Robert Gilliland Jr. was the son of Robert Gilliland Sr. Robert Gilliland Jr. married Jean ?1 On May 20, 1786, Robert sold 120 acres on Golden Grove Creek to William Armstrong. This was the tract of land that was originally granted to Robert, Sr. on May 26, 1784 but "delivered to his son." A Jean Gilliland also signed the deed. I'm assuming that Jean was Robert's wife. William Brasher was a witness.1

It appears that Robert moved to Kentucky in the latter part of the 1700's. On September 12, 1798, a land warrant was issued to Lewis Phillips for 150 acres of land on Drakes Creek in Warren County, Kentucky. On May 20, 1799, Lewis assigned this land to Robert Gilliland.2 It was then surveyed for Robert on July 13, 1799.3 On November 14, 1803, a patent was issued to Robert for the 150 acres. On March 18, 1805, Robert sold the 150 acres of land that were surveyed to him in 1799 to Alexander Gilliland for $300. We know this was the same land by its description.4 This is most likely the Alexander Gilliland who on December 19, 1801 sold the 251 acres of land on the east side of Saluda River, Greenville District, South Carolina, to Nathan Waddle, for 100 pounds.5

On July 19, 1802, Robert received a warrant for 250 acres of land. The warrant reads that the land was near Alexander Gilliland's 150 acre survey, assignee of Lewis Phillips.6 Robert signed over the right and title of this land to Alexander Gilliland in April (year not readable).6 Alexander had the land surveyed in January 1807 and patented on June 19, 1809.

The early Federal census records for Kentucky were destroyed, but published tax lists have served as replacements. Robert Gilliland is found on Drakes Creek in Warren County for the years 1801, 1802, 1803, and 1804.7

In the book Warren Co, KY Order Book; Vol 2, June 15, 1801 thru January 1, 1805 are found the following entries:

page 318 - July 15, 1802, ordered that Robert Gilliland be exempt from paying county levy in future. (This was generally done when people were old and unable to work.)

page 328 - July 15, 1802, Robert Gilliland, 250 acres beg. corner of Alexander Gilliland's 150 acres, assignee of Lewis Phillips running S 30 E then so far round the said survey for quantity.

page 434 - July 4, 1803, ordered that Robert Gilliland be fined $2.00 for contempt of this court.

page 453 - October 3, 1803, Robert Gilliland's line adjoins James Butler's 200 acres.

page 553 - July 2, 1804, Robert Gileland entitled to 50 acres as per entry filed.8

I could find no Gillilands at all in the 1810 Federal Census for Warren County, Kentucky.

Sarah (Cagle) Lewis was born in 1790 in Moore County, North Carolina and she died abt. Dec. 1850 in Marshall County, Alabama. She is the daughter of Jacob Cagle, Sr. (Apr. 01, 1755 NC - Aug. 14, 1845 TN) and his first wife, Sarah (MNU) Cagle (1755 NC - 1820 Buncombe Co. ,NC).

Sarah (Cagle)Lewis and Robert Lewis, Sr. were married before 1810 in North Carolina.

Robert Lewis, Sr. and Sarah Cagle Lewis are listed in the 1810 census of Buncombe, North Carolina. They moved from Buncombe, North Carolina to Marion County, Tennessee by 1820, and are listed in the 1820 census of Warren Co., TN. They then moved to Marion County, Tennessee by 1830 and are listed in the 1830 census of Marion County TN.

Sometime in the mid to late 1830's, Robert Lewis, Sr. and Sarah Cagle Lewis, loaded all their possessions on to a flat bottom boat in Marion County, TN and traveled down the Tennessee River and landed at Fort Deposit, Alabama. It is believed that some of Robert's brothers made the trip with him, as there were reportedly fourteen people aboard the flat bottom boat that landed at Fort Deposit.

From Fort Deposit, Alabama, Robert Lewis, Sr. and his wife, Sarah Cagle Lewis, and their children made their way to a near by mountain and settled at the bottom of that mountain. They built their home, cultivated the land and raised their younger children there. Over a period of time, the family members of Robert Lewis, Sr. and Sarah Cagle Lewis accumlated and owned 3,000 acres of land, which made up the area of the mountain, upon which they had settled on. The Mountain was later named "Lewis Mountain" after Robert Lewis, Sr.

Robert Lewis, Sr. and Sarah (Cagle) Lewis had eight children together by their marriage:

(1.) John Lewis (1816 NC - Aft. 1880 TN), he married Elizabeth Wilcoxen.

(2.) Leonard L. Lewis (1818 NC-1897 Marshall Co.,AL)
Married 1st: Dec. 27, 1839; Marshall Co., AL
Spouse 1: Mary Adeline Thompson (they had one child)

Married 2nd: Feb. 10, 1842; Marshall Co., AL
Spouse 2: Diannah Patterson (They had six children)

Married 3rd: Apr. 01, 1877; Coryell Co., TX
Spouse 3: Rachel Whittenburg (they did not have any
children together by their marriage)

(3.) Henry Lewis (1820 TN - Aft. 1880 AL), he married 1st to Margaret Patterson.; he married 2nd to Margaret Martha C. Key.

(4.) Charles L. Lewis (1823 TN - Oct. 28, 1888 TN), he married Julia Ann Henson.

(5.) Jacob Nathan Lewis (1826 TN - Aft. 1880 AL), he married 1st to Mary Whittenburg/he married 2nd to Elizabeth Emaline Hatfield.

(6.) Robert Lewis, Jr. (Nov 26, 1828 TN - 1868 AL), he married Mary Polly Whittenburg.

(7.) Margaret Lewis (born: 1832 TN - 1871 AL), she never married.

(8.) Katherine Lewis (1834 TN - 1914 TX), she married
Jacob "Jake" Whitenberg

Note: A careful study of all the census of Robert Lewis, Sr. and Sarah Cagle Lewis is suggested before adding any more children for them. On the early census where marks were made for other members in the household of Robert Lewis, there were no other marks for children

Robert Lewis, Sr. is the son of John Lewis (1740 Halifax, Halifax, VA- 1830 Spotsylvania, Spotsylvania, VA) and Elizabeth (Lax) Lewis (Born 1745 Halifax, Halifax, VA)

Robert Lewis, Sr. married Sarah Cagle before 1810 in North Carolina.

On the early census where marks were made for other members in the household of Robert Lewis, there were no other marks for children other than those named above. While there were errors on some of their census (marks in wrong sex or age lines, the above children are the only children born to Robert Lewis, Sr. and Sarah Cagle Lewis, and they do fit in, while no other children will fit in and follow in a logical order through out all of their census.

Jacob Cagle, Sr. is the son of Johan Theobald Dewalt "David" Kegel/Cagle and Katherine (Cockman) Kegel/Cagle. (Note: this is not Jacob Elias Cagle nor Jacob Cagle (1770 NC - 1838 MO), who married Catherine (MNU) and Lucy Darrough/Darrow). [See added information]

Jacob Cagle, Sr. was married first to Sarah (MNU) Cagle (1755 NC - 1820 Buncombe County, NC). They were married abt. 1772 in North Carolina.

Jacob Cagle, Sr. and Sarah (MNU) Cagle had seven children together by their marriage:

(1) Jacob Cagle, Jr. (1773 NC - 1852 TN), he married Mary Bird.

(2) Charles Cagle (11 Feb 1780 NC - 04 Nov 1843), he married Susannah C. Cagle.

(3) Elizabeth Cagle (Born 1788 in North Carolina).

(4) Sarah Cagle (1790 Moore Co., NC

- Dec 1850 Marshall Co., AL), she married Robert Lewis.

(5) Henry Pinkney Cagle (1793 NC - Nov 1843 TN)

(6) John David Cagle (09 Apr 1800 NC - 03 Feb 1863 TN), he married Mary Carter.

(7) William Cagle (03 Feb 1803 NC - 07 July 1876 Oregon), he married first to Milley Dees; he married second to Hannah Garner.

Jacob Cagle, Sr. (01 Apr 1755 NC - 14 Aug 1845 TN) married second to Sarah "Sally" (MNU) in 1821 in Warren County, Tennessee...this is if the widows pension app. that a Sarah Cagle, wife of a Jacob Cagle, is for the Jacob Cagle, Sr. that this memorial was created for. They did not have any children by their marriage.

Jacob Cagle, Sr. (01 Apr 1755 NC - 14 Aug 1845 TN) married third to Lucy Derrah on May 01, 1826 in Davidson County, Tennessee. [NOTE: SEE COPY OF THIS MARRIAGE RECORD IN PHOTO SECTION]. They did not have any children by their marriage.

************************************************************

There has been so much confusion on the wives' names, surnames, the marriages and the marriage order of the wives of Jacob Cagle, Sr. (01 Apr 1755 NC - 14 Aug 1845 TN) ( due to the fact of a number of other family members named Jacob Cagle having records which only show them as Jacob Cagle.

Some confuse Jacob Cagle, Sr. (1755-1845) with Jacob Elias Cagle (May 16, 1811 TN - May 22, 1881 TX), who was the son of Jacob Cagle (1770 Moore Co., NC - 26 June 1838 Missouri) and his 1st wife, Catherine (MNU) Cagle.

Some confuse Jacob Cagle, Sr. (1755-1845) with Jacob Cagle (1770 Moore Co., NC - 26 June 1838 MO), who married second to Lucy Darrough / Darrow in 1826 in Missouri. This Lucy Darrough/ Darrow is not the same person as Lucy Derrah who married Jacob Cagle (01 Apr. 1755 NC - 14 Aug 1845 TN), with marriage record proving date of marriage on May 01, 1826 in Davidson County, TN.

There are also conflicting records added to the over all research of Jacob Cagle, Sr. (01 Apr 1755 NC - 14 Aug 1845 TN).

Some say he was married twice, first to Lucy Darrough/Darrow and that she was the mother of his children, but this is wrong. Jacob Cagle, Sr. (1755-1845) did not marry a Lucy Darrough or Lucy Darrow, but rather, he married a Lucy Derrah, on May 01, 1826 in Davidson Co., TN, which was long after the birth of all his children.

Lucy Darrough/Darrow married Jacob Cagle (1770 NC - 26 June 1838 MO).

Some say he was married second to Sarah "Sally" (MNU) Cagle, of whom is suppose to be the Sarah Cagle, widow of Jacob Cagle, who attempts to draw a pension, (R. 1581), in records of Revolutionary War soldiers, but she is turned down. In these records, she states that she was married to Jacob Cagle in 1821 in Bucomb County, North Carolina. She further states that he died August 14, 1845 and that she has remained his widow since. She states that she is 76 and presently lives in Warren County, Tennessee, on March 9, 1853. According to her statement, she was born in 1777.

Did Jacob Cagle, Sr. (01 Apr 1755 - 14 Aug 1845 TN) divorce Sarah "Sally" (MNU) Cagle before 1826 and then marry Lucy Derrah???? and then did Lucy (Derrah) Cagle died and he remarried Sarah "Sally" (MNU) Cagle, or did he divorce Lucy (Derrah) Cagle and remarry Sarah "Sally" (MNU) Cagle????

About Sarah "Sally" (MNU) Cagle: statements in (R. 1581): she was 76 years old and residing in Warren County, TN on March 09, 1853:

The only Sarah or Sally Cagle listed in the 1850 Warren Co., TN, Census is living in the household of Mary "Polly" (Rogers) Woodlee, her daughter from her 1st marriage to Levi Rogers.

1850 Census; Warren Co., TN:

Mary Woodlee-52-widow (widow of Jacob Woodlee, Sr.)
Harrison Woodlee-28
Enoch Woodlee-23
Elijah Woodlee-16
Geer Woodlee-19
Carroll Woodlee-11
Sally Cagle-73

[Note: Mary "Polly" (Rogers) Woodlee (29 March 1798 NC - 16 Apr 1878 TN) married Jacob Woodlee, Sr. (9 Nov 1789 VA - 15 Feb 1850 TN). They were married on June 27, 1816 in Warren Co., TN].

Will Book, page 357, shows Harrison Woodlee as executor of Sally Cagle and her property valued between $400. & $500.00. - Warren Co., TN - Will Book: 3; page: 359: June 30, 1857: ...settlement made with Harrison Woodlee, executor of Sally Cagle, dec'd. Property worth $400.-$500.00 will be paid over as the will directed to Polly Woodlee, the only legatee mentioned in said will.

Some say this Sarah "Sally" (MNU) Cagle was the wife of Jacob Cagle, son of John Dutchman Kegel/ Cagle, but that Jacob Cagle married Elizabeth Gilmore; and some say she was the wife of Jacob Cagle, Sr. (01 Apr 1755 NC - 14 Aug 1845 TN).

The earliest research reports on Jacob Cagle, Sr., who is now shown as Jacob Cagle, Sr. (01 Apr 1855 NC - 14 Aug 1845 TN) calculated that he was married twice and both women were known as Sarah, the second as Sarah "Sally", and that the maiden names of both were unknown. The first Sarah was the mother of his children.

Much later, the name Sarah Lucy unknown was added as his first wife, due to a reference to a Lucy Cagle wife of Jacob Cagle, that was found somewhere, (I do not know where it was discovered), possibly on a land deed, war record, or other record where a Lucy Cagle was the wife of a Jacob Cagle. But, this could have been one of the other Jacob Cagles.

As more documents became available to the public.... this Sarah Lucy (MNU) Cagle began to appear on some research papers as Lucy Darrough or Darrow, and was possibly based on the marriage record of Jacob Cagle (1770 Moore Co., NC - 26 June 1838 MO) to Lucy Darrough/Darrow.... and was at that time, by some researchers, believed to be the Lucy Cagle associated with Jacob Cagle, Sr. (01 Apr 1755 NC - 14 Aug 1845 TN).

I have seen many research papers used as sources on this Lucy, but no document sources to support evidence that Lucy Cagle, who was suppose to be a wife of Jacob Cagle, Sr. (01 Apr 1755 NC - 14 Aug 1845 TN), is in fact Lucy (Darrough) Cagle or Lucy (Darrow) Cagle.. or a marriage document proving a marriage for them in the 1700's.

Irene helped care for her nieces and nephews after their mother died. One time her brother, Issom, gave her two pigs for helping with his children. When Irene got home her mother, Belle Lewis, made her give one of the pigs to her sister, Katie. She cried because she had to give up one of her pigs. Irene went to Ironton and used the pig to buy her first brand new coat. (Stories told by Irene Lewis Williams in August 1992)

!LETTER
Sullivan, No. Jan. 10, 1992
Brian,
I as going to write you a little story I don't think you have ever heard.
We bought that house and lot at Annapolis in 1940, I think. The lot was 50 feet by 150 ft. Avery was carrying the mail at that time. And he didn't make very such money as he had to bid it down so low to get the mail route.
We paid $350.00 for the house and lot and paid a little over $17.00 a month until we got it paid for (seemed like a life time).
We lived there about 10 years then we moved to the Vulcan tower, then we moved to Sullivan.
We have been living in Sullivan 37 years. We moved here in July after Paul died in April 1955.
We sold the house and lot for $2000.00 cash and thought we were rich. Do you like stories like this? Jim does.
Love,
Aunt Myrtle

HENRY LEWIS' HOUSE BURNS
A report came to me Wednesday noon telling of the misfortune befalling the Lewis family. Some four years ago the house and furnishings of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis were consumed by fire. Only very recently Mr. Lewis built a new house and moved into it. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis had every reason to be proud of their new home when lo without warning it was reduced to ashes. The Lewis family could not afford to take this loss, and the spontaneous responsiveness of our community has indicated its unwillingness to permit them to bear the loss alone. The extent of assistance through funds goods, sympathy and from the multiplicity of sources indicate in no uncertain way that southern hospitality and neighborliness reigns in our community.
Sincerely,

!ANNIVERSARY
The Arcadia Valley Senior Citizens Recreation Building was the setting for the Sixty-Fifth Wedding Anniversary celebration of Henry and Macy Lewis, one of the resident couples of the housing apartments. Sunday, Nov. 9, was the date.
Mr. and Mrs. Lewis were one of the first couples to move into the apartments when they were finished in January, 1980.
The couple were very happy to have their friends and relatives in to help them celebrate the happy occasion.
They have seven children, 15 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Thirty-four descendants in all make Henry and Macy feel that they have a wonderful life together. All seven children are living. In fact all of the 34 descendants are living. There were two infants who died, one at birth and the other at 10 days.
Three of the sons retired from the military service. Until recently when the last son retired, there had been at least one of them in the service of his country continuously since 1940, before the second World War. Forty years of service to their countryis something the whole family has been extremely proud of, and of course, Henry and Macy are very proud that they had such a patriotic family.
Henry and Macy enjoy living at the Senior Citizens Housing Apartments and seem to have taken a new lease on life. Henry is 90 years young and Macy is 84. They enjoy being able to visit with the other residents of the apartments and they are relieved thatthey do not have all the hard work to do that they did when they lived on their farm in Annapolis, Mo.
Aldena Kimmell is the Lewis' oldest child. She and her husband, Robert, live in Arcadia. Neva Jackson is next to age to Aldena. She also lives in Arcadia. Aldena has two children, and Neva has one.
Delmar lives in Green Cove Springs, Fla. He is retired from the service. Frank lives at Annapolis and Willis in St. Louis. Mary Lou Conrad also lives in St. Louis, and Lawrence resides in Enterprise, Ala.
Lawrence and Delmar were not able to be here for the big celebration. They sent their love and wishes for many more years of happiness.
Delmar has two children, Frank has two, Willis has two, Mary Lou has three and Lawrence is the father of three.
Now, Henry and Macy, all of your descendants, relatives, friends and fellow residents wish you all the luck in the world and may you be around to celebrate another 65 years of wedded bliss. We hope to be around to help you celebrate it. Good luck and best wishes for the good life

!NEWSPAPER ARTICLES
The Mountain Echo is authorized this week to present the name of Issom Lewis of Annapolis as a candidate on the Democratic Ticket in the race for the Assessor of Iron County.
Mr. Lewis has lived most of his life in Iron County and was born and reared near Annapolis. He spent most of his life around there in timber work and faring.
His wife died many years ago and it was his job to rear his family of six children, which he did conscientiously and diligently. It may be said to his credit that his children have all attended high school and some of them gone on to college. They have grown to manhood and womanhood and are a credit to his and his teachings. One boy was killed in World War II.
Mr. Lewis is widely known and respected as a hardworking, soft spoken, honest man. He expects to carry his campaign to all parts of the county and wants to make many new friends in doing so. He says he is no fast talker but wants to meet everyone and present his case to the voters.
He is a man of good judgement and feels that he will be capable in the office of assessor if elected. He feels that it will be his duty to see every property owner and assess his property with his and do it fairly and justly.
He will appreciate the support and influence of the voters in the August primary election. (Newspaper clipping in possession of Linda Lewis on 6/21/1990)

Cocke County, Tennessee
Early Settlers of the Old 12th District

http://www.tngenweb.org/cocke/earlysettlers.htm

------------------------------------------------------------------------

The following is a list of early settlers who lived on the waters
of Cosby and Groundhog Creeks, creeks that are mostly in what was
the old 12th district of Cocke County. This list comes from land
entries on Tennessee State Library and Archives (TSLA) microfilm
#36. The label on the copy of the film I have says the land entries
are on the second item on the film; they are on the third item. It
also gives dates of April 1874 to June 1898. These may be the years
that the original book was copied or families brought the originals
to be re-recorded. The actual dates of the land entries are 1824 to
about 1831, making them some of the earliest surviving records of
Cocke County.

The original land entries were surveys and included drawings as well
as descriptions. The drawings were not copied into the new book. The
verbal descriptions often included reference to neighbors. And there
were always two names at the left bottom of the description. I
believe these were witnesses or attestors. I think they were also
neighbors.

I have abstracted the page numbers, landowner's names, dates they
made the entries, any reference to neighbors, and the attestors
names. Most of the landowners lived on the waters of Cosby Creek;
I specifically mention those that lived on Groundhog Creek.

PERRY SUTTON A CANDIDATE
Announces for Collector Race
This week the Mountain Echo is authorized to announce that Perry Sutton, of Annapolis, has entered the race for County Collector on the Democratic
ticket.
Mr. Sutton is not new in political circles, having been a successful candidate for the nomination a few years ago for the office of county treasurer
and going on to win the general election afterwards. He conducted the office in a very efficient and praiseworthy manner, winning many friends over the
county during his stay in office. He did not choose to run for re-election, entering the merchantile business in Annapolis where he remains at the present time.
Mr. Sutton is a devout Christian man, a strong civic worker, active in every worthwhile project, a man of high standing in his community. He served for many years on the Annapolis school board and, we believe, was elected again this year to serve after several years of voluntary relief. He was engaged in the operation of a general store for many years previous to his comng to Ironton for his about three years in his political office. He has been a life-long Deiocrat and a painstaking and loyal party worker. His many friends over the county will be glad to hear of his entering the race for the responsible office he now seeks.
He will appreciate the support and influence of the voters in all sections of the county and will take as extensive a campaign as possible, consistent
with his duties in which he is now engaged.

Dad pastored the Ironton Church of the Nazarene for five years. While he was there he built the church they have now. He held revivals and preached in many churches like, Redford, Des Ark, Annapolis, and a lot that I can't think of.

I have a very strong feeling that he preached the funeral of James Lewis. I remember his mentioning the names tell, Eli and Tony Lewis many ties, the rest of then I don't remember.

He had a brother named Ellis Lewis, who was also a minister. Ellis filled in at the Fredrick Town Church after he retired. Ellis and my dad were Ordained on the same day in Poplar Bluff Missouri in 1940.
