    April 13, 1947

    WILLARD WATSON
Willard Lee Watson, son of William A. Watson and Jetta L. Watson of Flat River, was born January 27, 1921. He attended the Junior College from September, 1939, to December, 1940. Being a member of the National Guard, he was called into active service before completing the first semester of his sophomore year in Junior College. He was first sent to Camp Robinson, Arkansas and later to California. During his training he never lost touch with the Junior College. Through the school paper and correspondence with friends and teachers he kept up with activities around the College. The same thing held true while he was serving as a machine gunner in the infantry during the Aleutian campaign.

Willard wanted to be a flyer. All during the hardships of warfare in the frozen North, he never gave up hope that some day he would become a pilot. He studied and worked constantly toward that end, and at last he got his chance. He was returned to the States for training in the air corps, and his first mission was to visit the Junior College and spread the good news among friends. Soon thereafter he was sent to California to begin his training. As usual he kept up his correspondence with friends around the College, sometimes dropping into the U. S. O. to make a recording instead of writing the conventional letter. During his period of' training, the biggest news he passed along was that on December 11, 1943, he married Wana L. Lewis of Des Arc.

After taking his preliminary flight training in California, Willard was sent to a field at Pecos, Texas, where he was graduated and received his commission as second lieutenant. Shortly thereafter, in the summer of 1944, he returned to the Junior College for a visit, quite proud of his wings and his bride, who accompanied him on the visit.

Not long after his visit here, Willard was sent overseas, and on September 28, 1944, he met death in an aircraft crash near Chartres, France.

    !OBITUARY

Jerome B. Lewis one of our oldest citizens, passed away at his home here on Christmas day, about noon after a lingering illness. He had many friends here and in Iron County. He owned a nice farm near the Roberts community but when he grew older and his boys all left the farm to find employment in the city he moved to town and sold his farm now owned by R. D. Mann. He will be missed by his family and friends.

He leaves his widow and nine children who were all here to attend the funeral except Mrs. Ben Knight of Parkville, Missouri, who came after getting the news about her fathers death but received a telephone message after arriving here that her husband became ill and had entered a hospital. She and her children left at once to return to Parkville to be near him. We are glad to report he is improving.

Mr. Lewis' wife, the former Miss Zella Seal passed away some years ago. She was the mother of his children. In later years he was married to Miss Ailsey Blanton of Ironton. She has been a faithful wife to him and a mother to his children and tenderly nursed him during his illness.

Funeral services were held from the School Gym, Monday afternoon. A large crowd of friends and relatives attended. Rev. West, his former pastor, preached the funeral assisted by Rev. A. L. Gilliam, pastor of the Baptist church and R.I. Stamp offered a prayer.

Mr. Lewis was a good Christian man and a member of the Presbyterian church. The choir was composed of members from all the churches. Mr. and Mrs. Lyman Seal from Flat River sang a special number with Mrs. Hazel Hagerty at the piano.

The McSpadden Funeral Home of Van Buren had charge of the funeral. There were many beautiful floral sprays and wreaths and lovely baskets from his many friends and relatives. Burial was in the family lot here.

Among the relatives attending were Fred Lewis and family from Cape Girardeau, Billy Lewis and family from Flat River, brothers of Mr. Lewis, The Blanton families was from Ironton, The late Tyler Keathley family and their children, Miss Alta Lewis from Kenosha, Wis., Mr. and Mrs. Howard Lewis and family from Alton, Ill., Mr. and Mrs. Ross Nichols and son from Belleview,

Russell Lewis and wife and baby from St. Louis, Pfc. Carter Lewis from his camp in Washington, Mrs. Avis Jones and children from Ironton. One daughter, Mrs. Edgar Lovelace, husband and children had recently sailed for New Zealand and could not be here. Our deepest sympathy is extended to the widow and children.

May the Lord bless and comfort them in their great loss of a loving husband and father. He was our friend. (THE MOUNTAIN ECHO newspaper ...DES ARC HARKENINGS column... Ironton, Iron County, Missouri... Thursday, December 30, 1954)

Goodspeed’s History of Southeast Missouri, published 1888, pg 1108

James Lovelace, mill-owner and farmer, was born in Middle Tennessee, in 1845, and is the son of P.M. and Sarah (Dunegan) Lovelace, who were natives of the same region. They moved west, however, and thinking to better their prospects, located in Wayne County, in 1855, where he followed farming together with the care of a grist-mill at Patterson, that county. He died in 1878, leaving a family of seven children: James, Manuel, Lowry, Vira, Caroline, Lucy, and Dora.

James Lovelace remained at home until maturity, and was given fair educational advantages. He was married in 1875 to Miss Alsie Fenton. A union which has resulted in five children living: Johnnie, Minnie, Nellie, Tommie, and Ora. He was in the Confederate service a short time but soon returned to his previous pursuits. In 1885 he built a saw mill in which he annually produces from his lands about 10,000 feet of pine lumber, for the St. Louis and Kansas markets. Previous to engaging in the saw milling business, he made some money in the contracting, He is also the owner of another saw mill besides the one mentioned, thus having two. Mr. Lovelace owns about 1,550 acres of timber land, and is one of the largest farmers in Iron County, owning five large farms under an excellent state of cultivation. His hill lands have deposits of mixed Iron and lead with some silver, and are said to be well worth development.

    Richard Pingilley:

Abigail came to Iron Co. when her brother Campbell migrated
    there circa 1855.

    From Audra Genna 5/21/00:

Hi! I just received your email. I am almost certain that your great
grandmother Abigail Johnson is the sister of my great grandfather Campbell
Johnson. My great grandfather Campbell Johnson was born March
1834 in floyd county Kentucky. He had a older sister Elizabeth Johnson born
in Virginia and a older brother born in Virginia. Elizabeth married William
Riley Mead aug. 08, 1841 in Floyd County, Kentucky. Elizabeth and her
husband and children John & his wife mary and my great grandfather Campbell
came to Reynolds County, Mo about 1855. On June 29, 1860 Campbell
married Charlotte Hannah in Iron County.
I have reason to beleive that Ruth Trout and Edward Johnson are
the parents of my great grandfather. I had contact with a man from Illinois
and in his notes Christian Trout & Mary elizabeth Gearhart are the parents
of Ruth Trout. and in these notes was my Aunt Elizabeth Johnson and her
husband William Riley Mead and their daughter Rossanah Mead that
married James K. Polk Randolph, he also listed Ruth Trouts brothers and sisters
and their spouses. and their children but they didn't know who Ruth &
Edwards children were. I contacted Cathy Hamilton from floyd county Kentucky
for a 1850 look up on a Ruth or edward Johnson and she found Ruth Johnson the
1850 Floyd County Census with her children.

    Ruth Johnson 47 VA
    Sarah 19Ky
    Campbell 16 Ky
    Jackson 14
    Letta 12 Ky
    Abigail 10 Ky
    Paralee 8 Ky
    William 21 Ky
    Mahala 21 Ky

So I am almost certain I have found great grandfather Campbell's parents
    plus his siblings.

My grandfather was named Edward Jackson Johnson. Let me know
what you think or if you find anything. My great grandfather died in Reynolds
county, Mo and is buried in Iron County, mo in the rutter Cemetery.

    From Rich Pingilly 3/28/00:
I also had read that Abigail Johnson was from Pike Co. and had
found the seven-year-old daughter of Bailey and Rebecca Johnson
on the 1850 Pike County census. Since she is still there on the 1860
census (ours was in Iron Co. and married in 1860) AND since this Abigail
married Jefferson Johnson, I was confused. Then I read a GenForum
entry about a Campbell Johnson who came to Iron Co. around 1855 from KY
and my interest was piqued since our Abigail was from KY and
    married in 1857.
I then found the Johnsons on the 1850 Floyd Co., KY census.

    Ruth Johnson 47 VA
    Sarah 19 KY
    Campbell 16 KY
    Jackson 14 KY
    Letta 12 KY
Abigail 10 KY (ours was born 4 Feb. 1840)
    Parallee 8 KY
    William 21 KY
    Mahala 21 KY

Edward had died between 1843 (last land entry) and 1847
(Ruth Johnson mentioned alone in father's will--other children mentioned
with spouse). I don't know if Ruth came with Campbell and
Abigail to Iron Co. or not. Campbell married in Iron Co. in 1860 and
Abigail in 1857. Mud Creek, where Edward owned land, is just inside the
    Floyd Co. line.
The Johnsons had dealings in Pike Co. since Ruth's parents lived in
Pike Co. and John (Edward and Ruth's oldest son) married in Pike Co.
