6749 | Unknown Findagrave contributor: Viola Lewis was born Viola Bennett, daughter of John W. Bennett and Emma S. Bennett (I believe the S. in Emma S. is her married name from a previous marriage "Skief" as the 1920 Census shows a step-son named Jim Skief living in the household, and further states that it is the second marriage for both parties). Viola has an older sister Mary E. Bennett. I do not know if she ever married, who to, etc. Viola also has a younger brother John Clarence Bennett born 12/31/1911 who is shown living with Viola and Leman in the 1930 Census. John Clarence, who also went by Wilney and W.C. "John" Bennett married Faye Albin Watson and begat Katy Sue Bennett, Rosalie Bennett, and Kenneth Doyle Bennett. I believe they are all deceased. I will attempt to add the findagrave link to W.C. "John" Bennett and Faye Albin Watson to this memorial. I do know Kenneth Doyle Bennett lived in Springfield, Sangamon County, Illinois at the time of his death on July 5, 2000 | Bennett, Viola (95974557)

6778 | Valentin Leonhardt (original spelling), one of the original pioneers of Davidson Co, NC. Born 10-13-1718 in Katzenbach Germany to Martin & Anna Barbara Leonhardt, arrived in Philadelphia on the ship "Neptune" on 25 Oct 1746. Married Elisabeth Wallacher and fathered several children before moving to what is now Davidson Co, NC. He settled on "a large tract of land between Abbott's Creek and one of its tributaries, since called Leonhardt's Creek." Six children were born here. The land was purchased from Lord Granville through an agent. Although a tailor by trade, Valentin became a farmer on a large scale. Although not a young man when the Revolutionary War broke out, he joined, as did all of his sons. Following the Guilford Court-house battle (Nathanael Greene's Regiment), he retired to his farm. Here he was shot by a band of Tories and died 11 days later on 13 Nov 1781. His neighbor, Wooldrich Fritz was also shot and killed on the same night by a band of Tories. They are buried in what was known as Leo His will was made 22 Aug 1779 and lists 8 children. The tall monument was erected 4 July 1896 for the 2 men who lost their lives so cruely after doing so much for their country and their community: The inscription on the East Side reads: "This monument was erected by citizens A.D. 1896 out of veneration for our brave dead. These men are of those who fought for and gained our liberty. Unveiled with appropriate ceremonies 4 Jul 1896." The West Side reads: "The heroes buried in this spot were cruelly assasinated in their own homes by Tories near the close of the Revolutionary War. They were Patriots and bravely fought for American independence." | Leonhardt, Johan Valentin (88756001)

6796 | Viola Lewis was born Viola Bennett, daughter of John W.
