Jacob Newton Lewis joined Company A, 9th Tennessee Cavalry, USA on 13 August 1863 at Nashville, TN as a sergeant. He was sick in the hospital on 29 February 1864. He died from scurvy 4 May 1864. His brother in-law Timothy Stringfield Hixson retrieved his personal effects on 29 April 1865.
He was born in Hamilton County and grew up on Walden's Ridge on the boarder of Marion County/Hamilton County, TN. He died unmarried at 22 years of age. He was the second child born to his parents John Henry Lewis and Elizabeth Wilcoxen.
