215 | Email from Kelly Himmel 4 Sep 2018: I decided to try to work back from a person I believe to be the brother of Thomas Haile, Leeman Haile (1802-1877-dates are on several websites without references.). My evidence for this is purely based on circumstantial evidence. Leeman married Marillis Edwards in Rutherford County, TN in 1832 and Thomas Haile named his first son Leeman and a daughter Marillus. I found out that shortly afterward Leeman and Marillis moved to Yalobusha County, MS. Leeman purchased several tracts of land in Yalobusha and Grenada Cos. and became a merchant. Very interestingly, he enlisted in the Union Army in the Civil War, despite being old enough to avoid fighting for either side and living in place where pro-Confederate sentiment was overwhelming. There are a number of Haile burials in the Coffeyville (MS) City Cemetery and the following two are of the most interest to me Marillis Edwards Haile Died on August 20, 1836. The inscription is Wife of Leeman Haile; Daughter of James and Nancy Edwards. James Dudley Haile January 14, 1834-April 28, 1903 I assume to be the son of Leeman and Marillis. In the Stevens Cemetery in Yalobusha County there is another Haile burial of interest: Joseph Haile May 6, 1797-January 10, 1872. The inscription gives his birthplace as Micklinburg (Mecklenburg) Co., Virginia . I believe that Joseph might be a brother to Thomas and Leeman. | Haile, Leeman (65916374)

B. Chitwood, another of the early pioneers of Reynolds County, Mo., was born in Campbell County, Tenn., on the 6th of July, 1828, to the marriage of William and Cecili (Whitecotton) Chitwood, both natives of that State also. The paternal grandfather, Pleasant Chitwood, passed his entire life in Tennessee, engaged in farming. The maternal grandfather, Aaron Whitecotton, came to this county in 1844, and followed farming on Webb's Creek until his death about 1866. The parents of our subject were married in their native State, and in 1841 they moved with ox-teams from that State to Reynolds County, Mo. They settled on a farm on Webb's Creek, in the woods, and there the father died a few years later, leaving our subject, who was the eldest of the family, although but sixteen years of age, to take charge of affairs. Mrs. Chitwood reared her family and after all were married she was wedded to J. Odell. Both are now deceased, her death occurring in 1878. 235 | -- From the Jackson Post & Cash - Book, June 26, 1974, Jackson, Missouri Mitchell Fleming honored; soldier in Revolutionary War… By: TOM NEUMEYER Mrs. Gale Seabaugh’s great, great, great, great, grandfather, Mitchell Flaming, came briefly into the limelight last Friday as his final resting place was marked by the Daughters of the American Revolution with a bronze plaque honoring him as a soldier inthe Revolutionary War. Because few of its veterans came this far west, such a plaque is relatively unique in this area. The grave is near New Wells on the old Fleming farm, which is now owned by Marvin Richter. Mrs. Seabaugh, who is Secretary at the Presbyterian Church 1n Jackson, provided the information on her ancestor for this article, with a assistance from her grandfather, H. R. Stevenson of Fruitland. Mitchell Fleming was born in April, 1761, in Kent County, Del. In a few years, the Fleming family pulled up stakes and moved south to Rowan County, N.C. near the Coddle Creek Church. He grew up fast in the wilderness that was short on comforts and long on hardships. In 1777 he enlisted in Captain Craig’s Company, of Col. Francis Locke's Regiment at the age of 16. The Company was involved in one skirmish at Coney Island on the Savannah River. In 1782 Fleming became a private in Captain James Stevenson's Company of Col. Isaac's North Carolina Regiment. The pay receipts from the period of his service are listed in North Carolina records. With the war’s finale, he married Miss Agnes Kennedy June 27, 1784, in Rowan County N.C. The new family established a farm in Meckinburg (now Cabarrus) County with land he inherited from his father, George Fleming. In 1819 the family joined a group of colonists and left North Carolina by wagon train to arrive in Cape Girardeau County. After arriving, Fleming bought some land in Shawnee and Apple Creek Townships at $1.25 an acre. Land patients were issued for his purchases in 1821 and 1823. The land was scoured mostly in 80 acre plots for a total of 840 acres. Practically all of it waslocated among various creek bottoms. As each of his daughters married, he deeded his new son in law an eighty acre tract, which later was willed to the daughter. On September 21, 1821, Fleming's wife died. Agnes was born in Chester Co., Pennsylvania July 20, 1760, and bore all of Fleming's children. In 1824 he took a second wife, Miss Jane Stevenson, who was a sister to his son in law, James Stevenson. Jane andJames were children of Fleming's commander, Capt. James Stevenson. James married Fleming's eldest daughter, Jane. Besides some confusion in names this caused some confusion in relationships. Jane Stevenson Fleming’s brother, James became her son in law after her marriage. Mitchell Fleming began receiving a pension for his tour of duty in the war in 1832 when Congress passed a general pension act. His application was executed December 22, 1832 in Cape Girardeau County. The Mitchell Fleming family was charter members of Apple Creek Presbyterian Church. He had the position of first ruling elder till a year before his death. Fleming must have been a deeply religious man, for when finds were being raised to pay for the new church, be pledged his entire pension from the war until the building was paid for. Mitchell Fleming passed away April 18, 1837, at the age of 76, after leading quite a full life. His wife, Jane, followed him in death four days later. The Fleming family plot contains the graves of Mitchell Fleming, his two wives, his daughter Margaret, and a son, Hiram, and his two wives and a daughter. The plot was situated on a hill in the Fleming farm that now belongs to Marvin Richter. Fleming's tombstone is decorated with thirteen stars around the base of the ball on the top. Fleming's nine children, all by his first wife, Agnes, were as follows: • Jane. She was born January 11, 1786, married James Stevenson in N. C., and died April 16, 1865, and was buried in Apple Creek Cemetery. • William married Ginny Woodside in N. C. in 1808 and remained in that state. • Richard married Jean Waddington in N. C. in 1814 and also remained there. • Margaret was born February 17, 1791, died August 15, 1822, having not married, and was buried in the family cemetery. • Mary was born August 26, 1794, married Benjamin Brown in 1824, died March 20, 1864, and was buried in the Apple Creek Cemetery. • Agnes was born December 23, 1795, married Robert S. McFarland December 20, 1821, went to Bond County, Ill. in 1837, died May 12,1865 and was buried in Bethel Cemetery, Bond County. • Elizabeth married James B. Little in 1824 and it is thought they moved to Texas. • Sarah was born January 18, 1802, married Zenas N. Ross, died September 27, 1879, and was buried in the Apple Creek Cemetery. • Hiram was born August 17, 1804, was a merchant who had one of the first stores is Jackson, married to Jane Stevenson, January 1837, who died that December, and then married Margaret Stevenson by whom he had one daughter, Martha Jane, born in 1842 and died 1846. The whole family is buried in the Fleming Cemetery. | Fleming, Mitchel (71123758)

I am almost certain that your great grandmother Abigail Johnson is the sister of my great grandfather Campbell Johnson. My great grandfather Campbell Johnson was born March 1834 in floyd county Kentucky. He had a older sister Elizabeth Johnson born in Virginia and a older brother born in Virginia. Elizabeth married William Riley Mead aug. 08, 1841 in Floyd County, Kentucky. Elizabeth and her husband and children John & his wife mary and my great grandfather Campbell came to Reynolds County, Mo about 1855. On June 29, 1860 Campbell married Charlotte Hannah in Iron County. I have reason to beleive that Ruth Trout and Edward Johnson are the parents of my great grandfather. I had contact with a man from Illinois and in his notes Christian Trout & Mary elizabeth Gearhart are the parents of Ruth Trout. and in these notes was my Aunt Elizabeth Johnson and her husband William Riley Mead and their daughter Rossanah Mead that married James K. Polk Randolph, he also listed Ruth Trouts brothers and sisters and their spouses. and their children but they didn't know who Ruth & Edwards children were. SECOND GENERATION !OBITUARY OBITUARY OF MARY (POLLY) LEWIS APRIL 5, 1916 Mary, commonly known as Polly Lewis, was born in Tenn. June 15, 1831. Her maiden name was Griffith. She was married to Robert Lewis in Tenn. They moved to Arkansas, then to Missouri, settled on Carver Creek 2 1/2 miles from Sabula, in 1852. She departed this life April 5, 1916, aged 84 years, 9 months, and 20 days. She was the mother of 16 children, of whom 11 are living, 67 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren. She was a member of the United Baptist church at Big Creek for almost half century. The remains were laid to rest by the side of her husband in the Emily Chapel burying grounds to await the raising of the just. Elder John Proffit preached the funeral services, with Elder J. R. Singleton concluding. Being feeble for the past several months yet cheerful, we expected a sudden departure, but not as it was. Working all day at her carpet rags, eating a hearty supper and going to bed as usual. The old home was wrapped in darkness and slumber with its four occupants. In the first hour of the new day about 1 o'clock the summons came. '0, Lord' in a voice as of prayer, came from the bedroom and aroused the vigilant daughter. In a very few moments that spirit who had known its tenement of clay and went to God who gave it. Now we are satisfied, not because mother is gone, but because we know where she has gone. Rest and rejoice thou weary mother, until we come! We know she can't come to us, but we can go to her. And now may the father of light keep unto the hollow of hand this brother and sisters hand as a peaceful and loving family is the earnest prayer of this SON (Written by her son Joel) (above was copied from the original is it appeared in the paper.by Boris Birdsong on Nov. 1, 1964) (Copy given to Linda Lewis in August 1990 by Billie J. He owned a nice farm near the Roberts community but when he grew older and his boys all left the farm to find employment in the city he moved to town and sold his farm now owned by R. D. Mann. He will be missed by his family and friends. He leaves his widow and nine children who were all here to attend the funeral except Mrs. Ben Knight of Parkville, Missouri, who came after getting the news about her fathers death but received a telephone message after arriving here that her husband became ill and had entered a hospital. She and her children left at once to return to Parkville to be near him. We are glad to report he is improving. Mr. Lewis' wife, the former Miss Zella Seal passed away some years ago. She was the mother of his children. In later years he was married to Miss Ailsey Blanton of Ironton. (Copy of certificate received from Carolyn Keathley McBurney in June 1991) !OBITUARY AGED MAN KILLS SELF BLACK RIVER MAN SHOOTS HIMSELF AND DIES This community was shocked and grieved last Friday to hear that Robert Lee (known as Bob) Lewis of Black River, had shot himself that day. Outside of his being in bad health for some time no reason could be ascribed for the act. He was born on January 26, 1867 and was 75 years old. He had lived around Annapolis all his life. On April 25, 1891, more than 52 years ago, he was married to Elma Maggie Sheldon. To this union was born 12 children, four dying in infancy and one, Edna, passing away at the age of 13. The seven, who with the wife, survive are: Mrs. Macey Slusher, of St. Louis; Mrs. Shirley Johnson, Annapolis; Mrs. Anna Miller and Freddie, the surviving son, both of St. Louis; Mrs. Clara Brown, of Annapolis; Mrs. Mary Trask,of Dexter; Mrs. Maxine Trask, of St. Louis. Mr. Lewis was converted at an early age and joined the Presbyterian church. He lived a useful life, happy in his work and was loved by all who knew him. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Presbyterian church in Annapolis. The service was in the charge of Rev. Everett Lewis, formerly of Sabula, but now of Ironton, and was assisted by Rev. Paler and Rev. Curt. Burial was at the Lewis cemetery at Leadanna. (THE MOUNTAIN ECHO newspaper ...Annapolis, Iron County, Missouri...Friday, July 9, 1943) !OBITUARY ANNAPOLIS RESIDENT DIES OF GUN--SHOT WOUND Robert Lee Lewis, well known and highly regarded citizen of the south end of the county, was found dead a hundred yards or so from his farm hose last Friday from gun shot wounds, accidentally or self inflicted, no one seemingly certain which. At first word came here that he had shot himself, but this has since been discounted to a certain degree as no one can give any reasonable cause for such decision. It is said that he had gone, with his Winchester Rifle, to the rear of his hose where skunks had been catching chickens, supposedly to kill skunks, as he had done the previous few days. To get where the varmints were would necessitate climbing a fence where he was found after a shot was heard by members of the family, and they are more or less of the opinion that in attempting to cross the fence the gun was accidentally discharged, the bullet striking his in the chest. An ambulance was summoned immediately but Mr. Lewis expired before reaching the hospital. Robert Lee Lewis, son of William and Abigail Lewis, was born near Annapolis, No., January 26, 1867, and departed this life July 2, 1943, being aged 75 years, 4 months and 24 days. A little more than fifty two years ago, on April 5, 1891, he was married toElsa Maggie Sheldon. To this union were born 12 children, four dying in infancy, and one, Edna, passing away at 13 years of age. The seven, who with the widow, survive, are: Mrs. Macey Slusher, St. Louis; Mrs. Shirley Johnson, Annapolis; Mrs. Anna Millerand Freddie, the one surviving son, St. Louis; Mrs. Clara Brown, Annapolis; Mrs. Mary Trask, Dexter; Mrs. Maxine Trask, St. Louis. Also left to mourn his passing are 24 grandchildren, one great grandchild, two sisters, Mrs. Martha Keathley, Ironton; Mrs. Kate Robinson, Des Arc; five brothers, Jerome and J.M., Des Arc; Fred, Cape Girardeau; John, Flat River, and William of St. Louis. Deceased was converted at an early age and became a member of the Presbyterian church. He lived a useful life, happy in his work, and was loved by all who knew him. Funeral services were held from the Presbyterian church, Annapolis, Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. E.E. Lewis, of Ironton, assisted by Rev. Paler and Rev. Curt of Annapolis, with interment in the Lewis Cemetery, near there, in charge of N.R. White and Sons, Ironton. The Register extends profound sympathy to the family in their sad bereavement. He and his sister, Kizzie, were raised by an uncle. !NOTES The following stories about William Punkin Lewis were told to Opal Lewis by her father-in-law, Henry Lewis. Henry Lewis was about 90 years old when he told these stories. As a boy Henry went to Manville, Arkansas (10 or 15 miles from Texanona) with his father to work in the timber, where there were forests of big yellow pine. Henry said his dad never smoked or drank. Punkin didn't do such joking, but he did get out in the yard and play with the kids. Punkin liked to go to church. He wore a beard in the winter and shaved it off in the summer, he usually had a mustach. Henry said one time he and Bill Palmer, a neighbor, were playing in the apple orchard and his dad had shaved off his beard. Punkin came up there to scare them. Bill didn't know his and ran. Henry picked up rocks and threw at Punkin. Henry just laughed when he told this story. Henry said his dad had 40 acres where Alpha lived. One time Henry and another boy were playing anti-over and got in a fight. Their fathers were on the other side of the house and Henry had the boys nose bleeding. Their fathers nearly got in a fight over it. Henry and the boy couldn't play together the rest of the day. When they were working in the timber, they had huge teams. Punkin Lewis was in the lead team and it would take all day to go 10 miles. Doc Buford owned the mill and he liked to have fun. He told Henry if he would scare the Negro real bad (the Negro drove one team and was always scared), that he would give him something, so he didn't go with them and Henry put a sheet over his head and nearly scared the Negro to death. The Negro jumped down and ran all the way in and told them that he had seen a ghost. They had 4 teams and 4 mules to a wagon, this was when the city of Texanana was being made. When a factory, or big house was being built they furnished the green lumber. They also shipped alot out. Henry's father went down there to be in charge for Buford---6 days a week. James Buford owned the mill and Doc was in charge (overseer). Doc did finally buy in the Bill. They stayed down there 2 years once and one year another time. He thought they were English, he didn't remember his mother, grandfather remarried and so did his father. He never knew his &others people. He didn't think they gee hawed to such. His step mother was very good to his, he didn't feel his own mother could have been any better to his. While in Arkansas Henry made $1.25 a day and his dad kept a dollar so he got the quarter. Henry's dad was called pumpkin. He said his dad raised the biggest pumpkins in his fields. Said he sold alot of them in Mandville, Arkansas for 25 cents each. They did not own land down there, just lived and worked down there. Henry said his dad had black hair and it never turned grey but his beard was white. His sister had real black hair. His dad had what they called granulated sore eyes and had to go to the hospital for 2 weeks once. They rolled his eye lids with a roller and squeezed thee. Henry said his father said it really did hurt bad but he never made a sound. Said his dad was real strong and brave. !OBITUARY OLD RESIDENT GONE TO REST Uncle William Lewis was born in Iron County Mar. 5, 1859, and died at his home near Annapolis July 10, 1933, age 74 years, 4 months and 5 days. Marion's father was born in Tennessee and his mother was born in Kentucky. They lived in a rented home. Marion was a farmer. Marion and Malinda could both read and speak English. Marion could also write but Malinda couldn't. !NEWSPAPER ARTICLES IN MEMORY One year ago after a long and serious illness, death came to our home and claimed one of the best of fathers, Marion Lewis, who died in his home April 14, 1926. Although a year has passed, the memory of this dear one is fresh to us as if it had been only yesterday and we feel that he was too noble a citizen, too devoted a father, too true a husband, not to have a fitting obituary. Our father, the subject of this writing, was born Sept. 17, 1858 in Iron County, No., of which he was a resident all his life, and died at the age of 67 years, 6 months and 28 days, being the eldest of 10 children of the late Uncle Billy and Aunt Abby Lewis. He was united in marriage to Malinda J. Jackson March 13, 1881 and to this union were born 9 children, 4 of them dying in infancy. Those living are: Mrs. Lillie Chilton, Farmington, No.; Mrs. Allie Stevenson, Detroit, Mich.; Chas. Lewis of Annapolis; Mrs.Ruth Brever, Annapolis; Mrs. Ethel Ruble, Des Arc; besides he leaves a wife, 21 grandchildren and 5 greatgrandchildren, and friends without number that his clean and Christian life was accountable for. He professed faith in Christ at the age of 16 years and was baptised by Br o. Settles into the Missionary Baptist church at Annapolis, but later when this church disbanded, he, with his wife, joined the general Baptist Church of which he was a member for 26 years or until God saw fit to call his to his revard. He was always found at his post of duty whatever it demanded. There was never any finding fault or dissatisfaction with him, always looking on the bright side of things. He was active in church and religious affairs as well as political, serving two terms as county judge in Iron county. His many friends will remember his as being generous, big hearted and kind, always having a word or jest for every one he met. The funeral was conducted by Bro. Z.F. Yount and Bro. J. W. Alcorn at the Presbyterian church, it being the closest church. The six living brothers acted as pall bearers. Quite a large crowd attended the funeral, friends and relatives from several distantplaces. He was laid to rest by the side of his dead babies at the Lewis cemetery near Annapolis, a place we will always hold sacred to our hearts, for there we know lies one of the best friends we children and mother had on earth. Oh, what it means to give up father. One year ago we watched life slowly ebb out and it has been a year of heartaches and loneliness. Sometimes it sees only a dream that father is gone from us forever. Then there's the awakening, it is true but yet we know that we, too have thesame debt to pay and it wont be long; it may be soon,' and we will look to the hills from which our strength cometh and lean heavily on the arms of our burden bearer, for we feel assured that some day if we are as faithful as the one that taught us May each of us five children be able to say if we, like father, were called out: We want to like everybody. May we, a broken family, look forward. Wife and Children. Annapolis, Mo., April 25. (THE MOUNTAIN ECHO newspaper... We had him in our classes for about two years. He was a lad who had no trouble in making friends, not only among the students but his teachers, too. His was a winning smile and a laughing voice. When anything was to be done, he was ready and always did his share of the hard work, carnival, May Day, whatever it was. Then, one day, he came to us and said he was quitting school to enlist in the service of his country. Some time later, he was back on furlough and came to visit the school, looking so nice in his uniform. Not only the boys but the girls all crowded around him to visit with him during his too-short stay. The war was going badly and he, with a lot of other young lads, was rushed in to stem the German tide. The Nazis were stopped but it took a lot of blood to do it. Some of it was our Iron County lads'. (THE MOUNTAIN ECHO newspaper... Ironton, Iron County, Missouri...Dec. 12, 1947) - Research notes courtesy of Linda E. He was born May 12, 1849, and lived to be 58 years, 3 months and 20 days of age. He leaves four children to mourn his loss: Jas. and Tom Ruble, Mrs. Jas. Stevenson and Mrs. Jas. Clifford. His wife died some fifteen years ago and he has lived with his children ever since. While he was not a church member, yet he lived a moral and religious life, and when the time case for him to go he was perfectly resigned to theMaster's will. He was always ready to help the needy and afflicted. He will be missed, not only by his children, but by everyone who knew his. (copied from the 9/12/1907 issue of the IRON COUNTY REGISTER newspaper of Iron County, Missouri) !OBITUARY It was with sad hearts that the people of this community gathered at the Sutton cemetery on the 2nd. of this month, to take the last look and commit to the dust the form of their beloved relative and friend, Wm. Ruble, aged 58 years and 3 months. The services were conducted by Rev. John Alcorn at the cemetery. Wm. Ruble was born at Vulcan, No., May 12,1849. In the year of I868 he was united in marriage to Hepsy Lewis. There were born of this marriage six children, four of which survive him. His wife died when the children were small, leaving his to fill the place of father and mother both. He never married again, but reared his children to manhood and womanhood alone. After they were all married he made his home with one or the other of them. He was at the hose of his youngest son when he died. He was always a kind and loving father, and was loved and respected by all who knew his. He was an inmate of our house for about two years, and although he was not a member of any church, I don't remember of ever seeing his do an act or hearing his speak in anyway unbecoming a Christian. He always respected religion and liked to attend church. He was confined to his bed three weeks before he died and suffered a great deal. He said if he got able to be about again his first act would be to join the church. He seemed to be perfectly willing to die. He said he was not afraid to die, but hated to leave his children. He spent the greater part of Saturday, Saturday night and Sunday praying. He prayed for his children and for the people who came out in the heat to visit his. He died Sunday night, September 1, 1907, at half past ten o'clock. He leaves two sons, two daughters, eighteen grandchildren, four brothers, one sister and hosts of other relatives and friends to mourn his loss. It was hard to give his up, but we know that our loss is his gain, and he has gone to a better world, where he is free from all pain and care. He is not lost; but gone before. God took his from a world of care in everlasting bliss to share. A loving father from us is gone, A voice we loved is stilled; A place is vacant in our home Which never can be filled. After an illness of ten days died at the residence of her son-in-law, John Brewer, Cranepond, Saturday, March 24, 1888, aged 65 years. Deceased was the oldest daughter of George Lewis who died in 1858. Having lost her husband Jas. Many sorrowing relativesand friends followed her to the family burying ground, near Sabula, where she was quietly laid to final rest beside her sleeping father. The mother of 11 children, 6 of whom survive her, she was always an active Christian worker, leading a quiet and useful life. 276 | !OBITUARY Patty Casteel the subject of this sketch died March 25, 1919 at her old home on Brushy Creek Annapolis district at the age of 80 years. She was the last of the old Lewis family whose ancestors came to this country from Tennessee more than 65 years ago. Her parents names were George and Elizabeth Lewis who settled the mouth of Carver Creek just above Sabula. When they came to this country they reared a family of six boys and five girls all of whom except one was born in Tennessee and it sight be said that they were the grand and great grandparents of the Lewis Families of this part of the country. Now let us turn again to the subject of this sketch Aunt Patty or Grandma as she was most commonly called was the wife of Uncle James Casteel of Annapolis who proceeded her to the other shore just seven years ago. We do not feel we can begin to portray the beauty, love, and meekness that were found in the sainted mother like Grandma Casteel. She was the mother of seven children two boys and five girls, six of whom are still living. A host of grand and great grandchildren to mourn her loss, Grandma became a Christian in the early part of her life and proved her faith by her works. She treated all of her children as nearly alike as she was able to do when they were young and when they became old they did not forsake her as we saw them at the grave. The saddest sight of all two sons and a daughter whose heads were turning grey were weeping most bitterly because their dear mother was gone to return no more. Even her grandchildren wept as though their hearts was broken such love as does not stop here. It w Grandma was sick only a few hours and she spent a few moments in the garden the day before she died with her daughter Mrs. Reynolds and said to her that she was lonesome and tired of living. She will be greatly missed by all the children and none will miss her more that Mrs.Bell Lotts who was with her almost constantly for thirty years. Funeral services were conducted at the grave with singing and prayer and a short talk by the writer. After which the body was laid to rest at the side of the Husband. She was married to Robert Lewis in Tenn. They moved to Arkansas, then to Missouri, settled on Carver Creek 2 1/2 miles frog Sabula, in 1852. She departed this life April 5, 1916, aged 84 years, 9 months, and 20 days. She was the mother of 16 children, of whom 11 are living, 67 grandchildren, 44 great grandchildren. In a very few moments that spirit who had known it's tenement of clay and went to Godwho gave it. Now we are satisfied, not because mother is gone, but because we know where she has gone. Rest and rejoice thou weary mother, until we come! We know she can't come to us, but we can go to her. And now may the father of light keep unto the hollow of hand this brother and sisters hand as a peaceful and loving family is the earnest prayer of this SON (Written by her son Joel) (above was copied from the original is it appeared in the paper. by Boris Birdsong on Nov. 1, 1964) (Copy given to Linda Lewis in August 1990 by Billie J. 296 | "I will explain how I came to this conclusion if anyone wants to know, but I am now confident that I have identified the family of my great grandmother, Adeline Lewis (Green). And of course, this comes right after I had resigned myself to another ten years of searching. I have suspected for several weeks that the Jacob Lewis family of Madison County Missouri was my line, and that his daughter Bidda was my great grandmother. However, I had given up on finding any hard facts that would allow me to make thisclaim with confidence. People did occasionally change their first names, but it is not all that common. I needed something substantial before accepting a name change. Then I discovered that Jacob's youngest daughter Emeline (Lewis) Voyles and her husbandhad joined Allen and Adeline Green in the very small town of Buda, Illinois for several years in the late 1870s and early 1880s. With all the other evidence pointing to this connection, I am now convinced. Bidda and Adeline are the same person, and she In a way I feel a little sad because I had researched several Lewis lines so diligently I got to feel like I knew them personally. There is a sense of loss to realize they are not my family. But then, all of them did come out of North Carolina, so a common bond may yet exist. A quick look at the records gives me an overview of this family. There were at least two Lewis brothers, John and Benjamin, living in Buncombe County, North Carolina after the Revolutionary War. Together they moved to Cocke County, Tennessee, which was nogreat distance. I cannot tell yet just when they made the move because the census records of Tennessee are missing until 1830. In the early 1820s the state of Tennessee began selling land in that area very cheaply (12 1/2 cents per acre) to raise money for their school system. It is possible that the Lewis families came at that time, but I can't say yet. This is all too new for me at this time. Apparently John and Benjamin Lewis had a sister Bidda, and she married a Randolph Lane (Lain). This family was among the Cocke County settlers. Two of the next generation, George and Jacob Lewis, were born in N C, but reached adulthood in Cocke County where they married. Jacob married Mary Martin, and these would be my great great grandparents. Since Mary would not have been alone as a young single girl on the wilderness frontier, her family was no doubt in Cocke County also. Adeline (Bidda) Green, my great grandmother, stated in the 1880 census that her mother was born in South Carolina. Often times the place someone spent their childhood is confused in the census records with the actual place of birth. Mary (Martin) Lewis lists Tennessee as her place ofbirth, but I noticed that the elder head of the Martin family in 1830 Cocke County is Samuel Martin. He is a veteran of the Revolution War having served from South Carolina. This is all coming together. I will encourage any of you who wish to work together to sort out this family to contact me and begin exchanging information. One of the immediate problems is to identify which of the SE Missouri Lewis families is descended from John, and which from Benjamin. About all we know for now as far as I know is that Helen has placed Sampson Lewis of Butler County Missouri with Benjamin. There is a Zacariah Lewis also in Butler who is older than Sampson and apparently connected, but not necessarily a brother. Also, the possibility exists that John, Benjamin, and Bidda had other siblings. In fact, it is even likely. I am very eager to examine the pension file for Samuel Martin to find out where he lived in SC, and if there were any Lewis families in the same area. Is this exciting or what????" Vern Eldridge writes that Palmer and Margeret Lane state that they recall Everett saying that his father (Moses) had told him that his mother's maiden name was "Dunn". Others feel that her maiden name might have been "Lewis" or 'Gilliand". In the 1850 Madison Co., MO census Biddy is not listed in the household of Randolph but she is there in 1860 Liberty Twp., Iron Co, MO - listing her birthplace as from South Carolina. July 12, 2000, Gary D. Lane I am again questioning Biddy's maiden name. We know she is listed as being from SC, and her children indicate their mother as being from SC. However the only families we find near Randolph who are from SC are the Dunns. With brother (?) John, in 1850, is his father-in-law Robert Gilliland, who is listed as being from SC. And next to Robert is his son William, b 1805, listed as being from TN. I'm going back to my original belief that Biddy is a Dunn, and I suspect she is the daughter of Mary Dunn. I realize Mary would have been about fourteen when Biddy was born. What's your thoughts on this? | Lewis, Biddy (48344704)
