James Lewis, age 72, died at the home of his son, N. A., Saturday night after an illness of about a year. Last winter he had the smallpox from which he never fully recovered. However, it was only within the past two weeks he had become bedfast. The remains were shipped to Des Arc, MO for burial, that place being the deceased's former home. The corpse was accompanied by his wife and his sons, Drew, Ed, and Toney. Mr. Lewis was county judge at Des Arc for a term or two, and he has hosts of friends residing at that place. Mr. Lewis had been married twice. In 1871 he was married to Miss Lucinda Wallace. To them were born 9 children, 8 of whom are living. She died in 1908. In 1911 he was married to Mrs. Anna Williams, his present wife. Mr. Lewis came to this place from Des Arc in 1914 and had been a resident ever since. He was counted among our citizens.

!OBITUARY
Zell Washington Lewis, son of James and Lucinda Lewis, was born in Des Arc, NO. on Nov. 13, 1878 and died at his home in Des Arc, No. on July 18, 1958 at the age of 79 years, 8 months, and 5 days.

On March 10, 1901, he was united in marriage to Miss Bertha Ann Stevenson and to this union four children were born.

In 1948 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Lucille Gibson.

He leaves to mourn his departure his wife, Mrs. Lucille Gibson Lewis of Des Arc, No., 4 children, Mrs. Blanche Semands of Des Arc, No., Everett of
Whittier, Calif., Chester of Englewood, Calif., and Wellman of Yucca Valley, Calif.

He also leaves 8 stepchildren, 7 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren; 3 brothers, Eli, of McRae, Ark., Toney, of Clinton, Ark. and Fred of Yakima, Wash.

In 1905 he professed his faith in Christ and in 1919 united with the Des Arc Nazarene Church and for the last 5 years has been Sunday School Supt.

He spent his entire life in the Des Arc Community as a respected and useful citizen and will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved his.

Services were from the Des Arc Gymnasium at 2:30, July 21, Rev. Everett Lewis in charge. Interment was in the Mountain View Cemetery with Gish Funeral Service. (THE MOUNTAIN ECHO newspaper... Ironton, Iron County, NO... July 31, 1958)

She was a gourmet cook and a past member of the Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by her husband James Raymond Johnston: two sons James Raymond Johnston Jr. and Richard L. “Beaver” Johnston. She is survived by a daughter Jamie Warren and husband James of Little Rock: a sister Novis Lewis Baughn of Arlington, Texas. Merel Louise James, age 95, of Clinton, Arkansas, passed away Tuesday, February 16, 2010, at the Conway Regional Medical Center. Born on December 23, 1914, at Pangburn, she was the daughter of the late James Andrew and Rebecca (Ruble) Lewis.
Mrs. James was a homemaker, and her religious belief was Baptist. She was preceded in death by her husband, Olas Walden James, on October 1, 1976.

Mrs. James is survived by one son, Michael James and his wife, Betty, of Malvern; three grandchildren, Mary Steffey, Jeremiah James, and Michelle McCarn; and three great grandchildren, Abigail James, Anna McCarn, and Addison McCarn. Mrs. James is also survived by other relatives and her many friends.

Visitation will begin Saturday, Feb. 20, at 11:00 a.m. at the Friendship Baptist Church at Clinton with funeral services following at 1:00 p.m., officiated by Rev. David Holcomb. Interment will follow in the Pee Dee Cemetery.

James (Jimmy) Carson Lewis born in Pangburn Arkansas March 19, 1918, died February 10, 2013. He was a long-time member of Church of Christ. Jimmy served his country in the United States Army Air Force in WWII as a tail gunner. For more than 30 years he owned and operated Jimmy Lewis Grocery in Damascus, Arkansas. After retirement he became the Chief of Police at Fair Field Bay and Deputy Sheriff of Van Buren County.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Edward B. and Katherine Dubbs Lewis, step-mother Bertha Yingling Lewis, four brothers Orvel, Howard, Raymond, and Arthur, and two sisters, Hazel and Stella.

Survivors include his wife of 75 years Aline Nicholson Lewis; two sons James Lee and his wife Bonnie Nixon Lewis of Sarasota, FL, and Edward Earl and wife Jan Bonds Lewis of Little Rock, Arkansas; a brother Edwin Lewis of Stone Mountain, Georgia; a step-sister Frances Evans of Clinton, Arkansas; two grandchildren James Alan and his wife Pamela Stedina Lewis of Bradenton, Florida, Janice Lewis and her husband Billy George of North Carolina; four great-grandchildren, Whitney Lee Russell , Haleigh Elizabeth Russell, Kelsey Rose Russell, all of North Carolina; and one great-great- grandson Braylon Alexander Boone of North Carolina.

Services will be at Roller-McNutt Funeral Home in Greenbrier AR (501)679-2575, Saturday, February 16, 2013, with the visitation at 12:00 Noon, and funeral services at 1:00 p.m. Interment will be at Spires Cemetery in Damascus, AR.

Elvis Eli Lewis, longtime area buisinessman, died Sept. 7, at his home in Piedmont. He was 66.
A retired minister, Rev. Lewis was born April 16, 1918 in Des Arc, the son of Eli and Rella Mae Robinson Lewis.
On May 28, 1937 he was united in marriage to Velma Jane White who survives.
Also surviving are seven sons, Paul of Troy, Hollis of Piedmont, Walter of House Springs, Wayne, St. Louis, Jerry of O'Fallon, David of Atlanta, 6a., Gary of Arnold, three daughters, Maxine Pyles of St. Charles, Cynthia Young, New Douglas, Ill., Carolyn Radditz of Piedmont; 26 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; four brothers, Claude of Des Arc, Vernon of Piedmont, Phineas, Lake Charles, La., Eual J. (John) of Pilot Knob; one sister, Ruth Ricketts of Arcadia; other relatives and a host of friends.
Preceding him in death were his parents and three brothers, Clell, Glide and Clift.
In 1949 Mr. Lewis converted, was ordained on Feb. 25, 1963 and served churches in Annapolis, Black and Belleview. His last ministry was in the State Park Missionary Baptist Church in Collinsville, Ill.
At the time of his death Rev. Lewis was a member of the First Baptist Church in Piedmont.
He worked in timber, operated a broiler plant in Des Arc and for many years owned and operated the Lewis Purina Feed Store in Piedmont before going into full-time ministry.
The funeral was held Sept. 9 at 3:00 p.a. in the First Baptist Church in Piedmont. Rev. Tom Bray and Rev. Lee Roy Quinn conducted the service. Music was by the church choir with Linda Jackson, pianist, Esther Cross, organist.
Pallbearers were grandsons: Scott Lewis, Jason Lewis, Darren Lewis, Mike Lewis, Damon Lewis and Mike Silverberg. Burial in the Mountain View Cemetery directed by the Gish-Bowles & Codder Funeral Home.

On October 17, 1942 Ruth was united in marriage to Ray C. Harris who preceded her in death. To this union two daughters were born: Donna Rae and husband Bill Womble of Ironton, Missouri and Dottie Sue and husband Dean Goodman of Saint Louis, Missouri.

On December 24, 1976 Ruth was united in marriage to Joel Ricketts who also preceded her in death.

Ruth is survived by a brother John Lewis of Ironton, Missouri, three grandchildren: Tim Womble, Craig Womble, and Derek Goodman; three great-grandchildren Claire Goodman, Tyler Womble, and Chase Goodman as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends. Ruth is preceded in death by husbands Ray Harris and Joel Ricketts, brothers Cliff, Glide, Claude, Vernon, Clell, Phineas, and Elvis Lewis.

After graduating high school, Ruth attended Chillicothe Business College. In 1957 Ruth went to work for Cleo West, Iron County Clerk. Eual John Lewis of Ironton, Missouri passed away January 18, 2018 in St. Louis, Missouri at the age of 90 years. He was born February 10, 1927 in Des Arc, Missouri the son of the late Eli and Rella Mae (Robinson) Lewis.

Eual married Mary Frances Colyott on August 14, 1948. To this union three children were born; John Lewis and wife, Sandie of Fenton, Missouri, Doug Lewis and wife, Lisa of Fenton, Missouri and Debra Kay West who preceded him in death. Also surviving are his son-in-law, Michael West of Viburnam, nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Eual was preceded in death by his sister, Ruth Ricketts, and his brothers; Glide Lewis, Clift Lewis, Claude Lewis, Clell Lewis, Vernon Lewis, Phineas Lewis and Elvis Lewis.

Eual served his country in the United States Army. He was a rural mail carrier for the United States Postal Service. Eual was a member of the Glover Baptist Church. He was a past member of the Lesterville Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed woodworking, buying and selling antiques and traveling.

Mr. Richard Lewis "Beaver T" Johnston of Heber Springs, Arkansas, passed away Thursday, July 31, 2003, at Heber Springs. Born October 8, 1946, in Heber Springs, Beaver was 56 years of age.

He was the son of Mildred Maxine (Lewis) Johnston and the late James Raymond Johnston. Beaver was a descendent of General Albert Sidney Johnston, who led in the Civil War. Beaver served his country, his church, and his community. In 1972, he received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy.

He served as a veteran's service officer, probation officer, and deputy sheriff of Cleburne County.

He held many church callings including youth minister, Sunday School teacher, worship team member, and assistant in jail and prison ministry.

A lifetime resident of Heber Springs, Beaver served on the School Board, City Council, Optimist Club, and F.O.P. He owned the local skating rink, "Beaver T's Skateland", and he coached soccer, baseball, basketball, and football teams. Beaver was talented musician and writer. From a young age, he played drums and sang in bands, including the "T-birds" and "Retreads". He played for church bands, toured, and recorded "Save the Last Dance", (Flat-tail Records). Beaver was an accomplished author, publishing the children's book "A Beaver's Tale" in 1980.

Beaver "never met a stranger". He enjoyed meeting people and had many friends of all ages and walks of life. He was kind, compassionate, and always willing to help. Beaver was a loving father and grandfather. He was always "there" to listen and advise. He taught his children to love the Lord and serve others. He would spend hours talking and playing with the children. He was a father, a friend, a hero. He once wrote "I figure when I get as old as I'll ever be, I'll be as young as I want to be."

Beaver was preceded in death by his father, James Raymond Johnston, and by one brother, Jim Johnston. He is survived by: two sons, Josh Johnston and his wife, Jennifer, of Hopewell, AR and Will Johnston of Hopewell, AR two daughters, April Kapu and her husband, Paul, of Nashville, TN and Summer Johnston of Austin, Texas his mother, Mildred Maxine Johnston of Heber Springs, AR one sister, Jamie Warren and her husband, James, of Little Rock, AR, and their children, James and David, and five grandchildren, Paul, Nicole, John, Gabriel, and Jacob. Beaver is also survived by other relatives and his many friends.

CAUSE OF DEATH: Struck by a car as he was crossing street.

She was a teacher-educator at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, before spending 20 years as a State Superviser with the Arkansas State Departmentof Education in Little Rock. Ms. Baker was a member of the Pee Dee Baptist Church and many professional education organizations.

Hollis Lewis, age 80, of Piedmont, Mo.,, passed away Thursday, April 23, at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center. He was born August 30, 1939, to parents Elvis Eli and Velma Jane (White) Lewis. Hollis was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend.

He is survived by his wife of 10 years, Bernadine (Tucker) Lewis.

In the 1960s, Hollis followed in his father’s footsteps taking over Elvis Lewis Feed Store in Piedmont, renaming the business Lewis Feed Store, before selling the store in 1983, to Dennis Johnson, which is now Johnson Feed Store. Hollis owned and ran the store for twenty years.

After selling the feed store, Hollis then opened Lewis Insurance Agency in Piedmont, and operated it for over twenty years.

In his spare time, he enjoyed farming raising pigs, cows, and goats. Hollis also enjoyed golfing and traveling, especially to Texas.

Funeral service followed on Monday, May 4, 2020, also in the Piedmont Chapel. Bro. Gary Rhodes, Bro. Glen Hunter, and Bro. Jim Norman ministered to the family. Music was provided by Jamie Hovis. Jeff Lewis, Jason Lewis, Caleb Knodell, Cody Knodell, J P Lewis, Dayton Lewis, and Tim Bridges served as pallbearers. Burial was in Mt. View Cemetery, Des Arc, M0.

Jerrel “Wayne” Lewis, 78, of St. Louis, MO, passed away November 7, 2020, at Mercy Hospital South in St. Louis. He was born in Pangburn, Arkansas, January 24, 1942, to the parents Elvis Eli and Velma Jane (White) Lewis.

Wayne was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother. He married Shirley Sutton on September 1,1962, and they were blessed with two children. He was a supervisor and worked in customer service many years. Wayne loved to be outside working in the yard, going for walks, often traveling and was very active. He had a great love for his family.

In addition to his parents, he is proceeded in death by two brothers: Walter and Hollis Lewis.

Wayne is survived by his loving and devoted wife of fifty-eight years; children Randy Lewis and wife Tracie of Washington, MO, Shannon McNamara and husband Matthew of Bartlett, IL; grandchildren: Cameron McNamara, and Faith McNamara; brothers: Paul Vernon Lewis of Troy, Jerry Lewis of St. Louis, David Lewis of Savannah, GA, Gary Lewis of St. Louis; sisters: Maxine Pyles of St. Charles, Cynthia Martin of Patterson, and Carolyn Raddatz of Piedmont.
