Although an invalid,he was cheerful and entertaining in his conversation, energetic in business, and a good manager. He never belonged to any church, but before he died he told the writer that he believed that he had made peace with his God and is now asleep in Jesus awaiting the resurrection morning to receive a crown of life. I want to say to the bereaved family, 'Weep not as those that have no hope, for blessed are they that die trusting in the Lord.'

(age 58), were both born in Missouri. Malinda's mother was born in Missouri andher father was born in Kentucky. Marion's father was born in Tennessee and his mother was born in Kentucky. They lived in a rented home. Marion was a farmer. Marion and Malinda could both read and speak English. Marion could also write but Malinda couldn't.

IN MEMORY

One year ago after a long and serious illness, death came to our home and claimed one of the best of fathers, Marion Lewis, who died in his home April 14, 1926.

Although a year has passed, the memory of this dear one is fresh to us as if it had been only yesterday and we feel that he was too noble a citizen, too devoted a father, too true a husband, not to have a fitting obituary.

Our father, the subject of this writing, was born Sept. 17, 1858 in Iron County, No., of which he was a resident all his life, and died at the age of 67 years, 6 months and 28 days, being the eldest of 10 children of the late Uncle Billy and Aunt Abby Lewis.

He was united in marriage to Malinda J. Jackson March 13, 1881 and to this union were born 9 children, 4 of them dying in infancy. Those living are: Mrs. Lillie Chilton, Farmington, No.; Mrs. Allie Stevenson, Detroit, Mich.; Chas. Lewis of Annapolis; Mrs.Ruth Brever, Annapolis; Mrs. Ethel Ruble, Des Arc; besides he leaves a wife, 21 grandchildren and 5 greatgrandchildren, and friends without number that his clean and Christian life was accountable for. He professed faith in Christ at the age of 16 years and was baptised by Br o. Settles into the Missionary Baptist church at Annapolis, but later when this church disbanded, he, with his wife, joined the general Baptist Church of which he was a member for 26 years or until God saw fit to call his to his revard. He was always found at his post of duty whatever it demanded.

There was never any finding fault or dissatisfaction with him, always looking on the bright side of things. He was active in church and religious affairs as well as political, serving two terms as county judge in Iron county. His many friends will remember his as being generous, big hearted and kind, always having a word or jest for every one he met.

The funeral was conducted by Bro. Z.F. Yount and Bro. J. W. Alcorn at the Presbyterian church, it being the closest church. The six living brothers acted as pall bearers. Quite a large crowd attended the funeral, friends and relatives from several distantplaces. He was laid to rest by the side of his dead babies at the Lewis cemetery near Annapolis, a place we will always hold sacred to our hearts, for there we know lies one of the best friends we children and mother had on earth. Oh, what it means to give up father. One year ago we watched life slowly ebb out and it has been a year of heartaches and loneliness. Sometimes it sees only a dream that father is gone from us forever. Then there's the awakening, it is true but yet we know that we, too have thesame debt to pay and “it wont be long; it may be soon,”' and we will look to the hills from which our strength cometh and lean heavily on the arms of our burden bearer, for we feel assured that some day if we are as faithful as the one that taught us

May each of us five children be able to say if we, like father, were called out:

“We want to like everybody.”

May we, a broken family, look forward.

We are sorry to hear of the death of Mr. Ed. Lewis' father, John Lewis of Flat River. He was near 90 years of age. Several relatives attended the funeral Friday.

Emma Sutton was the daughter of Rebecca (Martin) and Nathan Sutton. She was first married to Sim Douglas and they had a daughter, Lucy Douglas. Lucy was born on June 13, 1903. She married Orda McLeod. Lucy died on November 3, 1977.

Emma Sutton Douglas then married John Lewis. They had two daughters, Gertie and Grace. Emma died of a stroke in January 1968. she is buried in the Parkview Cemetery in Farmington, Missouri.

AGED MAN KILLS SELF
BLACK RIVER MAN SHOOTS HIMSELF AND DIES

This community was shocked and grieved last Friday to hear that Robert Lee (known as Bob) Lewis of Black River, had shot himself that day. Outside of his being in bad health for some time no reason could be ascribed for the act.

He was born on January 26, 1867 and was 75 years old. He had lived around Annapolis all his life. On April 25, 1891, more than 52 years ago, he was married to Elma Maggie Sheldon. To this union was born 12 children, four dying in infancy and one, Edna, passing away at the age of 13. The seven, who with the wife, survive are: Mrs. Macey Slusher, of St. Louis; Mrs. Shirley Johnson, Annapolis; Mrs. Anna Miller and Freddie, the surviving son, both of St. Louis; Mrs. Clara Brown, of Annapolis; Mrs. Mary Trask,of Dexter; Mrs. Maxine Trask, of St. Louis.

Mr. Lewis was converted at an early age and joined the Presbyterian church. He lived a useful life, happy in his work and was loved by all who knew him.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Presbyterian church in Annapolis. The service was in the charge of Rev. Everett Lewis, formerly of Sabula, but now of Ironton, and was assisted by Rev. Paler and Rev. Curt. Burial was at the Lewis cemetery at Leadanna. ANNAPOLIS RESIDENT DIES OF
GUN--SHOT WOUND

Robert Lee Lewis, well known and highly regarded citizen of the south end of the county, was found dead a hundred yards or so from his farm hose last Friday from gun shot wounds, accidentally or self inflicted, no one seemingly certain which. At first word came here that he had shot himself, but this has since been discounted to a certain degree as no one can give any reasonable cause for such decision. It is said that he had gone, with his Winchester Rifle, to the rear of his hose where skunks had been catching chickens, supposedly to kill skunks, as he had done the previous few days. To get where the varmints were would necessitate climbing a fence where he was found after a shot was heard by members of the family, and they are more or less of the opinion that in attempting to cross the fence the gun was accidentally discharged, the bullet striking his in the chest. An ambulance was summoned immediately but Mr. Lewis expired before reaching the hospital.

Robert Lee Lewis, son of William and Abigail Lewis, was born near Annapolis, No., January 26, 1867, and departed this life July 2, 1943, being aged 75 years, 4 months and 24 days. A little more than fifty two years ago, on April 5, 1891, he was married toElsa Maggie Sheldon. To this union were born 12 children, four dying in infancy, and one, Edna, passing away at 13 years of age. The seven, who with the widow, survive, are: Mrs. Macey Slusher, St. Louis; Mrs. Shirley Johnson, Annapolis; Mrs. Anna Millerand Freddie, the one surviving son, St. Louis; Mrs. Clara Brown, Annapolis; Mrs. Mary Trask, Dexter; Mrs. Maxine Trask, St. Louis.

Also left to mourn his passing are 24 grandchildren, one great grandchild, two sisters, Mrs. Martha Keathley, Ironton; Mrs. Kate Robinson, Des Arc; five brothers, Jerome and J.M., Des Arc; Fred, Cape Girardeau; John, Flat River, and William of St. Louis.

Deceased was converted at an early age and became a member of the Presbyterian church. He lived a useful life, happy in his work, and was loved by all who knew him.

Funeral services were held from the Presbyterian church, Annapolis, Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. E.E. Lewis, of Ironton, assisted by Rev. Paler and Rev. Curt of Annapolis, with interment in the Lewis Cemetery, near there, in charge of N.R. White and Sons, Ironton.

The Register extends profound sympathy to the family in their sad bereavement.

!OBITUARY

Jerome B. Lewis one of our oldest citizens, passed away at his home here on Christmas day, about noon after a lingering illness. He had many friends here and in Iron County. He owned a nice farm near the Roberts community but when he grew older and his boys all left the farm to find employment in the city he moved to town and sold his farm now owned by R. D. Mann. He will be missed by his family and friends.

He leaves his widow and nine children who were all here to attend the funeral except Mrs. Ben Knight of Parkville, Missouri, who came after getting the news about her fathers death but received a telephone message after arriving here that her husband became ill and had entered a hospital. She and her children left at once to return to Parkville to be near him. We are glad to report he is improving.

Mr. Lewis' wife, the former Miss Zella Seal passed away some years ago. She was the mother of his children. In later years he was married to Miss Ailsey Blanton of Ironton. She has been a faithful wife to him and a mother to his children and tenderly nursed him during his illness.

Funeral services were held from the School Gym, Monday afternoon. A large crowd of friends and relatives attended. Rev. West, his former pastor, preached the funeral assisted by Rev. A. L. Gilliam, pastor of the Baptist church and R.I. Stamp offered a prayer.

Mr. Lewis was a good Christian man and a member of the Presbyterian church. The choir was composed of members from all the churches. Mr. and Mrs. Lyman Seal from Flat River sang a special number with Mrs. Hazel Hagerty at the piano.

The McSpadden Funeral Home of Van Buren had charge of the funeral. There were many beautiful floral sprays and wreaths and lovely baskets from his many friends and relatives. Burial was in the family lot here.

Among the relatives attending were Fred Lewis and family from Cape Girardeau, Billy Lewis and family from Flat River, brothers of Mr. Lewis, The Blanton families was from Ironton, The late Tyler Keathley family and their children, Miss Alta Lewis from Kenosha, Wis., Mr. and Mrs. Howard Lewis and family from Alton, Ill., Mr. and Mrs. Ross Nichols and son from Belleview,

Russell Lewis and wife and baby from St. Louis, Pfc. Carter Lewis from his camp in Washington, Mrs. Avis Jones and children from Ironton. One daughter, Mrs. Edgar Lovelace, husband and children had recently sailed for New Zealand and could not be here. Our deepest sympathy is extended to the widow and children.

Martha Eveline Keathley was born Nov. 25, 1874 in Annapolis, Missouri. She died June 5, 1955 at the age of 80 years, 6 months, and 10 days. She died in Arcadia Township, Iron County, Missouri. Martha's parents were William Lewis and Abagail Johnson. She was married to William Tyler Keathley. The informant was Walker Keathley of Ironton, Missouri. Martha (Lewis) Keathley was buried on June 8, 1955 in the Arcadia Valley Memorial Park Cemetery in Ironton, Missouri.

Martha Evaline Keathley (nee Lewis) was born near Annapolis, Missouri, November 25, 1874, and died June 5, 1955, aged 80 years, 6 months and 11 days.

She was united in Marriage to William Tyler Keathley on Feb. 19, 1892. He preceded her in death on June 18, 1953. To this union was born thirteen children. Eleven children survive. The children living are: Della Tesreau, St. Louis, Missouri; Walker Keathley, Ironton, Missouri; Lucille Fanali, Point Arena, Calif.; Nettie Helms, Hamburg, Michigan; Lester Keathley, Ironton, Missouri; Charles E. Keathley, San Gabriel, California; Clarence Keathley, Jefferson City, Missouri; Herschel Keathley, Anchorage, Alaska; Myrene Wallace, Bismarck, Missouri; Lorene Keathley, Ironton, Missouri; Marshall Keathley, Midland, Texas.

She also leaves twenty eight grandchildren and twenty five great grandchildren to honor her memory.

At the age of sixteen she was converted at a cottage prayer service in the house of Lee Jackson and baptized in Big Creek, near Annapolis, Missouri. For many years she has been a member of the First Baptist Church, here in Ironton.

During her entire life, she practiced Christian principals in her house and in her community. Her life was a testimony to the Writings in the Proverbs:

“She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat of the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her.”

Therefore, with the poet we can say:

Out of Earth

W.W. LEWIS

William Walter 'Billy' Lewis died at Bonne Terre Hospital, Feb. 6, being 87 years of age. He was born December 1, 1876, in Iron County, the son of the late William Lewis and Adie Gail (Johnson) Lewis. His wife, Mary Estell Lewis, preceded him in death.

He is survived by the following children, Emma, (Mrs. Clyde Davis) of Flat River; Audrey (Mrs. Finis Dalton) of Flat River; Golden Lewis of St. Louis; Ada Mae (Mrs. Lodus Hill) of St. Louis; Mary Leona (Mrs. Wayne Skaggs) of Compton, California; 11 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; a brother, Jim Lewis of Des Arc; and a number of nieces and nephews.

The body was in state at the Raymond Caldwell and Sons Funeral Chapel in Flat River until one o'clock Sunday. Funeral service was conducted at two o'clock at the Taylor Avenue Methodist Church in Flat River by the Rev. Harold Nance.

Burial was in St. Francois Memorial Park with arrangements under the direction of the Raymond Caldwell and Sons Funeral Home.

Our Community was very grieved last week when word came that Mrs. Kate Robinson had passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Opal Rayfield, in St. Louis. She had recently underwent a very serious operation at Bestheda Hospital. She seemed to improve and was brought to her daughter's hose but grew worse and her children were all called to her bedside except one daughter, Mrs. Rella Seal, who was not able to go. Our sympathy is extended to her and the other children in the loss of their good mother. Mrs. Robinson had lived here since the death of her husband some years ago and she was a faithful member of the church here. She will be greatly missed in the church as she was always present and enjoyed the service. Her funeral was held from the gym and a large crowd of sorrowing relatives and friends attended. Rev. P. A. Abernathy, her pastor, paid a beautiful tribute to her memory and spoke of her many kind deeds and her home was always open and a welcome to her pastor. Her children will miss her com

The World would be a better place to live if there were more Christian mothers like Mrs. Robinson. She has left a wonderful heritage to her children. She was laid to rest by the side of her husband and daughter.

FRED LEWIS, 77, CAPE BUSINESSMAN, DIES, BORN AT ANNAPOLIS

Fred Lewis, 77 years old, president of the Wimpy’s Drive In and Market, 800 North Kingshighvay, Cape Girardeau, died Tuesday night, July 22, at 6:10 at a hospital there where he had been admitted Saturday from the family home at 819 West Cape Rock Drive. Mr. Lewis had been in failing health three months.

Funeral services were conducted last Thursday afternoon at 2 at First Presbyterian Church Cape Girardeau, by the pastor. Rev. C.E. Mount. Interment was in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Pallbearers, all nephews, were Buford Lewis, Howard Lewis, Darwin Lewis,Russell Lewis, Elvis Lewis and Orville Lewis.

Surviving relatives are his wife, Mrs. Ethel Lewis; four sons, Frank, Francis, Freeman and Billie J. Lewis, all of Cape; two daughters, Mrs. Truman Howard and Mrs. E. Lawrence Bahn of Cape Girardeau and 11 grandchildren.
Two brothers surviving are J.M. Lewis of Des Arc and W.W. Lewis of Flat River.
Born January 16, 1881, at Annapolis, he Married Miss Ethel Miller on May 27, 1916. Mr. Lewis engaged in farming until they moved to Cape Girardeau in 1938 from Des Arc. In 1943, he and two of the sons, Freeman and Billie opened the present place of business. The son, Frank, joined the firm in 1948.
Mr. Lewis was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Cape Girardeau.

Mr. Lewis was born and reared on a farm near Des Arc and had many friends here. His funeral was held from the Presbyterian Church at Cape Girardeau where he was an active member. He leaves his widow, Mrs. Ethel Lewis and a number of children and grandchildren. We sympathize with the bereaved ones.

My mother’s father, my grandpa, Fred Lewis was born at Annapolis, Missouri on January 16, 1881 to William Lewis and Abigail Johnson the 12th of 13 children. Grandpa Fred was a thin, wiry, not strong man. He was very friendly and well liked by all who met him. He was the exact opposite of grandma. Grandpa loved to interact with people. He was always telling jokes. I’m still amazed at how he remembered all his jokes. I don’t have the ability to remember even one joke from one day to the next.

Grandpa Fred grew up on a farm and later owned his own farm. He got married when he was 35 years old. Grandma and grandpa Lewis had four boys and two girls. They raised their children in a two level, eight room farm house, with four rooms on each level. Mother told me the story of some of the children sleeping in the attic. In the winter time she said she would wake up sometimes with a sprinkling of snow on her covers. The kids helped their parents with the farm tasks from an early age. My mother tells the story of washing a drying dishes when she was so young that she had to stand on a stool to reach the sink. They stayed on the farm as long as they could, but when the children became young adults the burden became to much for grandma and grandpa and they sold the farm and moved to town.

My best memories of my grandpa Fred happened in and around Wimpy’s. My mother worked there in 1950 and 1951 when dad was recovering from tuberculosis. At other times, she often helped out when they were real busy. So as a youngster, I often found my self at Wimpy’s. I gravitated to the food market side of the building where I could find my grandpa. No matter the situation, he was always glad to see me. I know being the first grandchild worked in my favor here. Grandpa would ask me if I wanted to help him and for some reason I was always ready for the task he gave me. Many times we just worked together on whatever he was involved with at the time and he would teach me how to do whatever it was we were doing. They did not have an electric vacuum cleaner, so we were always sweeping the wooden floors in the grocery aisles.

in the basement underneath the restaurant were stacks and stacks of wooden crates filled with different brands of soda. Grandpa had a wooden slide that we used to slide the full soda crates down the stairs into the basement then we carried them to the appropriate stack. I was strong enough to carry the crates of empty bottles, but grandpa had to carry the ones with the full bottles. In the early days Wimpy’s sold cold bottles of soda. I don’t remember the year they switched to fountain drinks. But they had fountain drinks when I started high school in 1957.

I loved to watch grandpa make the hamburgers sold in the restaurant. There was a meat locker full of sides of beef that was located in the butcher shop by the meat counter. We would go inside the locker and get a slab of beef and he would grind it up into ground beef. Then he mixed it with the special ingredients that made the Wimpy burger unique, form it into a long 12 inch or so slab, then put it into the meat slicer and slice the slab into patties with a piece of wax paper inserted between each patty. Oh the memories, this was a special time for me. The family still makes the Wimpy’s hamburgers for family get-to-gathers and special events.

Grandpa was my favorite grandparent. He always wanted to know what was going on in my life. He was the most compassionate of all my grandparents. Every time he saw me he wanted to know how I was doing in school. I don’t know how much education he had received growing up, but my education was real important to him. I would show him my report card and he would give me a quarter for every excellent grade I received. I did like a lot getting the money, but that wasn’t my source of motivation. I just liked school and learning.
As I got older and my other cousins started showing up, grandpa Fred and I spent less time together. But those early childhood years with him were very special to me. I’ll always remember him for his love and kindness to me.

J.M. LEWIS EX-IRON COUNTY ASSESSOR DIES

Funeral service was conducted at the Des Arc Missionary Baptist Church Saturday, Nov. 14, at 11 a.m. for one of Iron County's native sons, J. M. Lewis, who departed this life Nov. 12, having attained the age of fourscore and seven years.

The Rev. Gerald Collier and Rev. Elmo Parker were the officiating ministers, with the Rev. and Mrs. Clarence J. Casteel Jr., bringing message in song.

Burial was in the Mountain View Cemetery, Des Arc, under direction of the Gish-Bowles Funeral Home of Piedmont.

Pallbearers were Russell Lewis, Everett Seals, Buford Lewis, Frank Lewis, Francis Lewis, and Louis Seals.

Having spent the years of his useful life in Iron County, Mr. Lewis was a retired farmer and served twelve years as Iron County assessor.

James Monroe Lewis, son of William and Abigail Lewis, was born in Des Arc, Mo., on June 24, 1883 and died at the Clark's Mountain Home in Piedmont, Mo., on Nov. 12, 1970 at the age of 87 years, 4 months and 10 days.

He is survived by his wife, Myrtle M. Lewis of Des Arc, MO., two sons, Orville Lewis of Texas City, Tex., Darwin Lewis of St. Louis, Mo., two daughters, Yvonne Elrod of Piedmont, Mo., and Naomi Zager of Columbia, Mo.

He is survived by 12 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, other relatives and a host of friends.

Cancer Is Fatal To Prominent Man
One of south Iron County's best known and beloved characters died last Friday in the passing of Mr. Chas. Lewis. He had been a sufferer only a comparatively short time from a fatal cancer under his arm. About two months ago he went to the hospital and had the small growth removed. He was never able thereafter to be up very much and gradually grew weaker and the suffering worse as death approached.
Mr. Lewis was a member for about 30 years of the Baptist church at Annapolis and one of its most faithful servants and, as some said, 'pillars.' He was a board member of the newly organized cemetery association and a very interested worker for the short time he got to serve. He had not been an active farmer for the last two or three years because of not feeling so well, but had engaged in stock hauling and buying until rather recently.
Mr. Lewis was born on July 12, 1886 and died on January 21 at the age of 57 years, 6 months and 5 days. In 1907, he married Hattie Warncke to which union was born six children. One of these died in infancy. The wife and the remaining children survive. They are Mrs. Irma Mann, Aurlin and Jesslyn, of Annapolis, Otis and Jimmy of St. Louis. There are four grandsons besides a host of other relatives and many, many friends, who are saddened at his passing.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at the Union church at 2 p.m. Rev. Seal preached the sermon and Rev. Joe Alcorn assisted in the service. A group of singers from the community sang several hymns. Interment was in the Annapolis cemetery.

She was united in marriage to Ernest Brewer onSeptember 2, 1902 and to this union nine children were born: Ina Mann, Arlene and Freddy Ray of Annapolis, Lowell of Hematite, Lovell and Bobby, of Herculaneum, Marion Lee, of St. Louis, and Edwin and Verna who preceded her in death.
She leaves to mourn her departure, her husband and seven children as above named and four grandchildren, two of whom made their home with the grandparents. E.A. and Elizabeth Terrell; two sisters, Ethel Ruble, of Des Arc, and Ollie Stevenson of Detroit, and many other relatives and friends.
She was converted and joined the Baptist Church in her early womanhood. She was a faithful and devoted Christian and wife and mother to the end.
Funeral services were held at the Union Church in Annapolis Sunday afternoon with Rev. LaChance of the Nazarene Church in Charge. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery with White and Sons officiating.

The vacancy created by the death of Circuit and Recorder, R.C. Jones, has been filled, by appointment of the Governor. The appointee is Mrs. R.C. Jones, widow of the deceased officer. A delegation of Democrats from here was in Jefferson City on Monday to visit the state executive. On Tuesday Mrs. Jones received the appointment and was sworn in office on Wednesday.
Mrs. Jones states that she will spend part of each day in the office learn the duties and will, to the best of her ability, learn the duties and perform them. The office has had, for long years, very capable assistance with Miss Clara Schwab as deputy, who will continue under Mrs. Jones.

Funeral services for Avis Jones, age 81 of Ironton, MO were held Monday, May 16, at 11 a.m. from the First United Presbyterian Church of Ironton, with the Rev. Richard Neil officiating.

Interment was in the Mountain View Cemetery in Des Arc.

She passed away May 12 at the Arcadia Valley Hospital.

She was born August 27, 1906 in Des Arc, and was the daughter of the late Jerome B. Lewis and Zilla Seal. On May 26, 1925 she was united in marriage to Robert Coleman Jones, who preceded her in death on January 26, 1948.
She is survived by five children, Ruth McHenry of Ironton, Hilda Tims of Florissant, Mary Carol Harmon of Bensalem, Penn., James Jones of FallsChurch, VA, and Charles Stephen Jones of Ballwin; 2 daughters in law, Iola Jones and Kathern Jones; 4 brothers, Buford Lewis of Des Arc, Russell Lewis of Woodriver, Ill., Howard Lewis of Alton, Ill., and Carter Lewis of Platte City; 2 sisters, Inez Knight of Kansas City, NO and Vela Nichols of St. Louis; 12 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by 4 sons, Donald Lee, Ross Franklin, Robert L. and Jerry L. Jones; and 4 sisters, Alta Lindquist, Wanda Lovelace, Orpha Lewis and Hazel Lewis.
After her husband's death in 1948, she was appointed to fill the term of circuit clerk and recorder of deeds of Iron County, and held that position for over 25 years, retiring in 1974. Inez Mildred Knight died at Bishop Spencer Place on June 25, 2003. She was born on May 27, 1911 in Des Arc, MO. Funeral services will be Saturday, June 28, 2003, at 11 a.m. at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Stine & McClure Chapel. Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m.at the chapel. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery.

In 1941 while working at the Missouri State Health Department, Inez married Ben O. Knight. They resided in Platte County on a farm until 1966. After that time she lived in her home in Kansas City, MO until she entered Bishop Spencer Place. Among Mrs. Knight's many interests were Women's City Club, The Friends of Art of the Nelson Atkins Museum, The Children's Mercy Hospital Cardiac Auxiliary, The KC Museum Auxiliary, The University of Missouri Conservatory of Music, The Janet Boone Service Club, and St. Andrews Episcopal Church.

Inez Knight leaves two children, Sarah and Ben Knight Jr.; six grandchildren, Anastasia Oldham, Ben Knight III, Ashley Knight, Heather Baker, Quent Sutherland, Jay Sutherland; and two great-grandchildren. VAN BUREN, MISSOURI - Howard Seal Lewis, Sr., 97, of Van Buren, Missouri, departed this life January 12, 2016, in the Riverways Manor Nursing Home in Van Buren, Missouri.

Mr. Lewis was born June 9, 1918 in Des Arc, Missouri; to the late Jerome B. and Zilla (Seal) Lewis. He grew-up and attended school in Des Arc. After graduating from the Annapolis High School, he joined the United States Army Air Corp, his rank was, Tec. 5 Sergeant First Class, and proudly served his country during World War II. He and his wife Verna raised their family in Godfrey, Illinois where he was active in his community and volunteered at the Godfrey Fire Department. He was a member of the Twelfth Street Presbyterian Church, where he had served as Elder, helped maintain the grounds, and volunteered whenever needed. While living in Godfrey, he worked for Amoco Oil Company as process supervisor until his retirement in 1972. After retiring to Van Buren, he joined the United Methodist Church, where he participated in many church activities.

He loved to hunt quail and pheasant, and was a member of the Piasa Pointer and Setter Club in Godfrey. He raised a beautiful garden every year, loved nature and the outdoors. He was responsible and accountable, a man who took responsibility for his actions and never passed the buck. He was a sharp dresser and took pride in his appearance.

On September 13, 1942, he was united in marriage to Verna Jean Long in Atlantic City, New Jersey. She preceded him in death on February 5, 2015

In addition to his parents and wife, he was also preceded in death by one son, Randall Lewis; four sisters and three brothers, Avis Jones, Alta Lindquist, Inez Knight, Buford Lewis, Russell Lewis, Wana Lovelace, and Carter Lewis.

He is survived by one son, Howard Lewis, Jr., of Plainfield, Indiana; one daughter, Susan Mehan of Cordova , Tennessee ; six granddaughters, Megan Burris, Tracy Mikesell, Jeanne Waltman, Romy Maurer, Katie Simmons and Cori Egan; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Vela Nichols of St. Louis; daughter-in-law, Terri Lewis of Fort Wayne, Indiana; brother-in-law, Coleman McSpadden of Van Buren; sister-in-law, Macel Seal of Piedmont, and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends who mourn his passing.

Howard was a hardworking, much disciplined man with a good sense of honor, who had a kind heart and loved his family.

Visitation for the family and friends will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 16, 2016, in the United Methodist Church in Van Buren, with the funeral service beginning at 11 a.m. Rev. Jim Cooper will officiate. Burial will be in the Des Arc Cemetery at 2 p.m.

WILLARD WATSON
Willard Lee Watson, son of William A. Watson and Jetta L. Watson of Flat River, was born January 27, 1921. He attended the Junior College from September, 1939, to December, 1940. Being a member of the National Guard, he was called into active service before completing the first semester of his sophomore year in Junior College. He was first sent to Camp Robinson, Arkansas and later to California. During his training he never lost touch with the Junior College. Through the school paper and correspondence with friends and teachers he kept up with activities around the College. The same thing held true while he was serving as a machine gunner in the infantry during the Aleutian campaign.

Willard wanted to be a flyer. All during the hardships of warfare in the frozen North, he never gave up hope that some day he would become a pilot. He studied and worked constantly toward that end, and at last he got his chance. He was returned to the States for training in the air corps, and his first mission was to visit the Junior College and spread the good news among friends. Soon thereafter he was sent to California to begin his training. As usual he kept up his correspondence with friends around the College, sometimes dropping into the U. S. O. to make a recording instead of writing the conventional letter. During his period of' training, the biggest news he passed along was that on December 11, 1943, he married Wana L. Lewis of Des Arc.

After taking his preliminary flight training in California, Willard was sent to a field at Pecos, Texas, where he was graduated and received his commission as second lieutenant. Shortly thereafter, in the summer of 1944, he returned to the Junior College for a visit, quite proud of his wings and his bride, who accompanied him on the visit.

Not long after his visit here, Willard was sent overseas, and on September 28, 1944, he met death in an aircraft crash near Chartres, France.

WALKER KEATHLEY DIES OF HEART ATTACK ON JULY 13
William Walker Keathley was born to the late William Tyler Keathley and Martha Lewis Keathley on April 29, 1895, near Des Arc, Mo., He grew to manhood in that community. In 1911 his fmaily moved to Ironton, Mo., where he lived until his death on July 13, 1960.

He became a Christian at an early age and united with Ironton Baptist Church, where he was a member the remainder of his life.

On July 22, 1918, he was called to serve his country in World War I. He was in the 10th Infrantry Division at Camp Funston, Kansas. His company was under the command of General Leonard Wood.

In 1917, he was married to Lela Crowley. Three children were born to this union: Maurice who died at the age of twenty-one, Wilma Goggin, and Garnett Keathley.

He is survived by three grandchildren, Jimmy, Priscilla, and Barbara Goggin. They were his great source of joy and price to the last moments of his life.

In 1944, he was married to Jewell King, who was constant in her devotion to him and his family.

He is also survived by a host of friends and relatives. His brothers and sisters are:

Walker Keathley was a quiet, humble man whose good life enriched the lives of his family and friends. His memory will remain through the years.

On June 20, 1953, his father's life was honored in this place. The claims of the tribute then, applies equally to father and son. It was taken from the Book of Micah:

But to do justice, and to love kindnes,s
And to walk humbly with your God?

Lester Keathley, 86, of Ironton died Friday, Feb. 19, 1988, at The Baptist Home.
She was born Sept. 1, 1901, daughter of W.T. and Martha Evaline (Lewis) Keathley. She attended Ironton Public Schools and graduated in 1921. She received her AA Degree from Stephens College in 1921, her bachelor's degree from the University of Missouri in1928, and her aster's degree from the University of Missouri in 1931.
She began her career of teaching at the Cove School from 1921 to 1922.
She taught at the Ironton School from 1923 to 1924, Arcadia School from 1925 to 1927; Sikeston School from 1929 to 1930; and a Webster Groves school from 1930 to 1966.
She entered The Baptist Home March 13,1984, where she remained a resident until her death. She was a member of Ironton First Baptist Church.
Survivors include four brothers: Marshall Keathley, Denver, Colo., Elmer Keathley, Walnut Creek, Calif., Hershall Keathley, Ironton, and Clarence Keathley, Northbrook, Ill.; two sisters: Lorene Keathley, Ironton, and Myrene Wallace, Bismarck.

Services were held Monday, Feb.22, 1988, at 11 a.m. at the Ironton First Baptist Church, under the direction of White Funeral Home, Ironton. The Rev. Keith Huffman officiated. Jackie Huffman was organist, playing 'Blessed Assurance,"Rock of Ages,' and 'Sun of My Soul.' Soloist Carol McBurney sang, 'The Lord is My Shepherd.' Pallbearers were Tom Lorenz, Bill Russell, Charley Brooks, Ken Blanton, Jack Vickery and Mike Goodwin. Interment was in Arcadia Valley Memorial Park Cemetery, Ironton.

Lester was one of a kind!

She lived a full life with wide experience and a consuming interest in all phases of life. Being a member of a large family she was the "pivotal" point and a magnet to all.

She was very considerate of all her relatives. She kept in close contact with relatives and friends and maintained an historical record by the use of photographs. Brothers and sisters benefited through her financial and moral support. She also made it possible, through the acquisition of the Russellville home, for our parents to enjoy many happy years of retirement. The home became family headquarters for all--children, grandchildren, relatives and friends.

A dedicated, trained elementary school teacher for over forty years, she was justly proud of her profession.

We, the remaining members of the family could be proud if we could measure up to her zest for living.

Lester Keathley was born September 1, 1901, the sixth of thirteen children of William Tyler and Martha Evaline Lewis Keathley. She was named for her mother's friend, a woman named Lester.

After graduating from high school, Lester attended Stephens and College and University of Missouri to earn her teaching credentials. She taught at Bristol School in Webster Groves, Missouri during the week, and travelled home by train to take care of her parents and sister on the weekends.

Lester wrote a story about seeing Halley's Comet as the family rode their wagon to church on a Sunday morning in 1910. Since communication was limited, no one was aware the comet was coming, and it was a scary event for many people. But Lester remembers being unhappy that day because she had to wear her sister's black poplin coat!

Lester is remembered as an open-minded, compassionate person. Her niece Jean Gover credited Lester with helping her through the time of her parents' divorce. Lester always looked after Jean, no matter where she lived.

After their parents died, Lester and her sister Lorene moved to a house on Reynolds in Ironton. And in their later years they resided at the Baptist Home. She died in February of 1988.

A TRIBUTE TO MR. KEATHLEY
Ironton will miss the familiar red car driven by the white haired gentleman--named Clarence Keathley. Clarence has gone to live with his daughter, Caroline, and family in Northbrook, Illinois.
Since his retirement from his position as Welfare Training Supervisor for the Missouri Division of Welfare in Jefferson City, Clarence has spent his time finding, recording, and preserving the history and heritage of Iron County





FOURTH GENERATION

After the death of his wife, the former Anna Sutterfield, he turned his full attention to his consuming hobby.
He guided the Historical Society in the publishing of the book IRON COUNTY BROUGHT INTO FOCUS as a bicentennial project in 1976. By 1980 Clarence was president of the Society and they published the book READIN' RITIN’ AND 'RITHMETIC, A HISTORY OF SCHOOLSIN IRON COUNTY, MISSOURI 1840-1981. He was the author and compiler. In the same year he had a little book printed on his own called SALT AND PEPPER, a collection of old sayings.
In 1984 Clarence published two little books on his own: IRON COUNTY YEAR BY YEAR, and UNITED STATES POST OFFICES IN IRON COUNRY, MISSOURI THEN AND NOW. Each of these projects involved countless hours of research among old records, interviews with many people, countless letters, and many miles driven in his car. No effort was too much to make sure the information was there and correct.
In between and since then, Clarence has had several articles published in various magazines, including the OZARKS MOUNTAINEER and the MISSOURI HISTORICAL REVIEW. The latest will appear in the Fall Historical Review.
Mr. Keathley has donated many historical documents, the post office boxes from the old Annapolis Post Office, many artifacts and copies of his writings to the Historical Society.
The Keathley family has lived in Iron County for a long time. There was a large family and all have distinguished themselves in their work. Education has been a driving force for the whole family. Lester and Lorene

Herschel Fred Keathley was born at Brushy Creek Farm, Des Arc, Missouri. He was the tenth of thirteen children of William Tyler and Martha Evaline Lewis Keathley.

When Herschel was still a toddler, his father was given the opportunity to oversee the County Poor Farm outside of Ironton. The family loaded all their belongings onto wagons, and headed north, with Herschel sitting in his mother's lap the entire way.

Herschel and his brothers and sisters have documented their childhood years by writing down their wonderful stories. They were hard working, but also knew how to have fun and exhibited the Keathley sense of humor.

When Herschel was 22, he met Alice Jane Randolph. Alice Jane became pregnant, and the couple married in August of 1931. Daughter Georgia Gene (Jean) was born the following November.

Alice Jane and Herschel both had strong personalities, and this led to their divorce when Jean was about seven. Herschel moved to Lassen Park, California to work for his brother Elmer, and soon after had Alice Jane and Jean join him there. The couple was remarried in 1940 because Herschel was joining the Navy to fight in World War II. If something were to happen to him, the military benefits would go to Jean.

Not long after Herschel returned from the War, the couple divorced again. Herschel had met Peggy Stearns, and they were married in 1945. Herschel had always wanted to live in Alaska, and he moved his new wife to Spenard, where their three children (Sandy,Debi and Skip) were born. He owned a tourist lodge and worked in construction.

After raising their three children, Herschel and Peggy were divorced, and he returned to his childhood home of Ironton. There he lived out his days reconnecting with his remaining brothers and sisters and getting to know his granddaughter Judy, and great grandson JT.

Herschel died in August of 1990 of a heart attack. His daughter Jean reunited with her three half siblings to handle arrangements. The four had only met once in the late 1950's, but a casual observer would have thought they had known each other their entire lives.

In 1992, Jean and her husband John, Skip, Judy, and JT travelled to Bellingham, Washington, the home of sisters Sandy and Debi. The group took Herschel's ashes out on the water and scattered them over the Sound.

Myrene Wallace was born July 19, 1912 in Ironton to William Tyler and Martha Evaline Lewis Keathley. She was the eleventh of their thirteen children. On April 12, 1932,she married Bruce O. Wallace in St. Charles, and he preceded her in death.

She was a 1931 graduate of Ironton High School and attended nurse's training at Missouri Baptist Hospital in St. Louis. She was the administrator of Colonial Nursing Home in Bismarck from 1959-1973. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Bismarck until moving in 1991 to The Baptist Home in Ironton.

Bruce and Myrene had three daughters: Mary Lu, Elizabeth, and Helen; three sons: Bill, Jim, and David. She was preceded in death by an infant son, Bruce Wallace, Jr. She leaves 16 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Lorene Keathley was born in Ironton on February 15, 1914. She was one of 11 children born to Martha Lewis and William Tyler Keathley.
From 1930, when she was sixteen years old, Lorene has never missed Sunday School. That is perfect attendance for an absolutely amazing 77 years. Imagine---77 years without missing Bible study. When she was young she and her siblings walked two miles to church at First-Ironton every Sunday. Now she attends Bible Study at The Baptist Home-Arcadia Valley each week.
She entered The Home on March 12, 1984 with her older sister, Lester. Lester passed away in 1988.
Another sister, Myrene Wallace also spent her final days at The Baptist Home, as did her brother, Clarence.
Her sister, Lester, was a close personal friend of the co-founder of The Baptist Home, Mary Riggs. Much of the personal information we have about Mary Riggs during their time in the Ironton comes from Lester’s recollections. Those who have an interest can read more in The Story of The Baptist Home by Ira Ann Hawkins, available by writing The Home for a copy.
While he was a resident Lorene’s brother, Clarence, also recounted his recollections of the early days of The Home in a series of articles written in The Baptist Home newsletter.
Lorene chuckled when she recalled her own bit of history. It seems Dr. Riggs, who had one of the few cars in the Arcadia Valley in those days, forgot to set the brake. The car plunged down the hill and narrowly avoided one of the small lakes near the highway.
According to Lorene, she has “had eye problems all my life,” but “haven’t been sick very much.” She is absolutely sure that they had bigger snows when she was younger.
After spending the last 23 years at The Baptist Home, Miss Keathley is content with her surroundings. “I don’t know where I’d be without The Baptist Home. It’s good here,” she said. When asked what she liked about The Baptist Home, Lorene had a good answer. “ Everything,” she replied.

Emma Lorene Keathley, 93, died June 4, 2007, at the Baptist Home in Ironton, Mo.
She was born Feb. 15, 1914, in Ironton, Mo., daughter of the late William and Martha (Lewis) Keathley.
Ms. Keathley had lived at the Baptist Home since 1984, along with her sister, Lester. She enjoyed embroidering, reading and watching television. She was an avid Cardinal fan.
The funeral was held June 9 at the Baptist Home. Burial was in Arcadia Valley Memorial Park.
Arrangements were under the direction of White Funeral Home.

Marshall W. Keathley passed away January 29, 2005 at the age of 88 in Denver Colorado.

Mr. Keathley was born September 20 1916 growing up on a farm near Ironton, the youngest of thirteen children of William Tyler Keathley and Martha Evaline Lewis Keathley.

On October 15, 1943 he married Kathleen Stephens in Camp Walters, Texas. They were married 61 years when she passed away February 1, 2004.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Walter, Clarence, Elmer and Herschel, five sisters, Della Lucille, Nettie, Lester and Myrene.

He is survived by one sister, Lorene Keathley of Ironton, and many nieces and nephews.

He graduated from Ironton High School in 1935 and from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1942 with a degree in Geology.

He served in the U. S. Army from 1942 to 1946 with the rank of Captain, while serving in the reserves he was promoted to Major and honored with the Presidential Unit Citation Purple Heart, Bronze Stars and Combat Infantry Badge.

Mr. Keathley worked for Forest Oil Corporation from 1953 to 1981 in Texas and Colorado.

Mr. & Mrs Keathley were active members in the Midland Gem and Mineral Society in Texas.

GOLDEN LEWIS

Golden Lewis of St. Louis, passed away August 27, 1980 at St. Anthony's Hospital at the age of 65. He was born October 25, 1914 in Flat River to the late William Walter and Stella (Golden) Lewis.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth (White) Lewis of St. Louis; three sisters, Emma Davis of Rte. 2, Farmington, Audrey (Dalton) Ross of Flat River and Mary Leona Skaggs of Lynwood, California. Several nieces, nephews and other relatives survive.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Ada Mae Hill.

Services were Saturday, August 30 at 10 a.m. at Hoffmeister Chapel.

Masonic services were held Friday night.

Interment was in Sunset Hills Cemetery in St. Louis, under the direction of Hoffmeister - Colonial Mortuary of St. Louis.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Llano Cemetery at Amarillo with the Rev. Jerry Golden, pastor of First Baptist Church in Canadian, officiating. Arrangements are by Stickley-Hill Funeral Directors.

Mrs. Miller was born in Des Arc, Mo. She had lived in Amarillo from 1938 until 1989, when she moved to Canadian. She was a seamstress and a member of the First Baptist Church in Amarillo, and later joined the First Baptist Church in Canadian.

She married W.G. Miller in 1927 at Poplar Bluff, Mo. He died in 1979.

Survivors include a daughter, Betty Miller Hobdy of Canadian; a sister, Opal Rayfield of Piedmont, Mo.; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

The family suggests memorials be to a favorite charity.

The body will be available for viewing until 8 p.m. today and from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Friday.

Frank Lewis, who died Thursday at age 90, worked with his brothers for nearly 30 years at Wimpy's Drive-In, their restaurant/grocery store at 800 N. Kingshighway.
"My father was the most positive person you wanted to meet," said Lynette Williamson, one of Lewis' three children, who lives in St. Louis. "Everyone wanted to stay in touch with him. From the president at SEMO, to the person who would cut his grass, theyall knew him by his first name. They'd come in [the restaurant] and say, 'Where's Frank?'"
Wimpy's was the place to be in the 1950s and 1960s, according to Lewis' brother, Freeman, of Cape Girardeau. Freeman Lewis said people would drive to Wimpy's on a Saturday night, then down Broadway, then back to Wimpy's. He said his brother always liked to speak with all the customers.

Cape Girardeau was growing and the Lewises decided to sell the land of the family business when a bank was interested in buying the property in 1973. Bill Lewis moved Wimpy's to South Kingshighway, where the business switched to serving breakfast and lunch only, until he closed the doors for good in 1997.
After serving in the U.S. Navy, Frank Lewis started working at Wimpy's in 1947, five years after it opened.
Lewis had other hobbies, including square dancing with his wife, Irene, and fishing at "secret ponds" throughout Cape Girardeau County.
The funeral for Frank Lewis will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Chapel. Friends may call the funeral home from 4 to 8 p.m. today. Burial will be in Cape County Memorial Park.

Frank Miller Lewis, 90, of Cape Girardeau died April 19, 2007, at Missouri Veterans Home.
He was born in Des Arc, Mo., March 11, 1917, son of Fred and Ethel Miller Lewis.
Frank graduated from high school in Annapolis, Mo. In 1942 he graduated from the U.S. Naval Great Lakes Training Center. From there the Navy sent him to Washington, D.C., where he met his bride to be, Irene Wesa. They were married Feb. 1, 1944, in Ventura, Calif. Frank departed California Dec. 24, 1944, to serve on the island of Tinian in Micronesia.
After the war ended Frank and Irene lived for a while in Conneaut, Ohio, where their first daughter was born. In 1948 the family moved to Cape Girardeau to join the family business, Wimpy's, located at 800 North Kingshighway.
While working at Wimpy's Frank attended Southeast Missouri State University. Through the years this local businessman was president of the local Optimist Club, member of the American Legion, member of the Missouri Restaurant Association, and deacon and elder for many terms at Westminster Presbyterian Church.
He also found time to coach Little League and church basketball teams. His hobbies included square dancing, fishing and gardening.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Lynette Williamson of St. Louis, Kathleen Fishel of Gainesville, Fla.; a son, Duane Lewis of Southaven, Miss.; four grandchildren, Bryant Williamson of St. Louis, Alayna Nordstrom of West Kilbride, Scotland, Jenny Lane and Derrick Wesa Lewis of Southaven; three great-grandsons, Andrew and Cooper Lewis of Southaven, and Eric Nordstrom of West Kilbride. He is also survived by a brother Freeman Lewis of Cape Girardeau, and a sister, Frieda Howard of Cape Girardeau.
He was preceded by brothers, Francis and Bill Lewis, and a sister, Leta Bahn.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Grant Gillard officiating. Burial will be in Cape County Memorial Park with military rites provided by Missouri Honors Team.

To the best of Frank's memory, this is what he remembers about farm life
before and during the depression. Since he wrote it down, I think it is
too interesting not to send it out, even if it is too late for Erika.
Frank grew up on a farm that his father bought from one of his brothers
in 1922. The house was a large white house with 4 bedrooms upstairs,
with a balcony, which was located on top of the front porch. They had a
large barn and 5 other out buildings. Frank was 5 years old at that
time. The farm was 180 acres that was homesteaded, he thinks, by his
dad's father. His father bought a team of mules and a new wagon that was
built by his brother-in-law at a blacksmith shop in DesArc. They raised
their own corn and plenty of vegetables from the garden. They had peach,
plum, and apple trees. Picked wild black-berries and dew berries. His
dad purchased some white-faced heirford cattle to start a herd . They
farmed about 80 acres and 40 acres was in hay crops and the balance was
in timber. They raised wheat for flour and they also planted white corn
that had their cornmeal ground out of it. They raised sorghum cane and
made their own sorghum mollasses and sold some of it for a dollar a
gallon. They also tapped maple trees and made maple syrup, which they
sold.
All the farm land was fenced so all the hogs, cattle, sheep were out on
the range in the summer time. They did not keep these animals in the
fenced area in the summer time. The hogs stayed out all winter and got
hat in the fall on oat acorns. They also had about 50 white goats.
They lived in the hills the year around and in the summer, they would
come home for salt and dad would catch a young billy goat whichthey would
eat for their meat, which most people called it mutton. It really tasted
good after eating ham, bacon, and fresh pork all winter.
In 1928 , Dad bought a Model T Ford, and they did not have to travel to
church and into town in a wagon.
They hauled some logs to town for some cash money to buy groceries.
They always milked 15 to 30 cows, which were in the hills in the
summertime and wouldcome home in the evening to feed their calves. They
would separate the cream from the milk and store in the spring house, and
ship the cream from Des Arc to St. Louis, and use the money to buy
coffee, sugar, flour and things they needed.
The crash came in 1929 and they had fair crop and could feed the two
teams and the 80 head of cattle but they used all the feed that winter.
The local bank closed. In the spring of 1930, they planted corn and a
garden but it was so dry, nothing came up--no potatoes or vegetables
grew. They did carry water and raised some tomatoes. They had to sell
all the cattle to the government for $10 a head as they could not raise
any hay or other crops because of the weather being so hot and dry.
Life was hard in the winter of 1930 and 1931. Money was really scarce.
Mother did get a job in town distributing government food to people and
taught sewing to women so they could make their own clothes. He thinks
they bought feed in the winter to feed the 4 cows and the team from the
government on credit, which Frank thinlks they had to pay back later.
The team and the cows were turned out in the hills for pasture. They
would hunt up the mules so they could till the farm and plant their
crops. Did have a good crop the fall of 1931.
Not much about the depression but life was pretty bleak at that one
year when we lost the cattle, sheep and most of the hogs as they
didn'thave any feed for them.

CAPE GIRARDEAU — Funeral service for Francis F. Lewis, 1212 Sailer Circle, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church. Rev. Charles Grant will officiate, with burial in Memorial Park. Graveside rites will be by Louis K. Juden American Legion Post.

Friends may call at Ford and Sons Funeral Home from 4-8 p.m. Friday. Lewis, 69 years old, died Wednesday, June 1, 1988, at Southeast Missouri Hospital.

He was born Oct. 31, 1918, at Des Arc, son of Fred and Ethel Miller Lewis. He and the former Melva Rose Schrader were married Oct. 21, 1950, in Cape.

Lewis attended SEMO University three years before being mobilized with the National Guard in 1940. He served in the U.S. Air Force in World War II, flying transport planes from India to China. He received the Air Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross, and China War Memorial Medal.

He was discharged in 1946, but remained active in the Air Force Reserve until 1968.

Lewis began his career as a stockbroker in 1949. He was branch manager of Reinhold Gardner from 1958 until becoming manager of Shearson/American Express in January 1979, and was co-manager of A.G. Edwards from 1986 until retiring in March of this year.

Lewis helped organize the Greater Cape Girardeau Development Corp., and had served as vice president and director.

He had also been active in Jaycees, Boy Scouts, United Way, American Legion, Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Rotary Club. He was a former commander of Louis K. Juden American Legion Post, and a Paul Harris Fellow of the Rotary Club.

Lewis was a member of United Way Board of Directors 18 years. He served in various leadership capacities of the Boy Scouts, including district leadership training chairman and Shawnee District chairman. He served on the Board of Directors of Region 8 of Boy Scouts of America.

He was a member of Tower Club, past president of Kimbeland Country Club, past board member of Cape Country Club, member of SEMO Seniors Golf Association, and Hump Pilots Association.

Lewis received the Golden Deeds Award in 1984. He served on Southeast Hospital Board of Trustees 13 years, and was president of the board from 1969-71. He was chairman of the Long Range Planning Committee and Cancer Treatment Center Committee.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, served as a deacon and elder, and in other leadership positions.

Frieda Abigail Howard, 95, of Cape Girardeau passed away Friday, April 15, 2016, at the Lutheran Home.

She was born Dec. 29, 1920, in Des Arc, Missouri, to the late Fred and Ethel Lewis.

She was a 1939 graduate of Des Arc High School attended Southeast Missouri State University.
She and Truman John Howard were married April 14, 1943, at First Presbyterian Church in Cape Girardeau. He preceded her in death July 30, 1987.
Frieda taught school in Des Arc until her marriage. During World War II, she worked as "Rosie the riveter" at the Consolidated Aircraft Plant in San Diego. She and her husband owned and operated the Donut Drive In at 1617 Independence St. in Cape Girardeau for 28 years.
She was a 62-year member of Centenary United Methodist Church, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and past president of the 14th District. In 2011, she was recognized for her many years of volunteer work at the Missouri Veterans Home and was named volunteer of the year in 1998.
Frieda was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was an avid Cardinal baseball fan and enjoyed Redhawk basketball as a season ticketholder. She enjoyed quilting, cross-stitching, working word puzzles and reading. She was famous for her chicken and dumplings. She will be remembered for speaking her mind and for being gracious and kind to everyone she met.

Survivors include a son, Richard Lewis (DeAnne) Howard of Derby, Kansas; a daughter, Barbara Gail (Norris) Johnson of Cape Girardeau; four 'grandsons, Timothy (Colleen) Howard of Philadelphia, Keith (Sara) Johnson of Leesburg, Virginia, and Scott (Claire)Johnson and T o d d (Julie) Howard, both of San Diego; nine great-grandchildren ,Derek, Caroline, Julia and Zachary Johnson of Leesburg, Kayleigh, Ainsley and Rylee Howard of Philadelphia and Owen Johnson and Truman Howard of San Diego; a brother, Freeman (Alice) Lewis, and a sister-in-law, Florence Lewis, both of Cape Girardeau; a brother-in-law, Jerry (the late Shirla) Howard of Dexter, Missouri; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Frank (Irene), Francis (Melva Rose) and Bill Lewis; a sister, Leta Bahn (Larry); and a sister-in-law, Ferne (Vernon) Volkerding, all of Cape Girardeau.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home, and also one hour prior to the funeral.

The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with the Rev. David Conley officiating.

Burial will be at Cape County Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be given to Centenary United Methodist Church.

Marthal Leta Lewis Bahn died peacefully Monday, March 5, 2007, at Chateau Girardeau.
Born Jan. 2, 1925, in Des Arc, Mo., Leta was the fifth of six children born into the loving family of Fred and Ethel Lewis. Her siblings include Frank, Francis, Frieda, Freeman and Bill.
Leta and her extended family had lunch together every Saturday at Wimpy's Restaurant, which was owned by her brother, Bill, until it closed in 1997.
Leta attended Roberts Elementary School near Des Arc, until moving with her family to Cape Girardeau in 1938 and living in a house at 321 North North Henderson. She graduated from Central High School with the class of 1943. She also graduated from Southeast Missouri State University in 1947 with a B.S. degree in home economics. While at SEMO Leta became a member of Clio and was a cheerleader for the Indians.
Leta and Emil Lawrence "Larry" Bahn were married June 18, 1949, at First Presbyterian Church in Cape Girardeau. Their first date was spent canoeing through Larry's father's store, the Bahn Brothers Hardware Store on Main Street, during the flood of 1943. Her diary read, "That Bahn boy can call again!"
After graduation, Leta was first employed by Union Electric as a home economist, touting clean electric clothes dryers, and then as a district home economist for Frigidaire. She later taught home economics at Belleville High School while Larry finished his Ph.D. at Washington University.
Pioneering the roles of women in Cape Girardeau, Leta was elected as one of the first women elders in the Presbyterian Church. She went on to be moderator of the Southeast Missouri Presbytery and then moderator of the Eliza Parish Lovejoy New Reunited Church Presbytery.
She was a delegate to the 199th Presbyterian General Assembly in Biloxi, Miss., in 1987, a position her father also held 30 years before. One of her real joys was serving for eight years on the board of Montreat Conference Center in Montreat, N.C. In 1987Southeast Missouri State University awarded her with the "Outstanding Alumna" award from the Home Economics Department.
Leta's crowning achievement was taking Chateau Girardeau from being head of the Feasibility Study to chairman of the board of the Building Committee, completing the $6 million project months ahead of schedule and more than $100,000 under budget. It shouldbe noted that she demanded that this project use local architects and contractors instead of bringing them in from out of town. She continued as an active board member after the opening of this fine residential retirement facility.
She was also instrumental in establishing the Pensel Azalea Garden at Chateau.
After Larry died, she became an active manager of the family farm, learning about growing rice while encouraging others to eat more rice. Leta also served as a member of the chamber Agriculture Committee.
A loving mother and grandmother, she delighted in her three grandchildren and in taking them on nature walks on the family farm, Taylor Oaks. She would teach them about different birds, their calls and the various flora and fauna living there. Leta took great pleasure in watching her grandchildren participate in their various recitals and sports activities.
An avid tennis player, she and Larry built a tennis court for their 25th wedding anniversary. She remained an active player into her 70s and was always a force to be reckoned with at the net.
Leta was a wonderful cook and a gracious hostess to her many friends over the years. Leta loved gardening and spent many wonderful hours planting trees, azaleas and other flowering plants at her family home located north of town.
She loved life and took several trips to visit her son, William, in different far flung stations around the world. Her trips included exploring the Alaskan frontier, watching her son play polo in Manila, experiencing Japanese life, trekking into the mountains of Thailand on foot and elephant well into her 60s, and even braving the war-torn and heavily mined country of Cambodia to see the magnificent temples Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom. The last with great trepidation and lots of encouragement from her son stationed there with the U.N.
Leta is survived by two sons and their families of Cape Girardeau: Dr. Lawrence Taylor Bahn and wife Nancy Jo, and their three children, Caitlin Rebecca, Jackson Taylor and Carsen Eileen; and retired Air Force Maj. William Lewis Bahn and wife Dr. Janna Tuck. Also surviving are two brothers, Frank Lewis and wife Irene, and Freeman Lewis and wife Alice; a sister, Frieda Howard; and sister-in-law, Florence Lewis, all of Cape Girardeau; many nieces and nephews and their families. Many dear friends also survive her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, who died March 5, 1980; her parents; and two brothers, Francis and Bill Lewis.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Paul Kabo officiating. Burial will be in Lorimier Cemetery.
We are thankful for her life, her Christian example, the loving kindness she showed to others and her generosity of spirit.

Leta’s Eulogy
by her son William Bahn

Here I am Lord, what a description of Leta’s life. Full of joy, always there for family friends church and community. Truly an inspiration and role model for others.

She started life on a small farm in Iron county that grew mostly rocks.
I have heard the stories of using the spring as their refrigerator, bartering with farm products and trees because they did not have cash money. Riding to school on the old plow horse with Freeman and Bill and then turning the horse loose to find its wayhome. The family finally had to move to Cape in 1938 when Grampa’s health started to fail and he could not work the farm. Imagine coming to the big city with almost nothing and starting up a boarding house to make a living. Surely Leta got some of herorganizational skills and positive attitude to take on tough projects from her mother. Grandma Lewis’s vision to see what could be accomplished against overwhelming odds had to set the stage for Leta’s later accomplishments.

Newlyweds Judy and Art Jackson started housekeeping in that boarding house on N Henderson.

With the outbreak of World War II, her three older brothers joined the service. Frank to the navy shipping out to Tinian by Guam where they launched the Enola Gay, Francis to become an Army air corps pilot flying fuel over the Hump in the China Burma theater. He piloted a C-109, the tanker conversion of a B24. Freeman was a corporal in the signal corps on Guam. (He was on duty when they dropped the bomb on Hiroshima). Her sister Frieda married Truman Howard a marine who served in the pacific. (He claimed that as paymaster they protected him but that’s not how I remember the marines working.) Grandma and Grampa Lewis took over Wimpy’s restaurant from Freeman and Leta and Bill help run it after school and holidays. A Cape Girardeau Institution on the corner of Kingshighway and Cape Rock for years and know for its great “wimpy burgers” until it closed. Her brother Bill reopened on South Kingshighway and continued the tradition until 1997.

About my dad,
The story goes that Leta first went out with the very dapper Lawrence Bahn during the flood of 43 when he took her canoeing though the then flooded Bahn Brothers’ Hardware store. Her diary states that she went out with him again in March of 44 and that quote, that Lawrence can call again! She did not have quite as good of things to say about numerous other acquaintances. Her last entry in that short diary was of meeting up with friends including Larry for some swimming and dancing, somehow ending up bythe end of the night with two black eyes and stating in her diary that she thought it was over with Bahn. Luckily for me this was not the case as they got together a few years later, while she was working in St Louis for Frigidaire, getting married June18, 1949.


Before I was born she and my dad used to take the nieces and nephew out to the cabin at Taylor Oaks while my dad was building our house. They would roast hot dogs over a campfire and stay in the cabin with no running water. My early recollections were that we always had activities to do. I don’t think Winnie the poo’s house at two corners had anything on us. Stories were told that we would occasionally get away in the 20 acre wood and our dog tiger would find us and brings us back. On the rare occasion when Leta would get upset with her angelic children, Tiger was reputed to stand between us keeping her away, what a dog!

She always took and active role in our lives. When we moved to Bellville IL while father completed his PHD at Wash U, She found time to be President of the PTA and be a cub scout den mother all while teaching full time to help make ends meet. I still remember her making 20’ high banners of the Three Wise Man for the School Christmas program.

Leta loved to entertain, Carol Koepple once remarked that one day she had a luncheon party, went out and played three sets of tennis only to return and have a dinner party for 30. Now that’s some organization! She and my dad loved to play tennis and built themselves a tennis court for their 25th wedding anniversary. Intimidating at the net she was a force to be reckoned with into her seventies.

She set new standards for the role of women. She an Dorothy Penzel were the first two women elected to the board of Elders in this Presbyterian church. Leta went on to expand her role in the church becoming Moderator of the Southeast Missouri Presbyteryand then went on to be Moderator of the Newly formed Eliza Lovejoy Parish New Reunited Church Presbytery. She was a delegate to the 199th Presbyterian General Assembly in Biloxi MS in 1987. Later I remember her showing me an old panoramic black and white photo of her dad as a general assembly delegate over 30 years before.

She continued to step up to the plate working on the Agriculture Committee of the Chamber of Commerce, the fair board, Southeast Hospital Board of Directors, but her crowning achievement was taking Chateau Girardeau from the infancy of its Feasibility study to Chairmen of the Building Committee completing the six million dollar project months ahead of schedule and over $100,000 under budget. When Presbyterian housing our project consultants wanted to bring in big city architects and contractors she was adamant that we would use are local resources. She had such a rapport with the building trades that when the heavy equipment operators union went out on strike, the lone union man from that organization came to her and explained that he had to strike but he would picket at the side gate so as not to interrupt the construction. You won’t see that consideration very often.

The Chateau was the first of its kind in this community and has been a blessing to the residents and family that have used it. Col. Don Regenhart USAF was concerned about his mother moving into the facility so he called his sister Alice Lewis to ask her about this Chateau Girardeau Retirement community. She told him that it was build by her sister in law Leta Bahn and the discussion ended there. I have nothing but good things to say about the Chateau and the care that my mother received there.

A reluctant farmer after fathers death, she came to relish the term Lady Farmer. Taking an active role in the management of the farm she embarked on an improvement plan of leveling the fields in her Puxico farm bottoms so she could add rice to the plant rotation. The fact that this might have the side effect of improving the duck hunting had absolutely no influence on her sons complete approval of this project. When she visited me in foreign countries she would look at the local rice production and even visited the International Rice Institute in the Philippines. She would also send out rice gift packs at Christmas to encourage friends to eat more rice.

She loved her grandchildren. Babysitting them, taking them on nature walks especially down to the creek looking for crawfish and tadpoles. She showed them the flowers and trees along with recognizing different bird songs. In the kitchen the grandkids were often found covered with flower licking off the beaters and spatula after making a cake or cookies just like their father and uncle did years before. A competitive athlete herself, she loved going to all, their soccer, T-Ball, tennis and other sportsto cheer them on. Even after a lot of her memory was gone Nancy thought she got a smile when relating how Carsen had won a tennis match against one of her friend’s granddaughters.

I got her to travel around the world to visit me in many different Duty Stations. Alaska, the Philippines, Japan, Thailand, Cambodia, and even Valdosta GA. I think she liked the Philippines the best. Going to watch me to play polo at the Manila Polo club was fun, but the best was getting her a tennis pro to play with along with a couple of ball boys so they did not have to chase their missed shots. I think she thought she was at Wimbledon. Luckily she never figured out that the noise she heard at night in the compound was not the guards setting off firecrackers. It was with great trepidation and much encouragement from me that I got her to visit while I was on loan to the United Nations in Cambodia. We started out in Thailand with a trek into the hill country north of Chang Mai. The first day was a three and a half hour hike up to a hill tribe village to stay in bamboo huts. She started out saying she was tired after the first steep climb, but then noticed the beautiful Orchids in the trees

The stories of her life are many and can’t all be relayed here. I know we each have our own favorite. So as we celebrate her life and the outstanding role model she was, I hope you will remember all of those good times. And that when the time comes whenwe are faced with that sometimes unwanted opportunity, I hope we can follow her example and say---

Tribute to Martha Leta Lewis Bahn, by her niece, Lynn Lewis Williamson

Aunt Leta always created FUN activities for us nieces and nephews. My earliest memories are of staying in the cabin at Taylor Oaks while Uncle Larry was building the brick house. He cleared some brush, and built a big fire. We kids roasted hot dogs on saplings or very long skinny trees. Richard, Barbara, and I later got to spend the night in the brick house. We stamped egg cartons: Extra Large, Large, Medium, and Small. I couldn’t count past 10, but Richard could count to 100. We had to get the right count for each specific size of egg.
Twice I went down stairs as a child and found live animals in the basement. Once at Grandma Lewis’ house there were two turkeys alive in the basement with Uncle Larry. Aunt Leta held my hand on the stairs. I stopped half way, and would not go down any further because the turkeys were the same size as me. At Taylor Oaks one time, there were hundreds of baby chicks in the basement. I was a little braver with baby chicks.
When I was very young Aunt Leta took me to Academic Hall at SEMO to see the drama “The Little Match Girl.” Often she took me to SEMO concerts to hear Uncle Larry play his cello. Later when I was at SEMO myself she found me in the audience at The New Christy Minstrels Concert, and came over to say “Hello” to my friends and me.
When I was in Junior High, Barbara, Kathy, and I went ALONE by bus to Belleville to spend a week with the Bahns. Aunt Leta took us to Forest Park for a picnic, to the Jewel Box, to Grant’s Farm, and to the Municipal Opera. We went to the Muny Opera by
Bus. Aunt Leta could open a few cans and prepare an elegant meal. That week Barbara and I learned that chicken is done on the grill when the juice comes out clear.
Aunt Leta was the Perle Mesta of Cape Girardeau. She loved entertaining and hosting parties. She told me once, “Sometimes I set the table two weeks before the party.” I watched her and learned, and later thanks to Aunt Leta, I hosted my own big parties. However, mine were usually buffet style, not sit down dinners. As her niece, I served at a few dinner parties and helped wash dishes too.
In 1967 I was privileged to travel in Europe with the Bahn family for 6 weeks. We camped in Paris, and stayed in bed and breakfast houses in London and Edinburgh. In London we ate at Wimpy’s because of her brothers: Frank, Freeman, and Bill. We also went to the London Stock Exchange to make Uncle Francis pleased. We hiked in Scotland, and one woman told us excitedly, “I have never seen a Mother and daughter look so much alike!” Aunt Leta and I were both speechless, and did not tell the Scottish woman that we were aunt and niece; we did not want to embarrass the woman!
When I moved to St. Louis in 1968, Aunt Leta collected and gave me all sorts of things she knew I needed for my own apartment: dishes, blankets, an iron, and ironing board, and a cookbook. For our wedding December 19, 1970, she organized and carried out the reception in the basement of First Presbyterian Church, and she and Uncle Larry put together all the wreaths and Christmas decorations in the church. Uncle Larry and I took down all this greenery on Christmas Day; he climbed up a tall ladder.
She contributed a large amount of time to First Presbyterian Church and Châteaux. She was the first woman to give a sermon or speech at the annual Presbytery meeting. She then gave the same sermon on Sunday morning at First Church; I think she was the first woman ever in the pulpit on Sunday morning for a sermon. She broke ground in many ways. She was also the first woman to dive into Capaha Park’s new swimming pool. The photographer, Fronabarger, asked the three divers to dive again so he could get a better picture. They obliged, and their diving photos were in the Missourian the next day. Aunt Leta did a lovely swan dive.
Aunt Leta was an excellent role model for me, and had a great impact on my life.
I have greatly missed her wisdom these past 7 years. She can be very proud of her sons, and their wives, Taylor and Nancy, William and Janna, and her beloved grandchildren, Katelin, Jackson, and Carson. Her last request of me was at Phoenicia Restaurant in 2001 “I can’t remember those stories any more of what we did together; please tell them to my grandchildren for me.” Above you have read a few of those stories.

A hamburger maker who made history dies

Wimpy's was the last of Cape Girardeau's true burger joints, where carhops in the 1950s served cherry Cokes and cheeseburgers to rowdy teens who later in life would continue popping in to talk sports, swap jokes or just to see its affable white-aproned owner.
Bill Lewis, who was known for his easy rapport with his customers as much as his tasty "Wimpy Burgers," died on Tuesday. He was 76.
"He had a story for everybody," said Lewis' brother, Freeman. "He was a big sports fan, so he'd talk sports or tell jokes. He liked to talk to everybody. I guess you don't see that much anymore."
Wimpy's was a Cape Girardeau institution for 55 years, growing from hamburger stand to wildly popular teen hangout before tapering off to a smaller establishment that served its last burger in 1997.
The one constant was Bill Lewis.
Former customers said Wednesday that Wimpy's closing ended a nostalgic chapter in Cape Girardeau's history and that Lewis' death reminded them of how important Wimpy's had been to them.
When he was a young boy, Cape Girardeau barber Bill Sisco and his family went to Wimpy's several nights a week.
"It was just a fantastic place," said Sisco, who also was Lewis' barber for many years. "He was a real people person. And those burgers. Let's just put it this way: That recipe must have been a top U.S. government secret. There hasn't been a hamburger around here like that since Wimpy's closed."
Lewis' brother, Freeman, bought a hamburger stand called Wimpy's in 1942. Located on the northwest corner of Kingshighway and Cape Rock Drive, Wimpy's -- which took its name from the cartoon character Popeye's hamburger-loving friend -- sold its specialty for 7 cents apiece.
The Lewis' parents, Fred and Ethyl, ran the stand while Freeman and his brother, Frank, were fighting World War II. Soon after they returned, the business moved across the street to the corner now occupied by the Bank of America. Youngest brother Bill joined the business soon afterward.
Cape's 'American Graffiti'
It was while at this location that Wimpy's became a popular hang-out for the high-school crowd. One of those teenagers was Al Spradling III, now a 57-year-old lawyer and former Cape Girardeau mayor.
Through the 1950s and 1960s, Spradling said, it was the place to find Cape Girardeau's teenagers at lunch, after school or at night.
"It was huge," Spradling said. "In the '50s and '60s, it was like 'American Graffiti.' There were two places you could go -- either Pfister's or Wimpy's. It was the place to go."
Spradling said Lewis family would get angry at teens who would get out of their cars and loiter or when cars would peel out onto the highway. Eventually, police were hired to oversee the lot.
"We probably gave them more grief than they needed," Spradling said.
Cape Girardeau County Prosecuting Attorney Morley Swingle has vivid memories of Bill Lewis.
"He was always all decked out in white, cooking hamburgers, laughing with the customers," said Swingle, 49. "One side of the building was a restaurant and the other was a small grocery store. That's where I got my comic books. There was always a crowd there. But it was Bill that made it a fun place."
In 1973, the Lewises sold the land to a bank. Freeman and Frank got out of the business, and Bill moved the restaurant to South Kingshighway. He switched to serving breakfast and lunch only, and his clientele aged considerably.
Wimpy's then became home to the coffee shop crowd, where customers talked about the day's headlines or how Southeast Missouri State University's sports teams did.
"We went to Wimpy's more for the conversation than the food," said Jerry Schwab, 63. "Bill always had a good story or a good joke. Bill was a very, very fine guy. You'll never find a local restaurant that had the following that Wimpy's had."

Billie J. Lewis, 76, of Cape Girardeau died Tuesday, April 12, 2005, at Saint Francis Medical Center.

He was born Feb. 3, 1929, in Des Arc, Mo., son of Fred and Ethel Miller Lewis. He and Florence Felter were married May 9, 1964, in Cape Girardeau.

Lewis moved to Cape Girardeau in 1938 from Des Arc. He was involved with the family business, Wimpy's Restaurant on North Kingshighway, from 1942 to 1973. He then owned and operated the restaurant on South Kingshighway until retiring in 1997.

He was a 1946 graduate of Central High School and attended Southeast Missouri State University. He was a member of Hopeful Investment Club; booster clubs at Southeast, Central High School and Notre Dame Regional High School; served as treasurer of Southeast Booster Club 25 years, and was currently a member of its booster board.

Lewis was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Eagles, Elks, American Legion and Kimbeland Country Club. He was a past member of Jaycees and helped build the Jaycee Golf Course, and was a past member of the Exchange Club.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife; two sisters, Frieda Howard and Leta Bahn of Cape Girardeau; two brothers, Frank and Freeman Lewis of Cape Girardeau.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son and a brother.

When I asked the family for a description of the character of Bill
Lewis, the first item was about Bill's penchant for humor and funny
stories. Bill told jokes and could spin a good story. I would repeat
a joke or two now, but I am sure that you have heard them all before.
How many of you went to that restaurant - Wimpy's? The newspaper gave
front page coverage to "A hamburger maker who made history" and then
wrote about this famous Wimpy's. The article said, "Bill Lewis, who
was known for his easy rapport with his customers as much as his tasty
"Wimpy Burgers." Bill Lewis knew you all, swapped stories with you,
and knew the latest information about events or people. What a
significant skill and talent it is to be able to have an easy rapport
with folks, to meet friends at every turn, and to create a
conversation which ends with folks smiling, laughing and feeling so
very good. Did not Jesus of Nazareth possess some of these skills as
well?

The second item about Bill is his devotion to sports. Everybody knew that Bill Lewis loved and supported many sports activities. He was a member of the booster clubs at Southeast, Central High School and Notre Dame Regional High School; served as treasurer of Southeast Booster Club 25 years, and was currently a member of its booster board. Also Bill was a member of the Kimbeland Country Club and helped build the Jaycee Golf Course. I believe he also went to as many ball games as he could, and when he could not attend, he caught them on the radio or TV.

But sports did not occupy the totality of the time allotted to Bill
Lewis. He also involved himself in this community in these ways: Bill held active membership in the Eagles, Elks, American Legion and a past member of Jaycees. He was a member of Hopeful Investment Club, and was a past member of the Exchange Club. Billmoved to Cape Girardeau in 1938 from Des Arc and on December 24, 1944, he joined the First Presbyterian Church. I would be remiss if I did not mention that Bill Lewis served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. These activities are proof that this man was dedicated to be a part of this community in as many ways as possible.


I guess that you all know that Bill knew politeness. He never said
"Huh? Or Yup." He said, "Yes ma'am or No ma'am." He said "Thank
you." And he did not use the current young generation's reply to
Thank you - which is "No problem." Bill said, "You are Welcome."
Bill knew and used the correct responses because he knew manners.
This legacy of good manners is something for which we all could
strive. And these good manners might be related to Bill's
understanding of his humble relationship to his Lord and Savior.

And Bill Lewis knew family. This Lewis family is a strong one and one
that is so very close to each other. Blood is thicker than water and
family love is more powerful than any temporary disagreement. I have
been impressed with the Lewis family and I pray for their continued
impact and influence in this city and community.

Bill Lewis had a strong faith in his Savior, Jesus Christ. He has been
a member of the First Presbyterian Church for over 60 years. I only
remember Bill from my brief time here in Cape. But in the last couple
of years, I have seen Bill in church on a frequent basis. He came to
pray, to worship, and to acknowledge the faith in Jesus Christ. And
in these past few months of this Spring, Bill and I had an opportunity
to talk as he discovered long stays in the hospital. Yes, he told
jokes and stories, but he also got serious in response to the gravity
of his illness. He talked about his wish for no extensive treatment,
his position before the Lord God Almighty, and his faith. We prayed
together, and I became aware of a significant faith in Bill Lewis.

Yvonne Frances Elrod, 96, of Piedmont, MO, passed away Tuesday, April 11, 2023, at Clarks Mountain Nursing Home, Piedmont, MO. She was born in Des Arc, MO, June 23, 1926, to parents James and Myrtle (Fowler) Lewis.

Yvonne was a loving mother, grandmother, and friend. She married Kenneth Elrod May 20, 1944, and was blessed with two children. Yvonne was of the Baptist faith and attended Friendship Baptist Church of Piedmont. She was born and raised in Des Arc, a 1944 graduate of Des Arc High School and moved to Piedmont in 1957. She loved her garden and her flowers. Yvonne was a passionate and nurturing homemaker. She had a feisty spirit, she enjoyed cooking and serving her family. Her family was everything to her.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her loving husband of sixty-three years, brothers: Arvil and Darwin Lewis; sister: Naomi Zager.

Yvonne is survived by her children: Kenny Elrod and wife Sally of Piedmont, Debbie Griffin and husband Nolan Tritschler of Columbia; grandchildren: Kent Elrod, Keri Elrod, Matthew Griffin and companion Sara Williams-Brown, Molly Newville and husband Justin; great-grandchildren: Kaden Elrod, Kenton Elrod, Van Newville and Harper Newville. Yvonne will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Naomi Ruth Zager, 75, of Columbia was called home by God on Sunday, April 17, 2005, at Boone Hospital Center.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 20, at Memorial Funeral Home with Chaplain Mark Steffen officiating.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Naomi was born Dec. 14, 1929, in Des Arc to James and Myrtle Fowler Lewis. She graduated from Des Arc High School. After graduation, she left home and moved to St. Louis to work as a telephone operator. She met her husband, Vincent Zager, when he was home for only one week on military leave. They were married that week, on Dec. 26, 1947, in St. Louis before he returned to active military duty and were happily married for more than 57 years. They moved to Columbia to raise their family in 1960.

She was very active in many different groups and auxiliaries in Columbia through the years and loved to play bridge and work crossword puzzles. She was a "best friend" to everyone she met including her husband, daughters and their families.

Survivors include her husband, Vincent, of Columbia; three daughters, Karen Althage and husband Karl and Lori Benthall and husband Dean, all of Columbia, and Sharon Voorhis and husband Mark of Walkersville, Md.; a sister, Yvonne Elrod of Piedmont; 11 grandchildren, Stephanie Cook and fiancé Steve Isaacs, Kyle Cook and his girlfriend, Shawna Skaggs, Michael, Matthew, Andrew and Megan Voorhis, Katie and Kelsey Benthall, Erin Goldberg and Jeffrey and Jonathan Althage; a niece, Debbie Griffin; nephew Kenny Elrod; best friend Esther Steinhoff; and many other family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.

Jesslyn Jean Lewis of Ironton, Mo., passed away on May 30, 2020, at the age of 93 years, 2 months, 3 days. She was born March 27, 1927, in Annapolis, Mo., a daughter of the late Charles and Hattie (Warncke) Lewis.

She is survived by four nephews, and one niece. Preceding her in rest are three brothers; Aurlin Lewis, Olan “Jim” Lewis, Otis “Pete” Lewis, one sister Erma Mann.

Jesslyn was a high school graduate at Annapolis High School. She worked at the Annapolis Postal Office and retired as Post Master after many years of dedicated service. Janice Lewis Cook 1924 ~ 2009 Janice Lewis Cook, 85, mother of three (3) children: Suzanne Beck, Charles Huffaker and Rob Huffaker, passed away on Sunday morning, June 7, 2009 at Elks Meadow Assisted Living, in Oakley, Utah from complications of congestive heart failure.

Janice was born in Annapolis, Missouri on December 16, 1924 to Della Williams and James Edward Lewis of Annapolis, Missouri. She was one of 10 children, with one surviving sister, Ann Lewis Lucy.

Her husband of 35 years, Donald S. Cook, preceded her in death on June 16, 2002. She has 15 grandchildren, three of whom (Kimberly, Gabriel and KC), preceded her in death and has 15 great-grandchildren.

She was a member of the LDS Church and lived much of her life in Woodruff, Utah. She loved gardening and being in the out-of-doors and traveling with their fifth wheel. She was an excellent cook, and loved to serve all who visited her home. She had an excellent sense of style, a fun sense of humor and her independent spirit put her ahead of her times. She lived life with great enthusiasm and on her own terms. She was fond of saying this was a result of her Cherokee/Irish/Welsh heritage.

There will be a graveside service at the Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 3401 Highland Dr., Salt Lake City, UT 801-466-8687 on Thurs., June 11, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. Friends and family are invited to attend.

Born on January 31, 1931, at Annapolis, daughter of the late James Edwin and Della (Williams) Lewis. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her first husband, Ralph A. Lewis, Sr. in 1991; a grandson, Eric Clifton Lewis; a great-granddaughter, Zoey Layne Leahy; five brothers, Carl Lewis, John Lewis, Gene Lewis, Eddie Lewis and Bobby Lewis; and five sisters, infant, Edwina Lewis, Opal Burns, Jan Cook, Helen Moyer and Kathy Shelton.

Anne was a native of Annapolis and spent most of her adult life in the St. Louis area. In the 1980's she came back to spend retirement in the Ironton and Farmington area. In 2000 she married Paul Lucy whom she had known all of her life. She enjoyed home decorating as a hobby and also liked to travel. Her family was her passion and she enjoyed spending time with her beloved grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Paul; four sons, Ralph A. Lewis, Jr., Timothy L. Lewis, John F. "Jack" Leahy and wife, Kimberly, and Daniel P. Leahy; eight grandchildren; several great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

At Anne's request her remains were donated to medical science. No services are planned at this time.

Edwin Lewis, born January 29, 1943 in Anderson, died unexpectedly on Monday October 11, 2010 of a massive heart attack.
Edwin was a graduate of Anderson High School and earned his Bachelor Degree at Humboldt State University.
His business as CPA in Redding was very successful. After selling the company to his partner, Ed moved to Lake Tahoe where he lived until his death.
Edwin leaves behind his son Don E. Lewis and his wife Ursula Lewis. He also is survived by his brothers Ron and David and his sisters Gay Trimble, Bonnie Lonteen, Sharon Gay, Judy Heffley and Pam Lewis, Edwin was a warm hearted, caring husband, a good father and a wonderful brother to all his siblings. All his family will love him forever and he will never be forgotten.
A celebration of his life will be held November 20th, 2010 from 2-5 pm at the Postoffice Bar and Grill at the downtown Redding Mall.

Melba Eugenia Seabaugh, 85 of Cape Girardeau passed away Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2007, at her home.
She was born March 20, 1922, in Reynolds County, Mo., daughter of the late Alva G. and Shirley Lewis Johnson. She and Howard H. Seabaugh were married July 15, 1944. He survives.

Melba was a member of New McKendree United Methodist Church in Jackson. She enjoyed gardening, working at home and taking care of her family and pets.

Loving survivors include her husband, five sons and daughters-in-law, Jon (Kaye) Seabaugh and Ken (Barbara) Seabaugh of Kansas City, Mo., Bill (Martha) Seabaugh of Little Rock, Ark., Randy (Barbara) Seabaugh of Cape Girardeau, Tim (Sharon) Seabaugh of Barnhart, Mo.; six sisters, Alta Miller, Alsie Duke, Irene Frohock, Jean Kuntz, Rowena Jones, and Sherry Williams; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Dana Barner, and a brother, Ronald Johnson.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. to service Friday at McCombs Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, with Chaplain Eric Snyder officiating. Interment will follow in Cape County Memorial Park.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to Southeast Hospice or the American Heart Association.
