and Edward Johnson are the parents
of my great grandfather. I had contact with a man from Illinois and in his
notes Christian Trout & Mary elizabeth Gearhart are the parents of Ruth
Trout. and in these notes was my Aunt Elizabeth Johnson and her husband
William Riley Mead and their daughter Rossanah Mead that married James K.
Polk Randolph, he also listed Ruth Trouts brothers and sisters and their
spouses. and their children but they didn't know who Ruth & Edwards children
were. I contacted Cathy Hamilton from floyd county Kentucky for a 1850 look
up on a Ruth or edward Johnson and she found Ruth Johnson the 1850 Floyd
County Census with her children.

So I am almost certain I have found great grandfather Campbell's parents

My grandfather was named Edward Jackson Johnson. Let me know what you think

and is buried in Iron County, mo in the rutter Cemetery.
