- Ira W. Meyer, 86, of rural Montgomery City, Mo., died on Sunday, July 17, 2011, at the New Florence Care Center in New Florence, Mo.
Ira Washington Meyer was born March 22, 1925 in Bay, Mo. to William W. Meyer and Amanda K. Koch Meyer. He graduated from Owensville High School and was a Veteran of the United States Army. While serving in the Philippines he contracted polio and was in several hospitals overseas and in the United States. Ira married Marie Louise Witte on November 17, 1951 in Bay, Mo. They lived all their married lives in rural Montgomery City, Mo., where they worked hard and farmed. Marie preceded him in death on December 30, 2005. Ira was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 541 in Bay, Mo.; he attended the First United Methodist-Presbyterian Church in Montgomery City, Mo.; was a member of Farm Bureau; served on the Montgomery County R-II Board of Education for many years and was President for several terms. When Mr. Meyer was younger he sang in a barber shop quartet and also sang for many weddings and funerals. He enjoyed music, played the guitar, and was a very hard worker. Mr. Meyer was preceded in death by his parents; William W. and Amanda K. Meyer; his wife, Marie Louise Witte Meyer; grandson, Erich Mills; two brothers: Waldemer Meyer and wife, Margaret, and Omer Meyer; sister, Ada Goldbeck; and brother-in-law, Raymond Witte.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 20, 2011, at the Schlanker Funeral Home in Mont-gomery City, Mo. The Reverend Ed Hankinson will officiate and interment with Military Honors will be in the Sunrise Memorial Gardens, north of Montgomery City, Mo.
