21 | "The History of Bedminster, Bucks County, Pennsylvania" states: “In the early I700 ’s there was a migration of Scotch-Irish from Northern Ireland This was due not from famine, but as a result of the Trade and Navigation Act passed by Parliamennt in I696. This Act classified Northern Ireland as if it were one of the colonies, as far as taxation was concerned. Many people faced complete financial ruin. The end result was a migration into the colonies. They preferred the wilderness to the cities. Not so much for the privacy, but to get away from the sight and sound of the British and British law which they felt had betrayed them. They journeyed out into the wilderness and finding land they liked which was unoccupied they squatted. They felt that God did not like idle land and if the Proprietors were not doing anything with the land why, then they would. And so they becamme squatters. They moved in, then had to be removed when the land was legally sold. This was one of William Allen's (a land proprietor) big problems...as land was sold to speculators, squatters who had the means could get a mortgage and buy theieir plot if they wished. We know that Isaac Norris used a plan whereby a man could pay a sum each year for twenty years. Then on the twenty first year the land became his, and he received a deed It is not known if William Allen used this plan, but we do know he had some sort of contractual arrangement with those buying his land " (Early Families, page 5, History of Bedminster, Bucks County, PA, fourth printing, September 1999, by Bedminster Historical Society, Pauline Cassel, 1976) “Active in the Deep Run Presbyterian Church in early time was ROBERT McNEELY. He settled on I53 acres of land north of church site. His brother JOHN (Jonathan in some records) McNEELY settled above him on I90 acres of land...both brothers are oon Allen land. They probably settled here AFTER 1741. There may have been a purchase agreement sat up with William Allen, but it never came into fruition. Allen ’s Estate sold...in 1801... And so, sixty years of hard work and heavy taxation went down the drain. The tax list of I782 and I783 show both McNeely’s are on the Allen Estate. The end of the revolution proprietary land was now commonwealth land There would be patents and warrants issued into the mid eighteen hundreds in this aarea. As for the land that had been William Allen ’s the American government had confiscated it. A court battle ensued to regain the land by his estate, headed by Ann Penn Greenleaf Granddaughter of William Allen. 23 | Cocke County, Tennessee Early Settlers of the Old 12th District ----------------------------------------------------------------------- The following is a list of early settlers who lived on the waters off Cosby and Groundhog creeks, creeks that are mostly in what was the old 12th district of Cocke County. This list comes from land entries on Tennessee State Library and Archives (TSLA) microfilm #36. The label on the copy of the film I have says the and entries are on the second item on the film; they are on the third item. It also gives dates of April 1874 to June 1898. These may be the years that the original book was copied or families brought the originals to be re-recorded. The actual dates of the land entries are 1824 to about 1831, making them some of the earliest surviving records of Cocke County. The original land entries were surveys and included drawings as well as descriptions. The drawings were not copied into the new book. The verbal descriptions often included reference to neighbors. And there were always two names at the left bottom of the description. I believe these were witnesses or attestors. I think they were also neighbors. I have abstracted the page numbers, landowners? names, dates they made the entries, any reference to neighbors, and the attestors names. Most of the landowners lived on the waters of Cosby Creek; I specifically mention those that lived on Groundhog Creek. *Submitted by: Bruce Price ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Name* *Page #* *Entry Date* *Comments* Isaac Burlison 37 04/08/1824 Holloway Giles, Green's line Holloway Giles Wm. 28 | William Thomas Stevenson was the eldest of twelve known (plus two un-named, died young?) children of John Wesley (went by Wesley) Stevenson (1842-1910) and Ellen Sophronia Shaver (1848-1932), who married 08 May 1864 near Patterson, Wayne County, Missouri. William first married to Molly (born as Margaret? or Mabel?) Chilton (1868-1902) on 05 Jul 1885 at Iron County, Missouri. William and Molly were the parents of five known children, namely: 1. Lester May Stevenson (1886-1898) 2. Eva Stevenson Walcott (1891-1966) 3. Ethyl Stevenson Parker (1894-1967) 4. Lena Stevenson King (1896-1988) 5. Lela I. Stevenson Semands (1899-1969) After Molly died, William remarried to Rhoda Permelia King (1883-1959) on 12 Apr 1904 at Des Arc, Iron County, Missouri. William and Rhoda were the parents of two known children, namely: 6. Woodrow Harold Stevenson (1913-1942) 7. Wilson Howard Stevenson (1916-2006) In the book "History of Southeast Missouri" (published c1912) on pages 879 881 the following write up appeared: WILLIAM T. STEVENSON. An able exponent of the progressive spirit and strong initiative ability that have caused Iron county to forge so rapidly forward commercially and in other lines is William T. Stevenson, who has done much for the material and civic development and upbuilding of the attractive town in which he has elected to establish his home. Mr. Stevenson is a man of great and diverse activity. He is engaged in the general merchandise business at Des Arc; he is a member of the firm of William Stevenson & Brothers, who conduct a general store at Scatterville, Wayne county; he owns the Des Arc Telephone Company, and in fact is one of the most prominent telephone men in this part of the state; he is vice president of the Bank of Des Arc and former president of this sound monetary institution; and he has given excellent service in public office. It is by no means to be gainsaid that he is one of the big men of Iron county. He built the Des Arc telephone system and he has Bell and other long distanc Mr. Stevenson was born upon the farm where he now makes his residence on January 21, 1865, and is the son of J. W. and Ellen (Shaver) Stevenson, the later of whom is living at Des Arc at the age of sixty four years. She was born and reared in Madison County, Missouri, her parents having been pioneers to Missouri in the earlier part of the nineteenth century, and who took a part in the life of the country in an agricultural capacity. The father was born in Iron County; was reared near the site of Des Arc; was a farmer, and served in the Civil war. More is told of him in succeeding paragraphs. He and his wife became the parents of a round dozen of children, ten of whom were sons and two daughters, and of this number but one is deceased, the eldest, Per;oe, who married Napolean Lewis and died a year later, in 1898. The subject is the eldest of those living; David F., of Taskee, Missouri, is engaged in merchandising and farming; John H. resides at Des Arc and is interested in merchandising and real estate Mr. Stevenson received his general education in the district schools and remained home until the attainment of his majority. His first experience as a wage earner was as a book keeper in a sawmill. As early as 1886 he realized his ambitions of placing himself upon an independent footing and started in business for himself. He subsequently formed a partnership with his brother, John H., and these two gentlemen still retain some associate interests. In 1905 Charles C. Stevenson entered into partnership with his brother and at the present time he manages jointly with the subject the mill, the store at Des Arc and a farm south of town. The other interests of the subjects are individual. Mr. Stevenson was first married to Miss Mollie Chilton, who died August 29, 1902, the mother of four daughters, Eva, Ethel, Lena, and Lela, all of whom are at home. The subject was married in the year 1904 to Miss Rhoda King, daughter of the late Samuel King. This honored and venerable citizen died in May, 1911, when nearly eighty years of age. Politically, William T. Stevenson is a stanch and stalwart Democrat, as are all his brothers. In speaking of his public service mention should be made of his four years of office as deputy with Sheriff M.T. O'NEAL. He is a member of the Modern Woodmen of America of Des Arc and he and his family favor the Baptist church. The J. Wesley Stevenson, father of the subject, was summoned to the Great Beyond on January 20, 1910, at his home near Des Arc, the very farm upon which he was born November 13, 1832. He is a son of Henderson C. and Angeline (McFadden) Stevenson, who came to Missouri from Kentucky and Virginia, respectively. Angeline McFadden's parents were Samuel and Lucy McFadden, early pioneers of this section of Missouri. The family all were farmers and none of the name of McFadden now reside in this section. J. Wesley Stevenosn, himself the father of twelve children, was one of a family of ten, and of that number only three survive at the present time, namely: Mrs. Lucinda Shaver, of near Des Arc; Mrs. Annie Lloyd, of near Des Arc; and James A., of Iron county. Mr. Stevenson was one of those who paid the county the compliment of remaining within its favored boundaries throughout the entire course of his life. He was a farmer and stockman, in particular raising great numbers of horses and furnishing teams for the lumber business. He was Democrat in his political conviction, ever giving heart and mind to the party's causes. Mr. Stevenson was married May 8, 1864, to Miss Ellen Shaver, born in 1848, in Madison County, Missouri, on the Saint Francois River. This worthy lady is now residing at Des Arc. She is a daughter of David W. and Mary (Ramsey) Shaver, they having been married in Illinois. The mother died when Ellen was an infant in about 1850 and the father survived for more than a score of years, his demise taking place in 1872. He was latterly in the mercantile business at Des Arc, and when the railway was built through which brought the town into being he sold the lots upon which the town was built. Mrs. Ellen Stevenson was one of a family of four children, and of these, besides herself, one brother, John Shaver, is living at Des Arc. J. Wesley Stevenson was a soldier in the civil war, serving in Company H, Forty Seventh Missouri Regiment. The military part of this organization for the most part was in the state, but toward the close of the war he was in the United States service in Tennessee. Altogether, he wore th | Stevenson, William Thomas (8919521)

67 | from Vicki Parrin: William Fredrick Kaempfer was born October 12 , 1883 in Cape Girardeau , Cape Girardeau Co., MO . He married twice : first to Myrtle Jarvis , May 12 , 1912 , in a Methodist Church , Murphysboro , Jackson Co., IL ; second to Millie Ann Davis , March 31 , 1923 , in the Courthouse ( ? ) , Jackson , Cape Girardeau Co., MO . Myrtle died in childbirth when her only child , Harry William Kaempfer was about three or four , around 1919 and was buried in the Old Lorimer Cemetery , Cape Girardeau , MO . Millie died during WWII , not sure of the exact date or where she died and was buried . I'm sure it was in or around Cape . William " Liz " died in July 1975 in Cape and was buried in the Old Lorimer Cemetery . He had one son by his first wife and five children by his second wife , there were two sets of twins , but only one , a son Gerald survived . 80 | Jonathan (John) McNeely is immigrant John, brother of Robert and Adam. They migrated from Northern Ireland to Bucks County, Pennsylvania around 1740. There is an association with the Lancaster County, Pennsylvania McNeely’s, David is part of this association. Adam, Jonathan (John), Robert and David are the progenitors of the Rowan, lredell and Mecklenburg North Carolina McNeely’s. John McNeely son of Jonathan (John) married Elinor Hart. This marriage is supported by Hart family location and association and is further supported by the fact that John had daughter named Elinor and a son named Samuel, Samuel Hart was Elinor’s father. The dates of land ownership assist us in determining migration groups. It appears that Adam’s family migrated with him in what we have termed the first increment, we do not know the dates of birth of his children; we know Adam Sr. died in 1766. Jonathan (John I) migrated same increment. His family is with him except John Junior, Archibald and Margaret. They had married by this time and remained in PA for a short period. The time line shows Archibald and John signing petition in Bucks County, PA in 1763 with Archibald having a child baptized at Tinicum Presbyterian Church, PA in 1770. Hence it is doubtful either of them came with first increment. We believe John Jr., Archibald, James and Margaret (McNeely) Hughes (four siblings), Elinor’s sisters families and possibly her nephew Samuel migrated prior to the Revolutionary war, probably around 1772. They are not listed on the 1775 associate list of Bedminster Township, Bucks County, PA. An interesting tidbit of Hart family lore, some of the children went south for the purpose of horse breeding. They have found no support for this lore but later some of John McNeely’s family is involved in horse-trading in North Carolina and South Missouri. By process of elimination and examination of available documents it appears that Jonathan (John) McNeely of Bucks County, PA is Ireland immigrant John who migrated to North Carolina around 1760. It also supports him as being the John who appears as landowner in 1765 in Rowan County, North Carolina along with Adam McNeely landowner same year. The family association in Rowan County provides reasonable support for him to be the father of the siblings mentioned in Isaac’s will, John, Archibald, Isaac, James and Margaret. Our McNeelys were in Cape Girardeau County by the 1830s. It is a challenge tracing the McNeelys. The continue to use the same names over and over. For instance, there are 3 generations named John. | McNeely, Jonathan (John) I (Sr.) (42078976)
