After their marriage they immigrated to Missouri, and settled in Cape Girardeau County in 1833. There they entered land and improved a farm, upon which Mrs. McNeely still resides. Died:
From The Southeast Missourian, 15 May, 1941:

John T. McNeely, 81, Leemon Community Leader, Passes Away.

John T. McNeely, 81 years old, a farmer and community leader of
the Leemon community for many years, died at his home at 6 o'clock
Thursday night of progressive paralysis of long standing. He was
in poor health for more than a year, but was bedfast only since
    Monday.

Mr. McNeely was born in the Leemon community Nov. 3, 1859, and
spent nearly all his life in that vicinity, being a successful
farmer. After reaching advanced age, he and Mrs. McNeely resided
two years in Cape Girardeau, then moved back to Leemon.

Always taking a keen interest in religious and public affairs,
he was active in social and political affairs. At one time he was
a member of the Farm Grange, was active in the Modern Woodsmen of
America Lodge, and was an active member of the Fairview Methodist
    Church for 51 years.

history, and preservation of the building and grounds. He was
especially energetic as a member of the Cape County Historical
    Society.

Mr. McNeely was somewhat of a philosopher, and his home,
attractively situated on a knoll overlooking Indian Creek, was a
storehouse of interesting literature in which he spent many of his
spare hours. All his neighbors were his friends, who respected
    him.

On Dec. 12, 1889, he was married to Miss Jennie Stevenson of
Shawneetown. She survives, as do three daughters, Mrs. C. A. Poe of
St. Louis, Mrs. Ed Tuschhoff of Old Appleton, and Mrs. Ted
Regenhardt of Cape Girardeau; four grandchildren, one sister, Mrs.

of Fullerton, Cal., and Mrs. W. H. Cunningham of Campbell.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 2:30
o'clock, at Old Appleton Presbyterian Church. The body was to be
taken from the Cracraft-Miller Funeral Home at Jackson to the
family home at Leemon this afternoon to remain there until time for
    the funeral.

Rev. G. W. King, a circuit rider of the times.

Of this union there were four children, all daughters, there
being one set of twins, Miss Bessie McNeely (deceased) and Mrs.
Edward Tuschoff. The first born was Mrs. C. A. Poe and the last,

of their daughter, Mrs. T. R. Regenhardt, 101 South Boulevard.
They go occasionally to the old home place and will be there
Sunday, as well as at the church service and the golden wedding

Cape Teacher Found Unconscious Beside Auto on Visit Home

Miss Bessie McNeely, a teacher in May Greene School, Friday evening drove to Leemon to spend the holidays with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John T. McNeely. After placing her automobile in the garage at the home, she went into the house, but recalling that she had left a package in the vehicle she went back to the garage.
When she failed to return to the house the family became alarmed and went to look for her. She was found lying on the ground near her automobile and was carried to the house, where she remained unconscious until this morning. A physician who was called could not determine what had occurred, but there was no indication of any violence.
It was reported this afternoon she had regained consciousness after being unconscious all night and her family said she appeared to be some better. They are puzzled, as is the physician as to what occurred, as she had been in good health and had not been ill lately. Miss Alma Schrader, principal of the May Greene School, said Miss McNeely appeared well Friday when she left school. She has taught a number of years in the school system and is regarded as one of the more proficient instructors.

    City Briefs
BETTER--The condition of Miss Bess McNeely, May Greene School teacher, was reported much improved today at Southeast Missouri Hospital. She is conscious now all of the time, but has been unable to solve the mystery in connection with her illness. Miss McNeely was found unconscious, lying on the ground and gasping for breath, beside her automobile at her home near Leemon last Friday night. All that she has been able to recall is what felt like a blow on the back of her head, near the top. Whether she was struck by someone hidden in the garage or struck her head in falling has not been determined.
Since regaining consciousness Miss McNeely has complained of extreme soreness and pain on the back of her head. Except for her parents, she is not permitted to have visitors, but is believed to be out danger now.

    Condition of Teacher
    Is Reported Serious

Miss Bess McNeely, teacher at May Green School, who was found unconscious on the ground near her automobile at her home at Leemon Friday night, was brought to Southeast Missouri Hospital at 4 a. m. today in a serious condition.
The cause of her illness has not been determined. but the possibility of her having met with violence has been eliminated. After she left school Friday afternoon she drove to the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John T. McNeely, near Leemon. After eatingher supper, she read for an hour before remembering that she had left a package in her car, and went to get it. When she did not return in a reasonable time, her sister, Mrs. Elsie Tuschhoff, went to look for Miss McNee1y, and found her lying face down, gasping for breath. The package was on the running board of the car.
After being unconscious all Friday night, she was conscious at intervals Saturday, though she seemed confused and could tell nothing of what had happened to her. Although she seemed better Sunday after a restless night, her condition became much worse Sunday night, when she, had spasms most of the night.

Miss Bess McNeely, teacher in the May Green school of Cape Girardeau was found unconscious near her automobile at the home of her father, John T. McNeely, at Leemon Friday night, She had driven to her home and after going into the house left stating she had forgotten a package in her car. ‘When she did not return a search was made and she was found lying on her face, the package being found on the running board. After she failed to regain consciousness she was taken to the Southeast Missouri hospital Monday morning. Tests and X-ray pictures‘ have been made but the cause of her illness has not been determined. A Jackson phvsician who first attended; her contends that she met with violence.

    Teacher of Cape Dies

Miss Bess McNeely Stricken at St. Louis

Miss Bess McNeely, a teacher at May Greene School here and a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John T. McNeely of Leemon, died at 4 a. m. today at the St. Louis County Hospital, after collapsing on a motor bus Thursday night while in St. Louis for the State Teacher Association meeting.

Miss McNeely, alone, was enroute to the home or Dr. and Mrs. C. A. Poe, her sister and brother-in-law, who reside in Wellston, with whom she was visiting while in the city.

It was not readily determined who Miss McNeely was, and she was taken to St. Louis County Hospital for treatment. She did not regain consciousness.

    How Identified

The name of Mrs. O. C. Douglas, 101 South Boulevard, Cape Girardeau, Miss McNeely, sharing an apartment with the Douglas family, was found in a purse the teacher carried. Mrs. Douglas was telephoned by the hospital office and she advised the hospital to get in touch with Dr. Poe.

Dr. Poe told The Missourian this norming over telephone that he and other doctors who were with Miss McNeely trough the night, planned an autopsy today to determine definitely, if possible, the cause of her death.

Miss McNeely had been feeling badly 10 days, according to Miss Alma Schrader, principal of May Green School. She had visited a physician Tuesday afternoon, when she could not get relief from intermittent attacks of dizziness.

    To Attend Meeting

Miss Schrader had advised Miss McNeely that she should excuse herself from attending the teacher’s meeting in St. Louis, and rest through the weekend. However, Miss McNeely, apparently feeling it her duty, went with other Cape Girardeau instructors Wednesday night to St. Louis for the convention.

During the Christmas holiday vacation three years ago Miss McNeely was stricken while at her parent’s home in Leemon. She was found in the garage in a dazed condition after she had driven her car into the building.

Miss McNeely was a graduate of Teachers College here and had taught in schools of Pemiscot County. Since 1935 she had been on the May Greene School staff here, and was known as a teacher particularly able and conscientious. Surviving, besides her parentsare three sisters, Mrs. Poe, Mrs. Ted Regenhardt and Mrs. E. C. Tuschhoff of Old Appleton, the later being a twin.

Dr. Poe said this morning plans were to send the body to Jackson today, and it was said that a Cracraft-Miller-Allen hearse went to St. Louis for the body expecting to return late today.

Dr. Poe said tentative plans were to have the funeral Sunday afternoon.

Miss McNeely belonged to the Fairview Methodist Church near Fruitland, and attended various churches in Cape Girardeau, including Centenary Methodist Church and the Presbyterian Church.

    Notes:

Alice Alline Lewis (nee Regenhardt) passed away May 2, 2017.

Alice was born March 24, 1925 to Lois Alline (nee McNeely) and Ted R. Regenhardt in Cape Girardeau.

Her father was associated with his father and brothers in the Regenhardt Construction Company. The family moved every year or every other year following their highway construction jobs throughout Illinois and eastern Missouri.

Her grandfather, Edward Regenhardt, was the general contractor for the construction of Academic Hall, the main administration building of what is now Southeast Missouri State University and a Cape Girardeau landmark.

By the time she was high school age, her parents moved the family back to Cape permanently.

She attended Franklin School for the 9th grade, and Cape Central high school the next 3 years, and next attended Southeast Missouri State Teachers College, where she graduated with a B.S. degree in Secondary Education, specializing in Home Economics. Her first job was as a teacher in Lawrence, IL. The next year she worked in St. Louis County as an assistant home extension agent.

She married Freeman Lewis, owner of Wimpy's Drive In and Grocery on September 25, 1948. They joined Centenary Methodist Church later that year.

In 1969, Alice began work as an elementary Guidance Counselor for the Sikeston Public Schools.

In 1970, she went back to SEMO and worked on her master’s degree in elementary guidance counseling, accomplishing her goal in 1973, the same year her son Rob graduated from SEMO. She retired from her work in Sikeston after 20 years, in 1989.

She belonged to the Missouri State Teacher’s Association and was a charter member of the Professional Home Economists organization.

Active in the life of Centenary Methodist Church for 68 years, she served in several capacities: church secretary, nursery coordinator, church board of trustees, and various United Methodist Women offices.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and P.E.O.

Alice loved to read, play bridge and assemble jigsaw puzzles. She embroidered quilts for her grandchildren as well as creating needlepoint pictures and chair covers. A love of travel took her across the U.S. and one trip to Europe.

She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Freeman.

They have two sons, Rob (Diane) Lewis of San Antonio, Texas and Jon (Susan) Lewis of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Grandchildren Sarah (Thomas) Satterwhite, Angela (Justin) Morgan, and Stephen Lewis. Great-grandchildren Blake and Emily Satterwhite.

She is also survived by her brother Don (Linda) Regenhardt of Chevy Chase, MD; one cousin, Joe (Mary Alice) Regenhardt of Cape Girardeau; six nephews and eight nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Teddy and a sister Dee Ann, both when young children.

A visitation will be held Sunday, May 7th from 2 pm – 3 pm at Centenary United Methodist Church. The memorial service follows at 3 pm. Interment private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Centenary United Methodist Church, 300 N. Ellis St., Cape Girardeau, MO 63701.
