Some things are correct, others are not. I searched for an excel file with all the names and dates, but couldn't find one. Fortunately, I have a note left by my Grandmother Green with all the names and dates of the Allen and Adeline Green family. Oldest was a daughter Mary born about 1861. I believe she died because I have no record of her except Grandmother's note. I think this is when Bidda gave up her name and took her deceased child's name. Sounds like a stretch, but I have another instance where thiswas done in the family. Allen And Bidda's youngest son Louis (why Louis and not Lewis, I don't know) was killed when he fell from a moving train beneath the wheels. His sister, Susquehanna, had a two or three year old son at the time. I don't recall whatshe had named him. But when her brother was killed, she changed the name of her son to Louis. I always knew him as Louis DuBoise, Dad's cousin. No one knew of the name change until I starting asking him things about the family.
Then there were daughters Hannah Jane and Maldane Moore. Hannah married Andy Buffington, I don't recall who Maldane married, but I have it somewhere. The marriage didn't last. Then there were twin girls named for the two rivers back in Pennsylvania where Allen was born and raised. Susquehanna and Juniata. Susquehanna married Cornelius DuBoise. Louis was their only child. Juniata died at about 2 years and is buried in Sheffield, IL. Johnston, my grandfather, was married twice. First Nellie Sumner and they had Herman and Maude. Maude died at about 15, I believe it was the measles. Herman went by his mother's name Sumner and not by the name of Green. He died childless about 1975 or something like that. Maybe later. Grandfather's second marriage was to Ethel Park, my grandmother. They had 3 boys. Johnston (my dad), Louis (named for grandfather's unfortunate brother), and Norman.
The unfortunate Louis had taken a job with the railroad after his wife Lottie left him. They had no children. I don't know his wives family name on purpose. I don't want to know her. She gave new meaning to the word "tramp". She came back to Louis and pretended a reconciliation just long enough to load up a wagon and run off to Kansas City with her boy friend. Louis was days from getting his divorce when the accident occurred. She couldn't get back to Des Moines fast enough to collect a window's railroad settlement. Then she went after all his assets. Since his elderly father, Allen Green, was being cared for by Louis when the accident happened it was all Allen had to live on. There was a family battle that followed with lawyers taking most of the money. Which wasn't all that much. As soon as Lottie had all the money she could get she disappeared, and I never went looking for her in my research.
Youngest of Allen and Bidda's children was Lily, the only one I knew. Aunt Lily had married a man who came to Bureau County, IL from Canada named Albert Norman (this is where dad's brother Norman got his name). They had a girl named Helen, and real proper, attractive, all American girl. She died of TB in her late teens. Her and my dad, about the same age, were very close.
I have a lot of the names and dates in a file in Family Tree Maker, but I can't figure out how to attach the file to an email. Other files I can do, but this has be stopped.
Allen and Bidda are in the 1870 census of Bureau County, IL. Johnston, Allen's father, is near them. I believe it is the 1880 census of Bureau Co where I found Bidda's little sister Emiline and her husband (Frank?) They are in the tiny, tiny town of Buda where my grandfather was born. I believe Bidda is using "Mary" in that census. The 1880 Bureau County census shows the family with Bidda's line telling her father was born in NC, and mother in SC. I believe she is using "Adeline for that one. There is an 1895 census for Iowa, and from them on they are in Des Moines.
Sorry I can just send you a electronic file with all the names, but until I create one or learn how to attach a file from family tree maker, I am just stuck looking for time to put something together for you. Whatever happens, stay in touch. I work 60 hours a week, and have a very difficult time doing things like this. But I haven't forgotten you.
I am of the opinion that Jacob Lewis was the son of Benjamin Eli Lewis. They went from Cocke Co to Marrion Co, TN, and then on to Madison / Iron MO. I don't know where Benjamin died. Does that agree with what you have? I am almost certain they came to Tennessee from Buncombe Co, NC. Jacob's wife Mary almost has to be the granddaughter of Samuel Martin, Rev War soldier from S C who is in the 1830 census for Cocke. I have the abstract of his pension file, but wasn't able to get his file. Do you have it?
Bill

You have correctly identified Allen and Adaline's daughter Maldane (pronounced Mal - dane). She married late in life. For a long time she worked on a road construction crew. She was the cook who prepared meals for the construction workers. She was born inBureau County, Illinois. I have a very good picture of her with sister Susquahanna, Hannah , and Lily with their father. Her full name was Maldane Moore. I have no idea where the Moore came from.
I think I need to send to you the complete list of Allen Green's children. My grandmother Green left behind a complete list of Allen's children.

This is what I found on Maldene, two marriages and two children. I just can't find her on a census except in 1930. See what you think, these Green women are hard to pin down, aren't they? I have Jane too I think
Was she Maldene or Maldena??
I hope you can open these, Bill, Let me know if you can't and I will do something else

Adaline (Obedience Lewis ) Green died in Des Moines, Iowa. I have a copy of her death certificate. She was married to Allen James Green in 1860 by the Justice of the Peace in Iron County Missouri. Allen and Adaline had about 8 children. If you want, I will send that info to you. Their youngest son Louis (Not Lewis, for whatever reason) was killed in a railroading accident and is buried in Des Moines also. His is a very sad story. If you want that story I will send it.
One small piece of evidence that the Cocke Co Lewis family was from Buncombe comes from a record by one of the businesses in Cocke Co in the 1830s. A sales transaction says "John Lewis - Buncombe". Just how John fits in with Benjamin is something I don't know. I found that is an obscure book at the library in Knoxville. I doubt you can find something like that on the Internet.
I will respond separately to your other messages.
FYI, Jacob 's son in the 1850 census named Eli is I believe actually Benjamin Eli, and he used his middle name in the census. For what it is worth
Thanks for sharing the Lewis family info. I think if we can identify the father of Benjamin, we stand a chance of connecting to the original family.

Subject: children of Allen and Adeline Green
I apologize for being so disorganized. I have more information that is scattered. It is my plan to organize all of this once I retire. But here is the best I can do for now. My dear sweet grandmother Green (born Ethel Jane Park in Shefflied, IL) left among her things a small slip of paper with the names and birthdates of her husband’s siblings and parents. Grandpa had little or no interest in such things, I am sure. I will try to fill in more details with this information.
Allen James Green – born in Blair Co, PA 3-31-1841
Additional Information: Allen died 5/13/1920 in Des Moines, IA. He married again late in life. I guess he needed someone to keep house. My dad (born in 1908) has only one memory of his grandfather. He recalls going with his father (Johnston) to deliver groceries to Allen.
Adeline Lewis – born Newport 2-18 1836
Additional Information: Adeline was born Obedience Lewis and apparently changed her name to Mary Adeline when her oldest child by that name died. Honoring tragic loss of family members by assuming their names seems to be a tradition in this family. My grandfather is said to have said of his mother “She could sing like a songbird” I have a large framed picture of her. I have determined that “Newport” is Newport, Tennessee in Cocke County, TN. She died 10-22-1893.
Their children:
1. Mary – b 12-19-1960 ( I have no further information. I assume she did not survive)
2. Hanna Jane – 1-28-1863
3. Maldane Moore – 3-9-1864 (I have heard the family speak of her. Single until into her 40s, she worked as cook on a road crew. He husband was something like Anton Kerston (sp?) and she has descendants that I corresponded with many years ago. Seems to have lived last in NE Kansas and / or NW Missouri.
4. Hattie Pearl – born 1-12-1866.
5, 6. Twins Juniata and Susquehanna: (Named for the two rives in PA where Allen Green lived as a child) Born 5-3-1968. Juniata dies about age 3 and is buried in Sheffield, IL. Her marker says her parents are A J and M A Green. While Obedience Lewis Green went by the name Adeline, and while her daughter Mary seems to have died young, from the “M A” I assume she took the name “Mary Adeline” to honor her daughter, and used the middle name to avoid confusion.
Susquehanna was beloved “Aunt Hanna’ to my parents, but died before I knew her. She married her Aunt Mary Green’s husband Cornelius DuBoise after her Aunt and Uncle divorced. They had twin sons, one of whom died as an infant. The surviving son whose birthname I do not have was renamed “Louis’ to honor Susquehanna’s brother who was killed in a railroad accident.
7. Johnston Alexander: 8-8-1870 to 1-17-1946. Married Nellie Summers in Des Moines. Two children named Herman and Maude. After the divorce the children went by the name Summers. Maude died as a teenager and Herman never had any children. Johnston married a second time to Ethel Jane Park (11-11-1883 to 1957) in Sheffield Illinois. Three children were Johnston (my dad,) Louis and Norman.
8. Louis Henry born 7-28-1873. Died in a railroading accident while in the process of divorce from a woman named Lottie. No children.
9. Lily May : born 11-13 1877. Married to Albert Norman from Canada. Lived most of her life in Des Moines. One daughter Helen died as a young adult from T B.
Either Hattie or Hannah was married to Andy Buffington.
