Iron County Register, March 21, 1912

John J.W. Miller was born January 30, 1830. Departed this life March 8, 1912. Aged 82 years, 1 month and 8 days. His funeral was preached by Rev. Abernathy of Piedmont, at Liberty Church House, to many sorrowing relatives and sympathizing friends, after which his form was laid to rest in Liberty Cemetery, there to quietly sleep until the resurrection morn.

He was united in marriage to Rebecca R. Sutton in 1853. The fruits of this union were eleven children, four boys and seven girls; only six of them are living, the others lie with their mother preceding the father and husband to the Glory Land several years sooner, many of them having died in infancy. Those living are Ulissus, John S., Mrs. W.H. Hughes (Jannie), Mrs. J.W. Polk (Laura), Mrs. R. S. Huff (Paralee), Mrs. Joseph Selinger (Maggie). There are thirty-three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He professed religion a number of years ago, and although he never united with any church, he lived a faithful Christian up to the hour of his death, and bore his last sufferings with Christian fortitude. He suffered nine days with pneumonia and although he had the best medical aid that could be obtained and the most careful nursing by his children, all proved of no avail. During his illness he was visited by many of his friends and neighbors for miles around, who were ever ready to assist in any way thatwas needful, for which we will ever hold them in grateful remembrance.

Now, that we realize that he is gone, we feel assured that our loss is his eternal gain. He is free from the cares and troubles of this life. And sad as was the parting, we would not call him back, for as we know it is appointed unto man once to die, and we know not how soon we will all be called to join our father and loved ones in a far better land than this, where there will be no more sad partings and no farewell tears ever shed.

He was both father and mother to us, our mother having died when we were small, and no father ever filled that position better than he did. When I think that the dear hands that ministered to our childish wants are stilled, and the lips that always gave us such wise counsel in later years are now silent, I can hardly realize it, but we will humbly bow in submission to the will of Him who has bereft us. Our father has gone but he has left us a noble heritage, that of an untarnished name which is far betterthan all the wealth of this world, for as he often told us "A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches." But his work is finished, life with its toil and labor has ended, and while his body is resting in the silent tomb his spirit has returned to God who gave it. And he is enjoying that perfect rest, which awaits all the real faithful. As I try to write I think of a verse of a hymn he loved so well.

We will sleep but not forever
In that lone sad silent grave
Praised be the Lord that liveth
    Praised be he that gave
    In that bright eternal city
    Death can never, never come.
In His own good time he'll call us
From our rest to home, sweet home

    J.W.H.

    FAMILY OF JOHN W. MILLER

When John arrived in Madison County is uncertain. One story says the Miller boys came down the river by boat. Those boys were Jacob, George, and John and as they were born in Virginia a guess is they came down the Ohio River.

One of George's sons used the surname Wertmiller and one John's daughters also used Wertmiller when she married John’s grandson James L.George, born 8 April 1885/6 died 13 February 1984, said the Millers always claimed they came from Holland. Using theseclues, research indicates this family descended from Joris Wertmuller who came to this country in 1682 and settled in the Georgetown area of Pennsylvania. A George Wertmuller is mentioned as being injured during a storm at sea on the same boat that Joriscame on, but nothing else is known about George.

These Wertmullers were Swiss, but due to religious persecution migrated to Holland which was more tolerant of various religions.

The Wertmullers were Anabaptist. This information is from the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Another source of information may be the Mennonite Library and Archives of Eastern Pennsylvania at Lansdale, Pennsylvania.

Information shows Joris left sons, a brother, a sister, and a brother-in-law, Benedict Kunts in Amsterdam. The Wertmillers appear later in Virginia in the counties of Hampshire, Pendleton, Rockingham and Shenandoah. Some of these counties are now in West Virginia. The predominate names were:
John and George, with one Yorie or Yoris found there. The last record found there is in 1811 when a John Wertmuller and wife Margaret sold their land in
Pendleton County The 1810 Census shows this John was over 45 years old, indicating he was born in 1765 or earlier.

Probate records in Madison Comity on the estate of Isham Harrison shows the first wife of John W. Miller was Sarah Harrison, daughter of Isham and Amey Harrison. Sarah had preceded her father in death. The children of John and Sarah, all born in Madison County were: George H., born 1823/4, married Louisa J Hemby. Amey married Mathew McDade. Elizay married (1st) Charles Clevelon and (2nd) a Huffman. Elizabeth married Washington Eaton. In 1851, Washington was granted 160 acres on Marble Creek in Madison County for his service in Capt McNair's Company in the 3rd Regiment of the Missouri Volunteers. Sarah married a Jordan. John J., born 1830, married Rebecca Rachel Sutton. Nancy M. C., she is believed to have died very young. John W Miller married (second) Margaret Matthews, daughter of John and Mary Polly (Clay) Matthews. The minutes of the Board of Land Commissioners indicate John Matthews received permission to settle here in 1802 from the local Commandant, P. Deluziere. These minutes also say t

John Matthews served two terms, 1832 and 1834, in the Missouri Senate from District No. 2, which consisted of Madison, Wayne and Ripley Counties.

John Matthews (second wife) Mary Clay Matthews was the daughter of Jeremiah and Francie Johnston Clay. Jeremiah first appears in Missouri records in 1799.

The children of John W. Miller and second wife Margaret were: William B., born 1837, died 1864; Martha D., married Lewis Williams, lived in Tennessee and Florida where she died 12 March 1923; James Monroe, born 1841; Julia Ann, married William C. Thomas;Sophia E., married Samuel S. Andrews, Jr. They spent their lives in the Fredericktown area; Helen M., born 21 March 1848, died 7 March 1930, married James A. D. George; Laura E., born 1849, died March 1885 in Gibson County, Tennessee, married James W. Porter; Charles T., born 6 September 1850, died February 1914, married Minnie A. Decker; Margaret T., born 9 February 1853, died 31 October 1885, buried in Hays Cemetery at Brunot, Wayne County, Missouri, married George W. Smith; Thomas B., born 1855, never married; Malissa, born 1857, married Louis H. Johnson, they lived in the St. Louis, Missouri area.

I guess you could say, John W. Miller had a large family.

John W. Miller was appointed justice of the Peace in Madison County by the Governor in August 1828 and is believed to have served in that capacity in Liberty Township until that area became Iron County in 1857. His farm was on Marble Creek in section 3, Township 32 North, Range 32 East. His house was on the west side of the road just north of the hill still known by many as Miller Hill on Highway E. Tradition says the polling place in Liberty Township in Iron County’s first election was one of John’s stables. John was elected County Judge in that election. He only served one term. John died 29 October 1882. He was believed to have been 89 years old. The newspaper said Judge Miller died of old age. John and his wife were buried on their farm.

    History of Iron County
History of Southeast Missouri, Goodspeed Publishing Co., 1888.
    Iron County Formed.

The county of Iron was erected from portions of the counties of St. Francois, Madison, Washington, Dent, Reynolds and Wayne, by an act of the Legislature approved February 17, 1857 Maj. John Polk, representative of Madison County (but a resident of the proposed new county), Conrad C. Ziegler, of Ste. Genevieve, member of the State Senate, and James Lindsay, enrolling clerk of the Senate, were instrumental in securing the passage of the act Great difficulty was experienced in securing sufficient territory without reducing other counties below their constitutional limits, hence the peculiar shape of the county At a special election ordered to held on the first Monday in June, 1857, J. V. Logan, John W. Miller and Moses Edwards were chosen members of the county court; John F. T. Edwards, clerk of the courts, and John Cole, sheriff The county court held its first meeting in Arcadia, on August 4, 1857, when the county was divided into seven municipal townships, Dent, Kaolin, Iron, Pilot Knob, Arcadia, Libe

By the act forming the county the county was made liable for its proportionate part of stock subscribed to the Fredericktown & Pilot Knob Gravel Road Company, incorporated February 5, 1855, and accordingly, an order was made for the erection of a courthouse and the issuing of county bonds, bearing ten per cent of interest, for $10,000. In April the contract for the courthouse was awarded to George S. Evans and William F. Mitchell for the sum of $14,000, and John V. Logan was appointed to superintend the work The corner-stone for the new building was laid on the 4th of July, 1858, and in October, 1860, it was completed and occupied In April, 1866, $10,000 was appropriated for the erection of a jail, and the contract for the building awarded to Thompson & Flynn for $8,972.50 The total debt of the county now reached the sum of nearly $18,000, but from that time on it steadily reduced There is now no bonded debt, and during the year 1887, $4,958 was appropriated for the improvement of roads, in addition t

The circuit court for Iron County was organized on May 16, 1858, by Judge John H. Stone The members of the first grand jury were John F. Green, Elbridge Clayton, John Imboden, J. H. Russell, Joseph Sutton, George W. Young, James Sloan, John P. Hayden, Samuel Rice, William Boatwright, Michael Vineyard, Andrew Henson, Frank P. Smith, Joseph Beal An indictment was returned against Malinda and Washington Brannum for grand larceny The former was convicted, and sentenced to the penitentiary for two years The latter was acquitted In 1860 William H. Young was arrested for the murder of his father, whom he had stabbed in a fit of intoxication He obtained a change of venue to Reynolds County, and while out on bail was killed in a fight There have been several convictions of murder in the various degrees, but none have paid the death penalty in Iron County.
