Cocke County, Tennessee
Early Settlers of the Old 12th District

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

The following is a list of early settlers who lived on the waters
off Cosby and Groundhog Creeks, creeks that are mostly in what was
the old 12th district of Cocke County. This list comes from land
entries on Tennessee State Library and Archives (TSLA) microfilm
#36. The label on the copy of the film I have says the land entries
are on the second item on the film; they are on the third item. It
also gives dates of April 1874 to June 1898. These may be the years
that the original book was copied or families brought the originals
to be re-recorded. The actual dates of the land entries are 1824 to
about 1831, making them some of the earliest surviving records of
Cocke County.

The original land entries were surveys and included drawings as well
as descriptions. The drawings were not copied into the new book. The
verbal descriptions often included reference to neighbors. And there
were always two names at the left bottom of the description. I
believe these were witnesses or attestors. I think they were also
neighbors.

I have abstracted the page numbers, landowners? names, dates they
made the entries, any reference to neighbors, and the attestors
names. Most of the landowners lived ?on the waters? of Cosby Creek;
I specifically mention those that lived on Groundhog Creek.

43 Best Answer: Probaly [ILL-sah-bine].

According to "Das große Orbis Vornamenbuch", 'Ilsabe' and 'Ilsabeth' are both short forms of Elisabeth. "Ilsabein" is probably such an archaic short form or pet form of Elisabeth too. Some even say this short form of Elisabeth was unique to the Jöllenbeck district of Bielefeld. But I find the name also in other districts of Bielefeld, and in Wüsten (Bad Salzuflen) in North Rhine-Westphalia. Probably a very common given name all over North-Western Germany until the beginning of the 19th century.

It's the German equivalent of Isbel (rare), Isabel, Libby, Lisa, Liza or Leesa in English.

44 Email from Kelly Himmel 4 Sep 2018:

I decided to try to work back from a person I believe to be the brother of Thomas Haile,
Leeman Haile (1802-1877-dates are on several websites without
references.). My evidence for this is purely based on circumstantial
evidence. Leeman married Marillis Edwards in Rutherford County, TN in
1832 and Thomas Haile named his first son Leeman and a daughter
Marillus. I found out that shortly afterward Leeman and Marillis
moved to Yalobusha County, MS. Leeman purchased several tracts of
land in Yalobusha and Grenada Cos. and became a merchant. Very
interestingly, he enlisted in the Union Army in the Civil War, despite
being old enough to avoid fighting for either side and living in place
where pro-Confederate sentiment was overwhelming.

There are a number of Haile burials in the Coffeyville (MS) City
Cemetery and the following two are of the most interest to me
Marillis Edwards Haile Died on August 20, 1836. The inscription is
Wife of Leeman Haile; Daughter of James and Nancy Edwards.
James Dudley Haile January 14, 1834-April 28, 1903 I assume to be
the son of Leeman and Marillis.

In the Stevens Cemetery in Yalobusha County there is another Haile
burial of interest:
Joseph Haile May 6, 1797-January 10, 1872. The inscription gives
his birthplace as Micklinburg (Mecklenburg) Co., Virginia . I believe
that Joseph might be a brother to Thomas and Leeman.

Mitchell Fleming honored; soldier in Revolutionary War…

By: TOM NEUMEYER

Mrs. Gale Seabaugh’s great, great, great, great, grandfather, Mitchell Flaming, came briefly into the limelight last Friday as his final resting place was marked by the Daughters of the American Revolution with a bronze plaque honoring him as a soldier inthe Revolutionary War. Because few of its veterans came this far west, such a plaque is relatively unique in this area.
The grave is near New Wells on the old Fleming farm, which is now owned by Marvin Richter. Mrs. Seabaugh, who is Secretary at the Presbyterian Church 1n Jackson, provided the information on her ancestor for this article, with a assistance from her grandfather, H. R. Stevenson of Fruitland.
Mitchell Fleming was born in April, 1761, in Kent County, Del. In a few years, the Fleming family pulled up stakes and moved south to Rowan County, N.C. near the Coddle Creek Church. He grew up fast in the wilderness that was short on comforts and long on hardships. In 1777 he enlisted in Captain Craig’s Company, of Col. Francis Locke's Regiment at the age of 16. The Company was involved in one skirmish at Coney Island on the Savannah River. In 1782 Fleming became a private in Captain James Stevenson's Company of Col. Isaac's North Carolina Regiment. The pay receipts from the period of his service are listed in North Carolina records.
With the war’s finale, he married Miss Agnes Kennedy June 27, 1784, in Rowan County N.C. The new family established a farm in Meckinburg (now Cabarrus) County with land he inherited from his father, George Fleming. In 1819 the family joined a group of colonists and left North Carolina by wagon train to arrive in Cape Girardeau County.
After arriving, Fleming bought some land in Shawnee and Apple Creek Townships at $1.25 an acre. Land patients were issued for his purchases in 1821 and 1823. The land was scoured mostly in 80 acre plots for a total of 840 acres. Practically all of it waslocated among various creek bottoms. As each of his daughters married, he deeded his new son in law an eighty acre tract, which later was willed to the daughter.
On September 21, 1821, Fleming's wife died. Agnes was born in Chester Co., Pennsylvania July 20, 1760, and bore all of Fleming's children. In 1824 he took a second wife, Miss Jane Stevenson, who was a sister to his son in law, James Stevenson. Jane andJames were children of Fleming's commander, Capt. James Stevenson. James married Fleming's eldest daughter, Jane.
Besides some confusion in names this caused some confusion in relationships. Jane Stevenson Fleming’s brother, James became her son in law after her marriage.
Mitchell Fleming began receiving a pension for his tour of duty in the war in 1832 when Congress passed a general pension act. His application was executed December 22, 1832 in Cape Girardeau County.
The Mitchell Fleming family was charter members of Apple Creek Presbyterian Church. He had the position of first ruling elder till a year before his death. Fleming must have been a deeply religious man, for when finds were being raised to pay for the new church, be pledged his entire pension from the war until the building was paid for. Mitchell Fleming passed away April 18, 1837, at the age of 76, after leading quite a full life. His wife, Jane, followed him in death four days later. The Fleming family plot contains the graves of Mitchell Fleming, his two wives, his daughter Margaret, and a son, Hiram, and his two wives and a daughter. The plot was situated on a hill in the Fleming farm that now belongs to Marvin Richter. Fleming's tombstone is decorated with thirteen stars around the base of the ball on the top.
Fleming's nine children, all by his first wife, Agnes, were as follows:
• Jane. She was born January 11, 1786, married James Stevenson in N. C., and died April 16, 1865, and was buried in Apple Creek Cemetery.
• William married Ginny Woodside in N. C. in 1808 and remained in that state.
• Richard married Jean Waddington in N. C. in 1814 and also remained there.
• Margaret was born February 17, 1791, died August 15, 1822, having not married, and was buried in the family cemetery.
• Mary was born August 26, 1794, married Benjamin Brown in 1824, died March 20, 1864, and was buried in the Apple Creek Cemetery.
• Agnes was born December 23, 1795, married Robert S. McFarland December 20, 1821, went to Bond County, Ill. in 1837, died May 12,1865 and was buried in Bethel Cemetery, Bond County.
• Elizabeth married James B. Little in 1824 and it is thought they moved to Texas.
• Sarah was born January 18, 1802, married Zenas N. Ross, died September 27, 1879, and was buried in the Apple Creek Cemetery.
• Hiram was born August 17, 1804, was a merchant who had one of the first stores is Jackson, married to Jane Stevenson, January 1837, who died that December, and then married Margaret Stevenson by whom he had one daughter, Martha Jane, born in 1842 and died 1846. The whole family is buried in the Fleming Cemetery.

Rob,

Hi! I just received your email. I am almost certain that your great
grandmother Abigail Johnson is the sister of my great grandfather Campbell
Johnson. My great grandfather Campbell Johnson was born March 1834 in floyd
county Kentucky. He had a older sister Elizabeth Johnson born in Virginia
and a older brother born in Virginia. Elizabeth married William Riley Mead
aug. 08, 1841 in Floyd County, Kentucky. Elizabeth and her husband and
children John & his wife mary and my great grandfather Campbell came to
Reynolds County, Mo about 1855. On June 29, 1860 Campbell married Charlotte
Hannah in Iron County.
I have reason to beleive that Ruth Trout and Edward Johnson are the parents
of my great grandfather. I had contact with a man from Illinois and in his
notes Christian Trout & Mary elizabeth Gearhart are the parents of Ruth
Trout. and in these notes was my Aunt Elizabeth Johnson and her husband
William Riley Mead and their daughter Rossanah Mead that married James K.
Polk Randolph, he also listed Ruth Trouts brothers and sisters and their
spouses. and their children but they didn't know who Ruth & Edwards children
were. I contacted Cathy Hamilton from floyd county Kentucky for a 1850 look
up on a Ruth or edward Johnson and she found Ruth Johnson the 1850 Floyd
County Census with her children.

Ruth Johnson 47 VA
Sarah 19Ky
Campbell 16 Ky
Jackson 14
Letta 12 Ky
Abigail 10 Ky
Paralee 8 Ky
William 21 Ky
Mahala 21 Ky

So I am almost certain I have found great grandfather Campbell's parents
plus his siblings.

My grandfather was named Edward Jackson Johnson. Let me know what you think
or if you find anything. My great grandfather died in Reynolds county, Mo
and is buried in Iron County, mo in the rutter Cemetery.
