    Cocke County, Tennessee
Early Settlers of the Old 12th District

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------

The following is a list of early settlers who lived on the waters off Cosby and Groundhog creeks, creeks that are mostly in what was
the old 12th district of Cocke County. This list comes from land entries on Tennessee State Library and Archives (TSLA) microfilm #36. The label on the copy of the film I have says the and entries are on the second item on the film; they are on the third item. It also gives dates of April 1874 to June 1898. These may be the years
that the original book was copied or families brought the originals to be re-recorded. The actual dates of the land entries are 1824 to
about 1831, making them some of the earliest surviving records of Cocke County.

The original land entries were surveys and included drawings as well as descriptions. The drawings were not copied into the new book. The verbal descriptions often included reference to neighbors. And there were always two names at the left bottom of the description. I believe these were witnesses or attestors. I think they were also neighbors.

I have abstracted the page numbers, landowners? names, dates they
made the entries, any reference to neighbors, and the attestors names. Most of the landowners lived on the waters of Cosby Creek; I specifically mention those that lived on Groundhog Creek.

Research by Judith Nan Lewis on Find a Grave Memorial 78484876.

Robert Lewis, Sr. is the son of John Lewis (1740 Halifax, Halifax, VA- 1830 Spotsylvania, Spotsylvania, VA) and Elizabeth (Lax) Lewis (Born 1745 Halifax, Halifax, VA)

Robert Lewis, Sr. married Sarah Cagle before 1810 in North Carolina.

Robert Lewis, Sr. and Sarah Cagle Lewis are listed in the 1810 census of Buncombe, North Carolina. They moved from Buncombe, North Carolina to Marion County, Tennessee by 1820, and are listed in the 1820 census of Warren Co., TN. They then moved to Marion County, Tennessee by 1830 and are listed in the 1830 census of Marion County TN.

Sometime in the mid to late 1830's, Robert Lewis, Sr. and Sarah Cagle Lewis, traveled from Marion County, TN down the Tennessee River on a flat bottom boat and docked at Fort Deposit, Alabama.

From Fort Deposit, Alabama, Robert Lewis, Sr. and his wife, Sarah Cagle Lewis, and their children made their way to a near by mountain and settled at the bottom of that mountain. They built their home, cultivated the land and raised their younger children there. Over a period of time, the family members of Robert Lewis, Sr. and Sarah Cagle Lewis accumlated and owned 3,000 acres of land, which made up the area of the mountain, upon which they had settled on. The Mountain was later named "Lewis Mountain" after Robert Lewis, Sr.

Robert Lewis, Sr. and Sarah Cagle Lewis had eight children together by their marriage:

(1.) John Lewis (1816 NC - Aft. 1880 TN), he married Elizabeth Wilcoxen.

    (2.) Leonard L. Lewis (1818 NC-1897 Marshall Co.,AL)
Married 1st: Dec. 27, 1839; Marshall Co., AL
Spouse 1: Mary Adeline Thompson (they had one child)

Married 2nd: Feb. 10, 1842; Marshall Co., AL
Spouse 2: Diannah Patterson (They had six children)

Married 3rd: Apr. 01, 1877; Coryell Co., TX
Spouse 3: Rachel Whittenburg (they did not have any
    children together by their marriage)

(3.) Henry Lewis (1820 TN -Aft. 1880 AL), he married 1st to Margaret Patterson on Aug 25, 1839 in Marshall Co., AL.; he married 2nd to Margaret Martha C. Key.

(4.) Charles L. Lewis (1823 TN - Oct. 28, 1888 TN), he married Julia Ann Henson.

(5.) Jacob Nathan Lewis (1826 TN - Aft. 1880 AL), he married 1st to Mary Whittenburg/he married 2nd to Elizabeth Emaline Hatfield.

(6.) Robert Lewis, Jr. (Nov 26, 1828 TN - 1868 AL), he married Mary Polly Whittenburg.

(7.) Margaret Lewis (born: 1832 TN - 1871 AL), she never married.

(8.) Katherine Lewis (1834 TN - 1914 TX), she married
    Jacob "Jake" Whitenberg

Note: A careful study of all the census of Robert Lewis, Sr. and Sarah Cagle Lewis is suggested before adding any more children for them. On the early census where marks were made for other members in the household of Robert Lewis, there were no other marks for children other than those named above. While there were errors on some of their census (marks in wrong sex or age lines, the above children are the only children born to Robert Lewis, Sr. and Sarah Cagle Lewis, and they do fit in, while no other children will fit in and follow in a logical order through out all of their census.

    ALLIED LEWIS FAMILIES
; ; The Lewis families of Madison, Iron, and Reynolds Counties are a prolific clan, which I could not cover in a whole book, let alone a few pages, but I do have some points I would like to make. ; In 1850 Madison County census, there were 5 families, three of which lived next door to each other that I feel must have been related as mentioned previously. ; The other two I'm not certain of were Furney Lewis, born N.C., age 31, who had married Nancy Perringer in 1838, Madison County and had four children, John, 10, Amanda 7, Leonard 6, and Martha 1 in the 1850 census. ; The other was John Lewis, 41 from S.C., wife Caroline 20, Laura 2, and John L. 5 mo. ; I make this point because each had a son John that will later be important. ; The two families that were: ; #496-Jacob Lewis-45-born N.C., Sarah 17 TN, Bidda 15, TN, Martha E. 13, Eli, 11, John Y., 9, & Catherine 7, all born TN, Hugh P. 5, Polly Ann 4, James Millow, 2, and Emiline 3 mo. ; There was also Eliza J. 10, born TN, who belonged to Jacob but w
In 1860 Iron County census I found: ; the John Lewis from SC, who married Caroline, Robert Lewis, the son of Georg who had been in Arkansas, next door to him was John and Emiline Lewis, and next to them was Benjamin Lewis, son of George also. ; ; Close bywas John Lewis, Jr. (son of George) and wife Nancy, and closer to Annapolis was William Lewis (son of George also) and finally Elizabeth Lewis, widow of George. ; I did not find David Lewis (who had been in 1850 Madison County census) nor his family again, but early land plats show David Lewis and Oliver Lewis (his son) owning land right near John, George and all the other Lewises.
Other Lewis researchers in Missouri have mistakingly assumed that John (who married Emiline Dunn) was the son of George, even though they found the two John's listed on the same census. ; I am referring here to the one listed as John Jr. who was 26 in the1860 census, wife Nancy, 25, Delia, 8, George, 6, James, 4, and Benjamin, 8 mo. Who was the real son of George, and was in Marion County TN in 1850. ; Although there was a definite relationship between George and John (who married Emiline), they were notfather and son, but brothers. ; I will concentrate now on George's son Robert, who has family connections with mine, but will first list all of George's children and who they married.
    1. Mary, married James Hale and stayed in TN.
    2. Catherine, married Robinson Griffith and stayed in Arkansas.
    3. Robert, married Mary 'Polly' Griffith, and was in Arkansas before coming to Missouri.
    4. Benjamin, married Oma Hewitt (He was in MO in 1850).
    5. John (listed as Jr.), married Nancy ___?____.
    6. William, married Abigail Johnson.
    7. Martha 'Patty', married James Casteel.
    8. Elizabeth married Thomas Jackson.
    9. Andrew, married Angeline Rose.
    10. James married Lucinda Wallis.
    11. Hepsi, married William Ruble.

    Notes:

"I will explain how I came to this conclusion if anyone wants to know, but I am now confident that I have identified the family of my great grandmother, Adeline Lewis (Green). And of course, this comes right after I had resigned myself to another ten years of searching. I have suspected for several weeks that the Jacob Lewis family of Madison County Missouri was my line, and that his daughter Bidda was my great grandmother. However, I had given up on finding any hard facts that would allow me to make thisclaim with confidence. People did occasionally change their first names, but it is not all that common. I needed something substantial before accepting a name change. Then I discovered that Jacob's youngest daughter Emeline (Lewis) Voyles and her husbandhad joined Allen and Adeline Green in the very small town of Buda, Illinois for several years in the late 1870s and early 1880s. With all the other evidence pointing to this connection, I am now convinced. Bidda and Adeline are the same person, and she

In a way I feel a little sad because I had researched several Lewis lines so diligently I got to feel like I knew them personally. There is a sense of loss to realize they are not my family. But then, all of them did come out of North Carolina, so a common bond may yet exist.

A quick look at the records gives me an overview of this family. There were at least two Lewis brothers, John and Benjamin, living in Buncombe County, North Carolina after the Revolutionary War. Together they moved to Cocke County, Tennessee, which was nogreat distance. I cannot tell yet just when they made the move because the census records of Tennessee are missing until 1830. In the early 1820s the state of Tennessee began selling land in that area very cheaply (12 1/2 cents per acre) to raise money for their school system. It is possible that the Lewis families came at that time, but I can't say yet. This is all too new for me at this time.

Apparently John and Benjamin Lewis had a sister Bidda, and she married a Randolph Lane (Lain). This family was among the Cocke County settlers. Two of the next generation, George and Jacob Lewis, were born in N C, but reached adulthood in Cocke County where they married. Jacob married Mary Martin, and these would be my great great grandparents. Since Mary would not have been alone as a young single girl on the wilderness frontier, her family was no doubt in Cocke County also. Adeline (Bidda) Green, my great grandmother, stated in the 1880 census that her mother was born in South Carolina. Often times the place someone spent their childhood is confused in the census records with the actual place of birth. Mary (Martin) Lewis lists Tennessee as her place ofbirth, but I noticed that the elder head of the Martin family in 1830 Cocke County is Samuel Martin. He is a veteran of the Revolution War having served from South Carolina. This is all coming together.

I will encourage any of you who wish to work together to sort out this family to contact me and begin exchanging information. One of the immediate problems is to identify which of the SE Missouri Lewis families is descended from John, and which from Benjamin. About all we know for now as far as I know is that Helen has placed Sampson Lewis of Butler County Missouri with Benjamin. There is a Zacariah Lewis also in Butler who is older than Sampson and apparently connected, but not necessarily a brother.

Also, the possibility exists that John, Benjamin, and Bidda had other siblings. In fact, it is even likely. I am very eager to examine the pension file for Samuel Martin to find out where he lived in SC, and if there were any Lewis families in the same area. Is this exciting or what????" [Randolph Lane.FTW]

Biddy's maiden name has remained elusive to those of us researching the family. Vern Eldridge writes that Palmer and Margeret Lane state that they recall Everett saying that his father (Moses) had told him that his mother's maiden name was "Dunn". Others feel that her maiden name might have been "Lewis" or 'Gilliand".

In the 1850 Madison Co., MO census Biddy is not listed in the household of Randolph but she is there in 1860 Liberty Twp., Iron Co, MO - listing her birthplace as from South Carolina.

    July 12, 2000, Gary D. Lane writes:
I am again questioning Biddy's maiden name.
We know she is listed as being from SC, and her children indicate their mother as being from SC. However the only families we find near Randolph who are from SC are the Dunns. With brother (?) John, in 1850, is his father-in-law Robert Gilliland, who is listed as being from SC. And next to Robert is his son William, b 1805, listed as being from TN. I'm going back to my original belief that Biddy is a Dunn, and I suspect she is the daughter of Mary Dunn. I realize Mary would have been about fourteen when Biddy was born. What's your thoughts on this?

For years I have thought that Biddy was a Lewis, while many others thought she was a Dunn, their reasoning was that widow Mary Dunn was living next door in the 1840 census, researchers have noted if Mary Dunn was the mother of Biddy, she would have been abt 13 years old when Biddy was born. Biddy shows her birth in South Carolina, which other Dunn's of this area show they were born in SC

These are now thoughts about Biddy Lane

#1 check this file under Mary, wife of Robert Dunn... descendants signed a deed in 1857, Randolph and Biddy Lane are not on that deed

I beleive Randolph Lane was the son-in-law of Benjamin Lewis

Randolph Lane was in Cocke, Tenn in 1830, in 1825 Randall Lane is listed on a land survey of Benj. Louis I see no Dunn's there, He was in Marion County, Tennesse with the Lewis families and signed on deeds with Benjamin Lewis.
Note the Aristides Smith living on the same page in 1840 Madison, Mo. there is an Ellen Smith living with Biddy and Randolph in 1860. I don't know how the Smith's might be related. There are other Smiths in Madison County at the same time period , Abraham Smith, Jacob, John and William H

When the North and South declared war against each other for the freedom of the negroes, David's home place was on the dividing line and each side took what they wanted, then burned his sawmill. He decided to move to Texas and when he reached the Red River he made a float out of dry logs and floated the wagons across. Shortly after this he took sick and died. David was a Minister and is buried in the Old Moore Graveyard. He was of medium build, dark complexion, black hair and black eyes. He worked for James R. Hatfield in Marion County, Tennessee when he met and married James Hatfield's daughter, Nancy whom he called 'Clint'

John and Emaline sold 5 acres of ground to the Methodist Episcopal Church South in a warranty deed dated 10-Sept-1870 and filed 8-Mar-1887. It was recorded in book 33-Pg-611 Iron County and $50 was paid for the land. It was in Section 28, Twp. 21 N Range 3 E and was a little North of where Little Carver Creek runs into Carver Creek. In the mid 1880's, the Lewis and McKenzie families built the church that would be known as Emily's Chapel sharing in the labor and cost of materials.
