Robert Gilliland Jr. was the son of Robert Gilliland Sr. Robert Gilliland Jr. married Jean ?1 On May 20, 1786, Robert sold 120 acres on Golden Grove Creek to William Armstrong. This was the tract of land that was originally granted to Robert, Sr. on May 26, 1784 but "delivered to his son." A Jean Gilliland also signed the deed. I'm assuming that Jean was Robert's wife. William Brasher was a witness.1

It appears that Robert moved to Kentucky in the latter part of the 1700's. On September 12, 1798, a land warrant was issued to Lewis Phillips for 150 acres of land on Drakes Creek in Warren County, Kentucky. On May 20, 1799, Lewis assigned this land to Robert Gilliland.2 It was then surveyed for Robert on July 13, 1799.3 On November 14, 1803, a patent was issued to Robert for the 150 acres. On March 18, 1805, Robert sold the 150 acres of land that were surveyed to him in 1799 to Alexander Gilliland for $300. We know this was the same land by its description.4 This is most likely the Alexander Gilliland who on December 19, 1801 sold the 251 acres of land on the east side of Saluda River, Greenville District, South Carolina, to Nathan Waddle, for 100 pounds.5

On July 19, 1802, Robert received a warrant for 250 acres of land. The warrant reads that the land was near Alexander Gilliland's 150 acre survey, assignee of Lewis Phillips.6 Robert signed over the right and title of this land to Alexander Gilliland in April (year not readable).6 Alexander had the land surveyed in January 1807 and patented on June 19, 1809.

The early Federal census records for Kentucky were destroyed, but published tax lists have served as replacements. Robert Gilliland is found on Drakes Creek in Warren County for the years 1801, 1802, 1803, and 1804.7

In the book Warren Co, KY Order Book; Vol 2, June 15, 1801 thru January 1, 1805 are found the following entries:

page 318 - July 15, 1802, ordered that Robert Gilliland be exempt from paying county levy in future. (This was generally done when people were old and unable to work.)

page 328 - July 15, 1802, Robert Gilliland, 250 acres beg. corner of Alexander Gilliland's 150 acres, assignee of Lewis Phillips running S 30 E then so far round the said survey for quantity.

page 434 - July 4, 1803, ordered that Robert Gilliland be fined $2.00 for contempt of this court.

    page 453 - October 3, 1803, Robert Gilliland's line adjoins James Butler's 200 acres.

page 553 - July 2, 1804, Robert Gileland entitled to 50 acres as per entry filed.8

I could find no Gillilands at all in the 1810 Federal Census for Warren County, Kentucky.
