1880 census ...Liberty Township, Iron county, Missouri ... Enumerated by Leroy (?) on the 5th day of June 1880...Robert Lewis (age 53) was the head of the household. He was a farmer. His wife, Mary, keeps house. Mary (age 49) cannot read or write. Robert's parents were both born in Tennessee. Mary's father was born in Georgia and her mother was born in Pennsylvania. Robert and Mary were born in Tennesse. Their 8 children were born in Missouri. Their sons were: We. (age 22); Robertson (age 21); Joel (age 14); John (11) and R.L. (age 7). Their daughters were: M.E. (age 21); Matilda (12) and Lucy (8). None of the children were married. Robertson, M.E., Joel, Matilda, John and Lucy attended school. Matilda, Joel and M.E.'s occupations are 'at home'. Robertson'works on fare' and Me. is a 'laborer'. (NOTE: M.E. and Robertson are both listed as being 211

1900 census ...Liberty Township, Iron County, Missouri ...Robert Lewis (age 73) was born in February 1827. He and his wife, Mary, have been married for 49 years and had 16 children. Twelve of the children are still living. Mary (age 69) was born in June 1830. Mary, Robert and their parents were born in Tennessee. Their two daughters were born in Missouri. Mary E. (age 40) was born in April 1860. Lucy (age 28) was born in July 1871. A grandson, Samuel (age 18), also was in the hose. Samuel was born in March 1882 in Missouri. Robert owns his own farm mortgage free. Samuel is a fare laborer. Everyone in the hose can read, write and speak English except Mary, who cannot read or write.

Among the callers at the REGISTER office the past week was our venerable friend, 'Uncle Bobbie' Lewis of Sabula. Despite his advanced years, Mr. Lewis is still quite active and is enjoying fairly good health. May he reach the century mark. (IRON COUNTY REGISTER newspaper... !OBITUARY

Word was received in Ironton last Thursday morning of the death of 'Uncle Robby' Lewis, which occurred at his home, near Sabula, the night before at the age of 85 years. The death of Mr. Lewis marks the passing of another of the pioneers. Nearly sixty years ago he located in what is now Iron County and lived there until his death.

Eleven children, sixty grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren survive him. The total number of children and grandchildren is 132, but a number of these are dead. Surely, a retty large family. The remains were interred in the cemetery near Sabula Friday and a large concourse was present. A good man has gone. Peace to his ashes.

Robert Lewis was born February 9, 1827 in Marion Co. Tenn., and died March 3, 1912 being 85 years, 1 month, and 4 days old.

He was married to Mary Griffith July 30, 1851. He moved to Carrol Co.Ark., and in the fall of the same year moved to Iron Co. No.; then to Madison Co. about 1855 or 1856. Sixteen children were born to this union; eleven are now living. (1912) He had 60 grandchildren , 32 great grandchildren alive, and some dead. Total living and dead are 132.

His last years were spent in much suffering. We are taught that through suffering we are made perfect. His words to his grandson are our consolation: He was asked of the future and he said, 'My business here is finished, Tom, I'm waiting on the Lord; letting him use me. I am ready to go.'

Cheer up dear mother and children; all was done that you could do. Now let's be submissive to the will of Him that doeth all things well. 8y and by we will go too.

He was married to Elizabeth Brady July 20, 1879. To this union was born 6 children. He died at his home near Redford, Mo., Dec. 11, 1926, at the age of 71 years, 11 months, and 6 days. He leaves to mourn their loss a loving companion, two daughters, one son, eight grandchildren, three sisters, four brothers, and a host of other friends and relatives.

February 16, 1922...Des Arc items...Your correspondent was very sorry to hear of the death of Wm. "Skip" Lewis at his home at Piedmont, February 7th. He had many friends and acquaintances around Annapolis for he lived on Bear Branch many years. Eight or ten years ago he sold out to James Brown and went to Washington; from there to Colorado, Oklahoma and Arkansas, and landed in Piedmont about two years ago, where he has since been engaged in the dairy business. He was about sixty years of age and died quite suddenly from heart trouble. A widow, four sons and daughter mourn the loss of a kind husband and father.

Not a lot is known of Phoebe's life as she died so young and her daughters are not here to share her tale with us . I do however have a description of her to help place her in my minds eye, she had Brown hair ,that was very wavy and worn long past her hips , she had dark skin ,and was short and heavy set most of her life.
Sources for Phoebe are Information from Census records 1860 through 1900 for Iron County ,Missouri , family information from Virgil Clopp grandson of Phoebe and family records of the Lewis family.
In 1879 Iron County Missouri, John E. Buckner married Phoebe Lewis who was born in Sabula, Iron County, Missouri. Her parents Robert and Mary Griffith Lewis were from Tennessee . Phoebe's life was short and we find her only on one census as a child with her parents . She was married by the 1880 census and is no longer at home sadly she nor John show up on the 1880 census any place in the united states that I can find.
Phoebe Lewis and John Buckner had 7 children that we know of all girls namely; Ida Bell, Maude or Mody, Leatha, Lula, Minnie, Zora and Ila.
Phoebe it would seem died 16 August of 1899. From census records on John it seems he never re-married after Phoebe's death but raised the girls on his own on the land he farmed in Iron County Missouri, Liberty tsp.

We regret to announce the death of our friend and neighbor, Bro. Lee Lewis, who departed this life February 5, 1906, of pneumonia fever, aged 33 years and 9 months. He was the youngest son of Rob't and Polly Lewis of Carver Creek. Death has taken from hisparents the joy, pride and comfort of their declining lives; from his young wife a loving, devoted and tender husband, yet we have the full assurance that we can speak of him as one whose end was happy; whose death was but a little brook, across whose chilling waters Christ accompanied him and joined him to the shining and happy host on the other shore. How uncertain is life! He was converted about one month before his death. He was well known in this community and liked by all who knew him. He was a member of the M.W.A. in good standing. He leaves a wife and two children, aged parents, several brothers and sisters and a large number of relatives and friends to mourn his loss. His remains were laid to rest in Emmaus Chapel cemetery by the Order of the

Died, near Sabula at 5 o'clock P. M. Wednesday, December 26th, 1888, Sarah A., infant daughter of George and Lucretia Lewis, aged 1 year, 0 months and 17 days. Sad that so lovely a flower must so soon fade.

Our bright eyed darling is gone, the sweet pratling tongue now dumb in death, will greet us no more. How our aching hearts despair when we look upon its little form. So cold lying there; those little ice-cold fingers as in snowy grace they clasp the toy that did In life give it o much joy. Dear bereaved parents and friends, grieve not for Sallie, be patient. these severe afflictions are not from the ground.

They are of times celestial blessings. Sallie is not dead, the sweet voiced child we so much loved, but by guard lan angels led from temptation, safe from sin's polution. She lives whom we call dead May the aiilicted family find comfort in Him who hath declared that babes are heirs of heaven, and submit to the will of Him who does nothing wrong. For,

She shall sleep, but not forever,
There will be a glorious dawn;
We shall meet to part, no, never,
On the resurrection morn.

When we see a precious blossom

Died:
Tumpey E. Lewis, the subject of this sketch, was born Sept. 8, 1884, and died Jan. 19, 1922 at the age of 37 years, 4 months, and 11 days. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Lewis. Tump was converted and joined the Missionary Baptist Church when he was about 19 years old and lived a CMristian life until his death. He leaves a wife and 5 children to mourn his untimely death. Also a father and mother, many other relatives and a countless number of friends.

The writer had the privilege to be with his in his last illness and talked with his about his soul's welfare, and he left behind his a burning testimony that all was well and he was going to rest.

He was taken ill about 2 weeks before his death with pneumonia and typhoid fever. All that could be was done by loving friends and relatives to defeat death, but God called and Tump was forced to surrender. Tump was truly a good man, a loving husband, a dutiful son. The writer has known his for near 25 years and not once can we recall the time when he was not in a cheerful mood. He always had a kind word for everyone. I believe we are safe in saying that Tump had not an enemy in this community. To know his was to love his. The community has lost one of its best citizens. He will be missed by all of us, especially by his loved ones. A hose has been bereft of a good husband and father; no one will ever fill his place.

We sight write for hours of his kindly acts and good deeds, but the recording Angel has then all recorded and sometime when Jesus comes back to gather His jewels, Tump will come forth to a glorious resurrection. Also the mortal body of Tump will be resurrected, changed in a moment, a twinkling of an eye and will come forth a glorious body. I Corinthians:15:51-54

Funeral services were conducted by the writer in the Baptist church at Redford, after which the body was laid to rest in the Redford Cemetery. Those who are bereft, we would say, 'weep not as those who have no hope. Fight on, Jesus is soon coming, and when He comes all the redeemed saints who have passed on before will come with His. I Thes. 4:14 This takes in Tump. Let us take comfort from the fact that he suffers no sore, but has passed on to his reward.

Dad pastored the Ironton Church of the Nazarene for five years. While he was there he built the church they have now. He held revivals and preached in many churches like, Redford, Des Ark, Annapolis, and a lot that I can't think of.

I have a very strong feeling that he preached the funeral of James Lewis. I remember his mentioning the names tell, Eli and Tony Lewis many ties, the rest of then I don't remember.

He had a brother named Ellis Lewis, who was also a minister. Ellis filled in at the Fredrick Town Church after he retired. Ellis and my dad were Ordained on the same day in Poplar Bluff Missouri in 1940.

George Raymond Ketcherside, of Farmington was born July 27, 1930 in Flat River and passed away December 8, 1980 at Mineral Area Hospital.

He is the son of the late Winford and his mother, Fern Parkin Ketcherside of Farmington, who survives. He is also survived by one brother, Paul H. Ketcherside, of Farmington.

Funeral services were conducted Dec. 11, 1980 at 2 p.m. at the Cozean Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Jerry Cowen officiating. Interment was in Parkwiew Cemetery under direction of Cozean Funeral Home.

Lorene (Lewis) Ruble, 91, of Annapolis, Mo., died at Clarks Mountain Nursing Home on Jan. 20, 2013. She was born Oct. 12, 1921, in Redford, Mo., to Carrie (Harrison) Lewis and Tump Lewis.

On May 18, 1938, she married Melvin Beryl Dutch Ruble, and to this union, three children were born, Linvell Dean (Laurel), Loren Wayne (Joyce), and Leland Cotton Ruble. The Rubles made their home in Vulcan, Mo. Lorene moved from Vulcan to St. Louis in 1959, where she worked for the National Hat Co. She later changed careers, and worked the remainder of her career in the Bargain Basement of Sears on Kingshighway in St. Louis. She loved to work outside in her gardens at her home in Annapolis. She loved to be with her children and grandchildren, asking them, "Have you ate yet?" every time she greeted them. She enjoyed watching her programs, working puzzles, and making her grandchildren quilts. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three sons, Linvell Dean, Loren Wayne and Leland Cotton Ruble; two brothers, Oliver Lewis and Lee Lewis; and two sisters, Nora Hill and Ida Reed.

Lorene is survived by six grandchildren, Charles (Debby) Ruble of Arnold, Tony (Sheila) Ruble of Vulcan, Mark (Lisa) Ruble of Manhattan, Ill., Milton (Rebecca) Ruble of Leavenworth, Kan., Krista (Steven) Ross of Methuen, Mass., and Rita Jo Ruble of Ellington, Mo. Also surviving are four great-grandchildren, Emily, Isaac, Dean, and Oliver; five great-step-grandchildren, Daniel Griffon, Amy Hawkey, Abrielle Borkewicz, Christopher Borkewicz, and Lacey Borkewicz.

Funeral services were held Jan. 22 at Vulcan Assembly of God Church with Rev. Jerry Cuneio delivering the message. Fred Allen, Donald Reed, Milton Ruble, Tony Ruble, and Charles Ruble served as pallbearers. Burial was in the Sutton Cemetery in Vulcan.

Died:

Lucy Asberry, daughter of the late Della (Russell) Lewis and Glover Lewis, was born on Harrison Valley in Redford on Oct. 15, 1927. She departed this life at Southeast Hos­pital in Cape Girardeau on Sept. 24, 2017, at the age of 89.

On March 23, 1952, in St. Lou­is, Lucy was united in marriage to Udell Asberry and to this union four children were born. He preced­ed her in death on Dec. 21, 2015. Lucy was a member of the Redford Church of the Nazarene. Her hob­bies included scrapbooking, Reynolds County Genealogy, going to flea markets and going to yard sales.

Lucy is survived by her four children, Diana (Asberry) San­dusky of Bernie, Lewis (Pamela) Asberry of Bonne Terre, Nancy (Wesley) Roberts of Ellington, Clifford (Molly) Asberry of Iron­ton; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Lucy will be deeply missed by her family and many friends who will mourn her passing.

Visitation and funeral services were held Thursday, Sept. 28 at McSpadden Funeral Home; with Rev. Patrick Pyles officiating. Burial was in Ellington Memorial Cemetery. Serving as pallbear­ers were: Franklin, Brandon and Jarid Roberts, Jeffrey Sandusky, Andrew Asberry and Matthew Hollingsworth.

Arrangements were under the direction of McSpadden Funeral Home in Ellington.

Bessie "BeaBea" Lewis Thomson, our bright light, 81 of Hanahan, South Carolina, wife of Charles "Chuck" Allen Thomson, went to heaven on Monday, May 16, 2016 at a local hospital.

Her Graveside Service will be held Wednesday, May 18, 2016 in Holy Cross Cemetery, 604 Fort Johnson Road at 10:30 a.m. The family will receive friends Tuesday in J. Henry Stuhr Inc., Downtown Chapel from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.

BeaBea was born December 4, 1934 in Lesterville, Missouri, daughter of the late Glover Lewis and Della Russell Lewis. In 1958, she met Chuck at the USO club and they were married shortly after. Known for her optimism and sense of style, she was a vivacious fun-loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She was a retired salesperson, having worked for Havertys Furniture Company for 28 years.

She was a devoted member of Yeamans Park Presbyterian Church. BeaBea adored her family, friends, her beautiful yard, and her church. She never met a stranger and was loved by all whose lives she touched.

She is predeceased by her brother, Burt Lewis and sister, May Lewis.

Gladine Louise Stark of Arcadia, Missouri passed away July 15, 2017 at the age of 97 years. She was born July 11, 1920 in Sabula, Missouri the daughter of the late John Robert and Minnie Raymoth (Huff) Lewis.

On June 6, 1942 she was united in marriage to Arthur "Corky" Stark who preceded her in death on January 25, 2010. To this union two children were born; Arthur L. Stark and wife, Margaret of Roselle, Missouri and Patsy Smith of Arcadia Missouri. In addition to her children, Gladine is survived by two sisters; Tenna Bell (Clinton) Crocker of Ironton, Missouri and Imogene Allmon of Springfield, Missouri, five grandchildren; David Stark and wife Anitra of Ironton, Tim Stark of Ironton, Jennifer Cain and husband, David stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas, Kelly Silvy and husband Michael of Arcadia, Pam Cissell Aman and husband, Rod of St. Charles, six great grandchildren; Alex Stark, Logan, Dalton, and Darien Cain, Noah, Elijah, and Josiah Silvy.

Gladine was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Corky Stark, her brother, Marvin Lon Lewis and five sisters; Edna Lewis, Patsy Lou (Harold) Scaggs, Lucille (Orville) Dennison, Ruth Botkins Greenhill and Pauline (David) Meadows.

Gladine was a 1938 graduate of Annapolis High School. She became a member of the Arcadia Valley United Methodist Church in 1950 and she participated in the Albright Sunday School Class. In 1953, she started the Dairy Cream on Main Street in Ironton. The following year she and Corky purchased a Dairy Queen franchise which they owned and operated in Arcadia for twenty-one years.

In 1952 she began her long and fulfilling journey in the Order of the Eastern Star that took her to become the Worthy Grand Matron for the State of Missouri in 1969. She also served as the Grand Treasurer as well as on various other committees for the O.E.S. She and Corky belonged to the Do-Si-Do's square dance club. In 1975 she owned a dress shop, Pat's Fashionland along with her daughter, Pat. Gladine loved people and she lived her life to the fullest.

A Military Service was held at the Big Creek Church on Saturday afternoon for Pfc. Marvin L. Lewis who was killed in Germany. Rev. Vernon Parker was in charge of the service assisted by the American Legion and Auxiliary of Annapolis flag escorts and guards who were also pallbearers.

This is the first of the Iron County boys killed abroad to be returned home.

Marvin Lewis, first of the almost forty war veterans from Iron County who died overseas to be brought back to this county was a student in the Annapolis schools while we were a teacher there. We had him in our classes for about two years. He was a lad who had no trouble in making friends, not only among the students but his teachers, too. His was a winning smile and a laughing voice. When anything was to be done, he was ready and always did his share of the hard work, carnival, May Day, whatever it was. Then, one day, he came to us and said he was quitting school to enlist in the service of his country. Some time later, he was back on furlough and came to visit the school, looking so nice in his uniform. Not only the boys but the girls all crowded around him to visit with him during his too-short stay. The war was going badly and he, with a lot of other young lads, was rushed in to stem the German tide. The Nazis were stopped but it took a lot of blood to do it. Some of it was our Iron County lads'.

After attending school in Bismarck he worked at several jobs, but mostly in construction as a bricklayer and later as a master carpenter.
