John and Emaline sold 5 acres of ground to the Methodist Episcopal Church South in a warranty deed dated 10-Sept-1870 and filed 8-Mar-1887. It was recorded in book 33-Pg-611 Iron County and $50 was paid for the land. It was in Section 28, Twp. 21 N Range 3 E and was a little North of where Little Carver Creek runs into Carver Creek. In the mid 1880's, the Lewis and McKenzie families built the church that would be known as Emily's Chapel sharing in the labor and cost of materials. Janet's dad's cousin Kathyrn (McKenzie) Vickery said her father helped to build the benches when he was 15 and he was born in 1871.

THE FAMILY OF ELI AND CHINA (CHITWOOD) LEWIS
Eli Lewis, second son of John and Emiline, was born in
1846 in Liberty Twp., Madison Co., Mo. He was listed as
6, 14, and 22 in the 1850-60 & 70 census records. He was
working on the farm at age 22. He was found in Logan Twp.,
Reynolds Co. 1880 census boarding with the Thomas Dickson
Family. Elizabeth Dickson, the wife, was the younger sister
of my great grandmother Helen Chitwood who married John
A. Dunn. John and Helen's son William was living next door
with his wife and daughter. Eli was listed as 33 and a farm
laborer. His younger brother Eliab was living in Lester-
ville Twp. with his wife and baby. Eli finally married 09-
Aug-1881 to China Chitwood, both of Webb's Creek, Reynolds
County, the groom swearing that China was over 18. China
was a double cousin to my Helen and her sister Elizabeth.
Their father William Chitwood married Cecelia Whitecotton,
and China's parents were Andrew Chitwood and Elizabeth
Whitecotton, so brothers married sisters. The name was changed
to Cotton with W. as a middle name, probably because it
sounded Indian. China's father Andrew had been murdered
at his door by bushwhackers in 1863 during the Civil War.
She was born 28-Feb-1858 in Ruble, Reynolds Co., Mo. She
and Eli lived on Webb Creek after their marriage and were
members of Bethlehem Baptist Church. When I ran queries
on Eli's family in the Reynolds County Courier and Genealogy
Society, I received many replies. One lady, a Chitwood des-
cendant, stated: "I remember Eli Lewis and his wife China-
they were highly regarded and known as Uncle Eli and Aunt
China. They had two children- Rev. Tony Lewis and a daughter
Rose who everyone called Rosey. She was married to Eli Mitchell
The family is buried at Bethlehem Cemetery (Except Tony)."
Eli was listed on a Personal Property Tax List of Reynolds
County for 1890, as was his brother Eliab. I have not seen
1900 census records on either of their families, but have
marriage and cemetery records and the information I received
from the queries. The daughter Rosa was born 26-Feb-1885
on Webbs Creek and married to Eli Mitchell, and they were
childless. Rosey died 04-June-1977 and Eli died in 1980.
They are buried in bethlehem Cemetery where her parents
are. The son Rev. Tony or Toney Rockwell Lewis was born
22-Sept-1890 on Webbs Creek. He married Nettie A. Allen
of Reynolds Co., the daughter of William W. and Louisa C.
(Ball) Allen. Nettie was born in 1895. They had 4 children:
1. Douglas, a minister who died Ca-1975 and his sons were
in Texas as of 1987. 2. C. Burnell, minister who lived in
Jefferson City, Mo. and has step-children (as of 1987).
3. Wanda, died age 16. 4. Jimmey Bob, died age 2.

Rev. Toney Lewis, son of Eli and China, had a long
and distinguished career as a Baptist minister and was well
known in Reynolds and Iron Counties. The information on
his children came from Alice Carter of Piedmont, Mo. who
grew up in the area and knew the family and Barbara Smith
of St. Louis, a fellow researcher on the Chitwood-Cotton-
Smith families. Rev. Toney Lewis was the one who conducted
the funeral services for Mary Lee Dunn, grand-daughter of
Eliab, who was Emiline (Dunn) Lewis' brother. Nettie A.
Lewis died 1971 and Rev. Toney died 27-Jan-1981 and both
are buried at Ellington City Cemetery, Ellington, Mo.
China (Chitwood) Lewis died 14-Sept-1924 at Ruble, Mo. age
66 yrs.6 mos. and 16 days. Besides her immediate family,
she was survived by one brother H.T. Chitwood, and two sis-
ters, Mrs. Sallie Wadlow and Aunt Laney Barnes. Her obit-
uary was printed in the Ellington Press 13-Nov-1924. Her
husband Eli Lewis died 1930 and they are buried at Beth-
lehem Cemetery, Reynolds Co., Mo.

Mary Jane Lewis, born March 1860, was married 06-Jan-
1884 to H.M. Allen, the son of Jasper Newton and Jane Allen.
He died before 1900 and may be buried at Emily's Chapel
as her parents are. There was one son, Perry P. Allen who
was in the 1900 census with his grandfather John, his mother
and Aunt Sarah. He was listed as 13, born in June, 1886.
According to what Mary Jane said there was another child
who died before 1900. Alma Hughes said her aunt Mary Jane
just had the one son Perry. Mary Jane did marry again be-
tween 1900 and 1906 when her father died; her second hus-
band was Jasper Kelley. They signed a quit claim deed along
with her brother Leroy and his wife Frances as heirs at
law of John Lewis, deceased to their brother J.N. Lewis
(Jasper). It was dated 3-Dec-1907 and recorded in Book 48-
pg-197- Iron Co. for $50.00. The land was the SE4 of the
NE1/4 of Section 29; also the South half of the NW4 and the
NA of the NA of Section 28, in Twp. 32 N, Range 3 East.
I did not find the Kelleys listed in the 1910 census and
that is all the information I have on their family.

Jasper Newton Lewis was born 27-April-1861 to John
and Emiline. He married 23-Dec-1888 to Lucinda E. Holloman.
Lucinda was born 22-Nov-1866 at Hogan, Mo., the daughter
of Thomas Edmund and Matilda (Bollinger) Holloman.

Allen Holloman, the county surveyer and later judge was Edmund's
father. In 1900 Jasper and Lucinda (Lucy) lived between
his parents and Henry McKenzie on Little Carver Creek, and
five of their eight children were born. I did not find their
family in 1910 and think they might have been living in
St. Louis by that time. The children of Jasper and Lucy:

Jasper Newton Lewis, born 1861, died five years after
his wife Lucy in St. Louis. He died on 26-July-1935 of
chronic myocarditis and also suffered from chronic bron-
chitis. He was under a doctor's care for four months before
he died. The information was given by his daughter Eunice
Lewis, who lived in St. Lewis at that time. Burial was on
July 28, 1935 and he was buried beside his wife at Emily's
Chapel Cemetery. Long after his death his other heirs signed
over to Wilfred and Mary Lewis their share of the Jasper
Newton Lewis land. Robert Dunn and Violet, his wife, signed
a warranty deed to Wilfred on 29-Nov-1958, recorded in Book
133-Pg-417-Iron Co. Records for their share of Jasper's
land to wit: SE 4 lying south of Carver Creek, part of SW
of NW 4 lying south of Little Creek; all of NW 4 of NW
4 except 5 acres on south side and 2 acres set aside for
church house, all in Section 28. Also SE 4 of NE 4 of Sec.
29, Twp 32 N of R 3 E, containing in the aggregate 109.49
acres. Consideration $1.00.

Eldora Alberta [Lewis] White was the daughter of Robert R & Mary Elizabeth [Covington] Lewis.

She married John Calvin White, on May 31, 1924, in Brownfield Terry County Texas.

They had two children:
Alma Joe White, died at birth, and Norval "Ted" L White.
Eldora, inherited 4 surviving children from John's first marriage, they remember Eldora, for the love and care she provided them all equally as children.
The 4 children were: Clifford, Leola, Thomas and Nora.

After John's death, Eldora, had to raise the family and provide for them, she took on an elected public service job as District Clerk, a position she held for 26 years.

She had the following siblings:
Clyde, Clarence, Dalton, Mrs JB Huckabee, Mrs George Warren, and Mrs U D Sawyer.

Her Parents Robert and Mary Lewis are also buried at this cemetery.

Death Ends Distinguished Career of Public Servant

The death here Monday of Mrs. Eldora White brought to an end her distinguished and unbroken career as clerk for 26 years of the 106th Judicial District.

Mrs. White died early Monday morning in her home of 415 East Hill. She was 68, and had been ill for several months.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon in First Baptist Church, eith Dr, Jones W. Weathers, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. James
E. Tidwell, pastor of First Methodist Church.

Burial was in Brownfield Cemetery by Brownfield Funeral Home.

Among her survivors are one son, Ted White of Odessa; four stepchildren; Clifford White of Tolison Ariz., T. W. White of Bostonia Calif., Mrs. Leola
Ward of Whittier Calif., and Mrs. Johnny Haynes of 231 South B, and three brothers, Clyde Lewis, Clarence Lewis and Dalton Lewis, all of Brownfield, three sisters, Mrs. J. B. Huckabee of 601 North First, Mrs. George Warren of Levelland, and Mrs. U. D. Sawyer of Crossroads, N. M. and 18 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Came here in 1910.

Pallbearers Tuesday were
Ike Bailey, H. M. Pyeat?, Herbert Chesahir?, Erwin Rambo?, Carl Stephenson and Bob Barnett.
Immediate relatives named her many friends as honorary
pallbearers.

In 1823, Mrs. White was married to Jay White. She had come to Terry County in 1910 with her family from Comanche County, her birth place.

The family farmed North West of Brownfield after arriving here in a covered wagon from Symter. Mrs. White worked as a young women in
Brownfield Merchant Company, Brownfield State Bank, the Old pony?, and in her brother's department store.

Dessie (Lewis) Sawyer was born in Rusk, Texas, and attended school in Brownfield.

She married Uyless Devoe Sawyer, and they moved to New Mexico in 1916. They founded the Crossroads Ranch near Tatum in 1924. He preceded her in death on December 22, 1966.

She was survived by two daughters, Fern Sawyer of Nogal, N.M. and Myrl Sawyer Good of Roswell.

Dessie Sawyer was inducted into the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame in 1981

Dessie was National Democratic Committeewoman and New Mexico's best known political figure for years, but she was first a rancher. She and her husband U.D. moved onto their ranch in 1928. With sheer determination and hard work, they paid off the mortage on the ranch while the country struggled through the Depression. Dessie's work in community activities and public affairs led her into the national political arena because, as Dessie put it, "that's where the fun is.

Wilfred Holloman, born Ca-1902, married Mary Bowling.
No children born to them. They were still living in 1982,
and Wilfred is the only one of the family to still live
in Missouri. When I talked to him in 1981, he still owned
some land on Little Carver that had belonged to his grand-
father and father. Mary had a twin sister Lucy who lived
in St. Louis. When Wilfred and Mary lived on Carver, she
taught for many years at the Carver Creek School, and my
Aunt Elsie cooked for the school and they were fast friends,
My aunt would go to visit the Lewises many times with her
daughter-in-law Mildred, who would go on to visit Kathryn
Vickery who lives in Ellington. Wilfred and Mary have lived
for years now in Annapolis, not too far from his old home.
Mary is very active in one of the local churches there and
was gone to a meeting when I visited there with my brother
Ron and his sons Jason and Jeremy, and our cousin Neale
Dunn, who took us there. We were asking Wilfred's advice
on who to see while tracing the family. It was a very hot
day and he was in back cutting the lawn with a hand mower.
Neale called him Fox, which was his nickname when he was
younger, and I guess he and my dad Jesse were about the
same age and used to pull some pranks at Halloween. They
were talking of turning out houses over, and someone had
dis-mantled a buggy and put it on the unsuspecting owner's
barn roof! I don't think that was Dad or Fox though. While
we were there, I was admiring Mary's collection of blue
and white china; she had many beautiful pieces of Flow Blue
and Canton Ware and other patterns, that Wilfred said she
had bought over 30 years ago when she used to attend yard
sales all over the area, and he said she probably hadn't
paid over 50'D apiece for them that long ago! Mary and her
sister Lucy are related to my friend Hilde Beaty, who grew
up in Madison Co., Mo. and Hilde told me a story how Mary
would go to St. Louis and solicit help for her poor students
who attended Carver School from all of Lucy's friends. Hilde
visited Mary and Fox about 4 or 5 years ago when she was
attending a Counts family reunion in Missouri.

A retired employee of Potash Company of America, he had lived here since 1942. He retired in 1961.

He was born in Comanche County, Tex., where he lived for a short time until moving to Brownfield, Tex. He served in the Army during World War I. He was a member of the American Legion in Brownfield.

Survivors include the widow, Nora, Carlsbad; two sons, Bill Huckabee, Waco, Tex., and Earl Brown, Nashville, Tenn.; one daughter, Charlene Williams, Nashville; four brothers, Curtis, Lewis and J.B., all of Brownfield, and O.D., Midland, Tex.; three sisters, Ethel Elcke and Hazel Bond, Brownfield, and Jewel Quinta, Mineral Wells, Tex.; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

HUCKABEE

Services for Lazelle Huckabee will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Fox and Lake Church of Christ with Fenter Northern and Dick Craig officiating.

Burial will be in Carlsbad Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Charles Blanton, Glenn Blanton, Roy Blanton, Bob Williams, Ed Winn and Albert Moss.

Leona Mae Hughes, born 1930, married 20-Oct-1950 to
Martin Lynn Allen at the Marble Creek United Church in Ar-
cadia, Mo. and the ceremony was performed by Lynn's half
brother, Rev. Raymond Milburn. Lynn was born 26-June-1921
on Marble Creek, Arcadia, Mo. Lynn and Leona have a trailer
court at Ironton where they live, and her parents sold their
5 room house and lived in a trailer there for a while. Alma
and Virgil have moved back to Denver where they live near
some of her children and grandchildren. Leona went with
her mother in the cold (to avoid snakes) and tramped through
the weeds to record all the graves at Emily's Chapel Cemetery
several years ago. Some of the stones had settled in the
ground and they had had to dig down to unearth them. I had
taken pictures at the cemetery, but didn't get a chance
to record it, so was very happy to receive a copy from Alma
as she knew all the family connections and many of the un-
marked graves, which were not in the Cemetery Book of Iron
County that I have. Lynn and Leona have two children, 1.
Kenneth Dwayne, born 24-July-1957, and 2. Dorothy Marie,
born 14-Oct-1961, both at St. Marys of the Ozarks Hospital,
Ironton, Mo.
